Apple picking

Does anyone know when to pick apples? Just a general idea...now? September? October?

My darling little tree has just four apples and I don't want to miss out on them. I don't think they are ready yet, but I really don't know when they are supposed to be.

Some country girl I am.

Re: Apple picking

In this area, late September/ early October.
But you are more South that we are.
Best way to know? Ask your local grocer when the local apples will be in his store.
If that fails, ask your local Girl Scout Leader. They sometimes have their scouts pick apples as a Fall fun thing activity.

That's a good idea!
I've been kind of watching the produce stand down the road, too. Someone told me to watch the Amish farms, but I don't go by them anymore

Eating one of them right now...it had a pretty big bad spot. It's delicious! I don't remember what kind but it tastes like a MacIntosh, my favorite...

My son got me this tree (and a peach tree which had dozens of blossoms but got snowed on) for my birthday last year, so it is beloved...

Based on my experience with the peach tree in my backyard, I say eat them before the squirrels do.

Enjoy :)

My mother noted to me this weekend than having the random stray kittens in the backyard has really cut back on the birds eating her figs.

Fresh apples are yummy.

Re: Apple picking

The squirrels ate my cherry tomatoes this year, every one of them. Except the ones they picked and then threw on the ground after taking just a bite ARGH!

I put out some stuff called OLD DOC"S SQUIRREL CHASER for the second crop. It's in little bags and it stinks.

Re: Apple picking

Bought freshly picked Gala apples from the local "farmers and growers market" yesterday. They could not have been any crisper or juicier.
