sure. It's baseball, it sorta counts more than Spring Training. Stadium was more into the WBC game I went to in 2009 than any Met game that season.

It's a charade, a huge waste of time and effort, and the qualification process is entirely fraudulent. Anybody who eats at Olive Garden during 2012 qualifies to play for Italy. Blow it up.

Not as bad as Clay Bellingeropoulos playing for Greece in the 2004 Olympics, on the basis of one Greek Great-Grandparent.

It's far from perfect wrt scheduling, player participation, etc., and I knida wish it weren't under MLB's direction, but all that said I think it's important for the longterm global health of the game. And it does beat spring training.

This is where I'm at too.
It's not perfect and will never be perfect (not even sure what perfect could be) but the suggestions to "fix" it that have it being played in November, or in mid-winter, or whenever, are going to have just as many drawbacks as holding it in March.
I also think that the comments from those (like say Keith) who seem almost violently against it are hyper-boling and hyper-ventilating at the same time. Even the teams who stay in it the longest are playing, what?, like six to eight games max, and are doing so during a time in which they'd be playing games anyway - even if somewhat more relaxed ones.

So while announcer Keith is, I'm sure, fondly remembering his days of ST as a relaxed time filled with half-days of work followed by beach or golf and wouldn't want to give that up, I've a feeling that if player Keith were given the option to participate and, let's not let this fact slide, get extra paid for it, he wouldn't be so quick to trash the concept.

Re: 2013 World Baseball Classic

Josh Satin and his hirstute eyebrows has gotten all of one trip to the plate for the Metties in 2012, but the virtue of his briss and his bar mitzvah qualify him for Israeli citizenship or to join the Israeli national baseball squad.
Jeff Kaplan was born in Dana Point, California. But the blood of Samson flows in his veins as demostrated by his 5-0, 3.50 season in relief for St. Lucie and Binghamton. And the spirit of Judas Maccabee animates him as he, too, takes the field for Israel.
Kai Gronauer has a less eliptical birthright for competition. He may have gotten as far as his talent will take him in affiliated ball, putting up Nickeasean numbers between high A and AA, but that won't stop the Solingen, Germany native from lacing 'em up for German glory.
Injuries and limited effectiveness kept outfielder Adam Loewen from earning a callup to Flushing this season, but the Vancouverian will be making an interesting return to Team Canada, having thrown 3 2/3 scoreless against the US back in 2006 before his left arm started betraying him.
Hamilton Bennett may hail from Tega Cay, South Carolina, but just sounds like a Pride & Prejudice character. His 7-2, 2.55 season in the St. Lucie bullpen may merely be Florida State League numbers, but those and his priggish name are good enough to get him an invite to take the mound for the UK.
Five years removed from his last big league appearance, being one of the most productive Jewish players in history still gets Shawn Green an invite to be the senior member of Team Israel.
Emmanuel Garcia climbed the ladder of the Mets system, switching from infield to outfield, but still hitting like an infielder. That ended his career in Buffalo in 2010, but the Quebec native rejoins his Canadian teammates, with whom he battled for supremacy in Beijing, back before the Olympic committee tossed baseball on the historical scrapheap.
Injuries and the bottleneck behind David Wright slowed defensive specialist third baseman Shawn Bowman as he climbed through the Mets' system. After getting passed by Zach Lutz the Mets left him exposed on waivers following the 2010 season, from which he was claimed by Toronto, a Canadian homecoming for the British Columbian. He suited up for Canada in the 2009 classic but saw no action.
Minor league homerun champ Mike Cevernak played with Buffalo in 2010, where he went head-to-head with wallbanging rivals Mike Hessman, Val Pascucci, and Mike Jacobs. His 192 minor league homers and his last name earn him an invite to help the Czech Republic in their qualifying effort, despite his Michigan birthrite. Being 36 with a mere 13 big league plate appearances on his record, how could he say no?

Saw a story last week (may have been the ESPN site) that when Brad Asmus returns from the WBC, he could be offered the Astros' managerial spot.

Found it:
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Astros have interview(ed) former catcher Brad Ausmus for their managerial vacancy.
Ausmus, 43, retired after the 2010 season and previously said that he didn't plan on returning to the game anytime soon, but he's obviously considering it. The three-time Gold Glover and one-time All-Star has no managerial experience at any level, but that isn't a deal breaker anymore with Robin Ventura and Mike Matheny getting jobs last winter.Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Astros have interview former catcher Brad Ausmus for their managerial vacancy.

Ausmus is currently managing the Israeli team in the WBC.

