OOTS 8/27/12

Felix Hernandez pitches his third 1-0 shutout win of August.

I'm still mad at him for hitting that grand slam off Johan...but he's a hell of a pitcher otherwise.

Re: OOTS 8/27/12

Toronto, 2 runs down and a strike away from losing to the Yanx, gets a 3B HR from Colby Rasmus off of Soriano. He subsequently got booed off the mound for what it his 3rd blown save of the year (like Mariano would have fewer).
Jeter countered with a leadoff HR in the bottom of the 9th to tie it, but the Yanx go hitless after that and the Jays win it in the 11th courtesy of an errant Derek Lowe pick-off throw.

Rays lose but Orioles win (snapping the long ChiSox winning streak) so it's now Baltimore in 2nd 3.5 back and Tampa at 4.0

And Mark Texiera is scratch from the [crossout]Belmont[/crossout]err..next 5 games or so.

after two more with the Blue Jays they have 3-3-4 with the Orioles, Rays, Orioles.

Whether or not they coast or panic will be decided shortly.

Re: OOTS 8/27/12

I was thinking about Yanqui fans booing Soriano as he walked off the mound last night, many of them no doubt thinking, 'This wouldn't have happened if Mariano hadn't a gotten hurt!'
So I thought a bit of comparison was in order.

Soriano, since he took over the closer's role in early May (and including last night's debacle) compared to Mariano 2011 version
The innings are off because we're comparing a partial season to a full one so I'm going with rate stats rather than raw numbers

IPH/9BB/9K/9ERAWHiPSvs/Blown
Soriano40.27.32.09.11.991.0333/3
Maiano61.16.91.28.81.910.9044/5

Of course we already know - from the bleacher bums to the fat man doing mid-days - what the counter-argument is going to be; 'Yeah but Mariano won't blow the ones that count like in the post-season and stuff' - to which there's no real reply (not one that'll satisfy them anyway) since it requires proving or disproving future negatives. But what this does show is that removing even 'the best closer of all time' hasn't really affected the team at all, and maybe that says as much about closers in general than about these specific ones or about the expectations of spoiled fans in particular.

Compare this to how they've struggled since losing A-Rod, even though he wasn't having a good year.

Soriano, and David Robertson, were good relievers already though. Imagine the praise they'd be heaping on the old guy if they'd had to replace him with Frank Francisco or something.

They're 16-15 since ARod went out, although the only really good month they've had all year was their 20-7 June. The other months have been at or just above .500 with or without the Centaur wannabe.

Plus this may have something to do with them not really missing him
ARod for the season (400 PA) - .276/.358/.449
Chavez for season (250 PA) - .295/.353/.511
Chavez since the ARod injury - .352/.410/.592

Josh Harrison of the Pirates, trying to score from second on a single to right, hits Yadier Molina so hard that you could see the cartoon birdies. Molina holds on, but apparently blood is boiling in both dugouts. Unfortunately, MLB Network is showing ChiSox/O's.

True. But they're playing Chavez in a platoon mostly right? They've seemingly done a good job at maximizing that stuff, but with Texiera out they're in an iffy spot.

their June should've been what our June was.

Actually, if you look at their pitching splits by month, they're woefully average to bad, except June. Specifically the starters.

Blame Beltran. (for a great throw)

While it was a strong throw, Molina had to short-hop it, causing his head to be down as Harrison steamed toward the plate. A throw that hit 15-20 feet in front of the plate might have given him more of a chance to protect himself.

Re: OOTS 8/27/12

Apparently no concussion for Molina so he's (say it with me folks) day to day.

Also injured last night was Matt Kemp who ran full speed into the CF wall in the 1st inning. Stayed in the game actually until he dove for another ball (didn't catch either one) and then called it a night. Also said to be day to day. Dodgers have lost 3 of 4 since 'The Trade'

Tuesday was not a good night for aces either:
- Verlander: 8 earned on 12 hits over 5.2 IPs vs KC. Tigers remain 2 back of the ChiSox
- Strasburg: 7 runs (5 earned) on 9 hits over 5 innings in a 9-0 loss in Miami. That's five straight losses for the Nats in which they've scored a Met-like total of 6 runs. Maybe their offense is coming back to earth after a mid-season jump.
- Chris Sale: 4 earned in just 4 innings in what became a 6-0 stomping in Baltimore. The O's are 14 games over .500 (71-57) despite a stunning negative-39 RS/RA differential. Pythag sez they should be 60-68

Yankees drop another series. Bullpen makes a 1 run deficit a 3 run one. they Go quietly 1-2-3 10pitches in the 9th.
