NYM Rotation -- Now with Extra Hefner!

As first mentioned by 'Guys' during tonight's telecast, starting on Sunday in Washington the team will go with a six-man rotation with the exception of RA who gets his spot every five games. All others get at least an extra day of rest and on days when Dickey jumps in front of them and/or an off-day comes up they will get an extra day on top of that.

So for Santana & Young it gives them extra rest time for their surgically repaired arms, and for young'uns Harvey & Niese it keeps their innings totals down.

Harvey - Santana & Niese go on Thurs, Fri & Sat, then Hefner Sunday, but then it's Dickey's turn so Young becomes the first one affected.

I think it's a great idea for Santana, Young and Niese. And Dickey, cause I want to see him win as many as possible from here on out. The only reason I'd still like to see Harvey on 5 is a selfish one. I'd like him to get a lil jump on his way to a 300 win career.

Re: NYM Rotation -- Now with Extra Hefner!

i don't have a problem with a 6-man rotation under certain circumstances. But i'm not sure about THESE circumstances.

We don't have to artificially limit the innings of Dickey (a knuckleballer) or Niese (a 26-year old deep into his 3rd straight major league season), and Chris Young is a a broken down veteran on a cheap 1-year deal. Make him throw until he dies. So the issues are Harvey (a young rookie starter) and Santana (an injured veteran with big $ still owed). At this point, i'd just as soon DL Santana and see if he can't come back healthier next year, since he's really not helping this year, and there's no point to pushing him any further. Harvey? Yeah, he could skip a start here and there to keep his innings down. With his lack of control, its not like he's pitching more than 5.5 IP/GS anyway, but sure. skip a start. But a regular 6th SPer only makes sense to me here if you have a great prospect and you want to give him a taste of the majors before shutting him down for the year. Wheeler, Familia, some other prospect. Then maybe it's worth throwing off Dickey and Niese from their preparations, and limiting Harvey. But for Jeremy "AAAA-ball" Hefner? I'm not sure about that. maybe if we're showcasing him for a trade to some southern city where his homophobia can be used as a ticket promotion, then it makes sense. Is that it Sandy? Tell us. I can get behind that.

I wonder how many Santana starts will fall on home dates. The only reason I can see for not shutting him down is to sell a very small amount of extra tickets to fans looking to see the guy who threw the no-hitter.

I agree that it is foolish to pitch him any more this season as it jeopardizes anything he may be able to contribute next year.

Re: NYM Rotation -- Now with Extra Hefner!

Some thoughts on giving Niese extra rest.
He has done quite well this year, and in the 2nd half too. 13 straight starts of 6+ innings, often with an extra day of rest. Niese has been able to go a lot deeper into games this year, besides not struggling in the 2nd half so far. It would be interesting to see if he can maintain his stamina.
But, he is already approaching (if he hasn't already exceeded) his previous high for innings pitched. He has been signed to a long term cntract, so they might want to be protective of a valuable asset.

Re: NYM Rotation -- Now with Extra Hefner!

he's got maybe 8 or 9 starts left, and if he averages a little over 6IP/GS, he'll throw maybe 45-55 IP the rest of the season, which would put him in the 190-200 IP range for the year. For a guy like Niese, in his 3rd full major league season with 2 partial seasons before that, this should not be a burdensome workload or adequate reason to give a POS like Hefner any of his starts.

there may be other reasons for a 6th SPer, but i don't like this one. You can baby a young arm (like Harvey) to protect it early in his career, but Niese is past that point.