If the goal of the WBC is to open up new markets, it sounds like a real success story. Great to have qualifying battles pop up at different times of the year instead of the invitational format the tournament originally had.

Russell Martin, callow POS? That sounds about right.

For all we know, he spent weeks agonizing over this decision, weighing the pros and cons of giving up his knees for his country, and now he lies awake in the wee hours wondering if he made the right choice. Or maybe not.

''It wasn't that hard of a decision,'' Martin said. ''There's the feeling of I might be letting my teammates down, my Canadian teammates, but that's something that I'm sure I'll get over.''

Sad week for Australia in ball & bat sports.

The plight of the Aussie team is a pretty freaking hilarious in light of an article that appeared in an Oz sports mag two weeks ago incredulously entitled “When did Australia get so good in baseball?” The article’s central thesis revolves around the Aussies shelling Oliver Perez at the 2009 WBC (lets be honest, Lorcan's Little League team would have shelled Ollie P in '09).

Said article then goes from the ridiculous to the insane by suggesting Australia would dominate a hypothetical cricket/baseball hybrid (as the Oz cricket team is currently getting their assess handed to them in India).

It's a shame really because the Australian baseball team isn't infested with douchebags, which is something of a rarity in our national sporting teams. The problem is that the ABL is such a bush league, you would be forgiven for confusing it with a '70's porn actress.

Re: 2013 World Baseball Classic

anyone see the brawl in the Mexico vs Canada game?

Apparently, Mexico threw at a Canadian batter...the ump issued a warning, and then the Mexican pitcher drilled the batter in the back...also, a fan drilled the Canadian pitching coach with a bottle...I included the youtube video of the brawl, but the actual link shows what led up to the brawl...

It wasn’t quite an international incident, but a benches-clearing brawl broke out between Mexico and Canada during Saturday’s World Baseball Classic.

In a chippy game that had previously involved a late takeout slide and a collision at home plate, Canadian Chris Robinson bunted to lead off the ninth inning with Canada holding a 9-3 lead.

Mexico pitcher Arnold Leon responded by throwing at Rene Tosoni and missing as both teams were warned by the umpire. Then, Leon hit Tosoni on the next pitch and the benches emptied.

Red Sox pitcher Alfredo Aceves was heavily involved in the fray, seen wrestling with Tyson Gillies and appearing to suffer a blow to the head. The right-hander was ejected from the game and could face further discipline. Aceves’ Red Sox teammates were reported to have cheered at the sight of their pitcher fighting.

The brawl also spilled into the stands, and Canada pitching coach Denis Boucher was struck in the face with a bottle of some sort thrown from the crowd. Check out a fan’s view of the mayhem in the video below.

Mexico Manager Rick Renteria Blames Misunderstanding of Rules for Bench-Clearing Brawl at World Baseball Classic by Dan Duquette Jr.

With one team bunting in the ninth inning of a game it led by six runs, it might ordinarily be understandable for their opponent to get steamed. However, due to tiebreaker rules in the World Baseball Classic that hinge on run differential, it appears that Team Canada meant no offense by bunting against Team Mexico — although offense was clearly taken.

Mexico manager Rick Renteria blamed a misunderstanding of those tiebreaker rules for his players’ actions on Saturday, pointing out that in the “heat of the moment,” they didn’t realize what Canada was trying to do.

After a bunt by Chris Robinson to lead off the ninth inning for Canada, Mexico third baseman Luis Cruz was seen motioning at his pitcher to hit the next batter. That’s exactly what Arnold Leon did, plunking Rene Tosoni on his third try and sparking the brawl. Seven players were ejected after the fight, including Red Sox pitcher Alfredo Aceves. Canadian pitching coach Denis Boucher also was hit in the face by a projectile thrown from the stands.

Re: 2013 World Baseball Classic

Yeah, the run-differential-based tiebreakers have led to a lot of nonsense. During one of the qualifying games, a team scored a run to go ahead with two out in the eighth, and then realized they put themselves at a disadvantage, because they needed to win by six or something to advance, so they needed the bottom of the ninth.

Although Derek Jeter never eviscerated international pitching in a tournament setting like David Wright is doing through the current World Baseball Classic, Jeter is Wright's implied role model for his sizzling WBC star turn. With America only now coming to grips with Jeter's absence from Team USA, the nation can at least breathe easy that Wright plays in the same city as Jeter and has probably met him on several occasions. Wright and the Mets should thank their lucky stars for Interleague play and the chance to mix and mingle with what's left of the Core Four.

