It is about 9 pm. It's getting dark out but not too dark. You're at a hotel, watching TV with your spouse, the Olympics, perhaps, nothing you can't live without.

Suddenly the lights at the hotel go out. Not the nearby streetlights, gas stations, restaurants--just the hotel. There is still light coming in the windows. Not enough to read by, but still.

Which would you do?

I'd pull out by back-lit e-reader and get some reading done.

Re: Power shortage poll

depends. Am on vacation? Am I going to be there all week? Have I just arrived?

If it's my first day, I might consider convincing them to transfer my reservation to another hotel in the chain, if one exists and is nearby. But it might be more hassle than it's worth unless it's really hot and the AC is out.

But otherwise I probably just ride it out, whine a bit on facebook, go to the bar for a drink and then go to bed.

Interestingly, there's about 600,000 million Indians in the dark right now. That's half the country --- or, in local terms, the equivalent of perhaps the US, Canada, Mexico, all of Central America, all of the Carribbean... That still may not cut it.

Re: Power shortage poll

The population of all of North America plus Colombia equal the number of those without power in India.

Yikes!

Re: Power shortage poll

i think it probably depends on how much i feel that i will need the power during my trip. but most likely, i go to sleep thankful that i've not spent yet naother night on abusiness trip staying up way too late to watch something stupid on the telly.

Re: Power shortage poll

relatedly, I find it an interesting thing that when the power goes out everyone doesn't miss a beat on Facebook and Twitter and the like.

It adds fuel to the paranoid fantasy of mine that all of you people on the Internet are actually just sentient computer programs out there somewhere.

I'd go down to the lobby, but without a chip on my shoulder. Gather what information is available, collect on the free stuff they are giving to loyal patrons, hobnob with other guests. "Hey, candlelight Yahtzee anybody?"

When we are forced together in adversity, we can discover wonderful things (or if adversity rises to crisis, tear each other to pieces). A lot of unexpected romance flares up at the Blackout Inn, I'd bet.

That's a lot of people.

If the hotel doesn't have power in the circumstances above, they'll be giving me a full refund.

I spent the night in a hotel during a blackout as a result of hurricane Isabel in 2003. It was a very strange experience once the sun went down. It is amazing how black the dark really is.

You travel with Yahtzee? I always want to, but I never have the space for it.

I see this as a neat artsy little film. A one night voyeurlike look at the adventures in a hotel when the power goes out. Different glimpses into a bunch of different stories. Actually, that's probably been done. also good start for a horror movie.

Reminds me a little of the 50 stories from The Cosmopolitan, where you see glimpses of hotel guests via the LCD pillars in the lobby.

Okay, it was Sunday night in suburban Philadelphia. Muggy and warm but not unbearable b/c the A/C had been on all day. It was our last night of three. Holiday Inn Express; surely there are plenty of them in Phila area.

We stuck it out. Way too pooped to move, and really like I said to hubby "I can sleep in the dark".

Does that help your decision Ceeter? :)

Oh, and by the way, on our first night, we had a free upgrade to a two bedroom, two bathroom, full kitchen suite, for just the two of us.

it just makes me worried. I'm staying in a suburban Philadelphia hotel on Saturday. DoubleTree though. And close to Maple Shade's Iron ..Iron Hill Brewery so I'd just go get a beer in that case. Might do that anyway.

But yeah, I'd just suck it up in that case. Last night, depending on what I was up to, I might've just said "fuck it, I'm driving home."
