Did Gary Carter invent the F-Bomb?

Deadspin found a dictionary that thinks so.

Re: Grary Carter and the F Bomb

Of all the dorky terms gaining currency around the Mets' clubhouse at the time --- "gamer," "big fly" --- that's not the one I would have guessed that Carter coined.

I believe "F Bomb" showed up in Lenny Dykstra's masterwork, Nails, which preceded Carter's use by a year.

I hope you cross-check that indispensable resource and alert the etymological big brains.

Re: Grary Carter and the F Bomb

You'd think the source material would be in my baseball library, but I never did acquire Nails during its legendary first printing. I do, however, distinctly recall a review of 1986 books from when they flooded the market in early 1987, with it being noted that Lenny talked about how many "F-bomb"s he dropped versus how many Wally detonated. First time I ever saw the phrase.

Will report back when Nails hammers its way into my collection, as it inevitably will.