Just being in the presence of Derek Jeter makes a good guy a better man -- and, perhaps, a more dangerous hitter. But of course everybody in every country has a long way to go before living up to the sterling reputation of the original Captain, a role once personified by Lou Gehrig yet perfected by Derek Jeter, whose persona this WBC sorely misses. Wright, alas, will have to do for a nation craving its Jeter fix.

See? He's not negative all of the time.

Captain America is a Met

By Howard Megdal
10:30 am Mar. 13, 2013

It has been a difficult spring for the New York Mets.

Their announced Opening Day pitcher, Johan Santana, has suffered setbacks in his preparation for the season, is widely expected to begin the year on the disabled list, and is reportedly livid with team officials who pulled the patented Mets move of blaming the injured player. The club's decision to open up an Amway storefront at Citi Field, which seemed so much like parody of their own Madoff-stricken track record that I hesitated to write about it till I'd seen evidence of its existence with my own eyes, was roundly mocked.

But while the Mets scramble in Port St. Lucie to cobble together a starting outfield, one of the team's few positives is elsewhere, reminding everyone that there is a world-class player who will be playing home games in Queens this year.

David Wright is not just a member of the United States World Baseball Classic team; he has been their best player by far, and the reason the U.S. is still even in the tournament.

It isn't simply that Wright has managed the critical hits to advance the U.S. cause, although he has. Opposing pitchers simply cannot get him out.

The U.S. lost its opener to Mexico last Friday, 5-2. This wasn't due to Wright, who had two singles in four at-bats, one of them driving in a run. His teammates didn't follow suit, however, and the U.S. faced a game against Italy that could have all but eliminated them.

The game was knotted, 2-2, in the bottom of the fifth inning, with the bases loaded and two outs. Wright stepped to the plate and launched a grand slam just three innings after he'd sent Italy's right fielder to the fence on what turned into a rare out he's made in the tournament. This time, Wright pulled an outside pitch into the left-center field stands. He even added a single in the ninth, but was stranded.

Appropriately, Canada was determined not to let Wright beat them. Instead, Wright walked three times and doubled, reaching base more times than anyone else in a 9-4 U.S. win. Lest you think Canadian pitchers were wild, no one else on the U.S. team walked once.

By Tuesday night's second round game against Puerto Rico, announcer Matt Vasgersian had taken to calling Wright "Captain America." No one had ever called him that before, as far as I know, but the name seemed apt. Wright may just be the face of U.S. baseball, and is clearly up to the task.

Facing the same Puerto Rico team he'd beaten in 2009 with a walkoff hit, Wright had five R.B.I., one on a groundout in the second, another on a single in the fifth, and then his bases-clearing double to right-center field broke open the game in the eighth.

Wright, who is almost comically team-first in his words and deeds, described his domination this way: "The individual stuff is nice. But ultimately, it's about winning that first WBC championship for the United States."

What Wright is doing here is putting to rest the ludicrous notion that at best, he's some kind of complementary player and not a star. He's already put up numbers that have him on track to equal or surpass all but the very best to every play his position, third base, in major league history. His lack of a championship has nothing to do with him, and everything to do with the team around him.

A man who was expected to join Wright on an eventual champion with the Mets, Jose Reyes, is having a fine W.B.C. of his own. Reyes will face Wright Thursday night, when the Dominican Republic takes on the United States.

For Mets fans, who aren't likely to see their team come anywhere close to a championship this year, the meeting will be bittersweet. But there is one thing to celebrate in unmitigated fashion: one of the best players to ever wear the Mets' uniform was retained for the long haul this past winter, and whatever else happens to the New York Mets, they're employing the justifiable face of American baseball to play every day.

This is the first WBC that I remember actively paying attention to, enjoying, or looking forward to the games. The US squad and some of these Latin American teams are filled with respectable mixes of starts and still-active big leaguers. It's nice to watch a March game where the fans and players actually care who wins, also.

It helps that Capt. USA is out there knocking balls around (no offense, Jordy).

I enjoyed last time, for much the same reasons.(and because I went to one. Always better in person right?) the Twitter chatter helps I think, as does the Captain America bit. How 'bout saving two or three of those hits for the regular season, huh? Like maybe when you're in Queens.

Verducci and whoever (Vasgersian?) are trying too hard to sell this series. Yes this IS different from a normal March game ... NO, it isn't the Super Bowl, Masters, Rose Bowl and Stanley Cup rolled into one.

I've seen like six innings of this tourney so far tops but it's been enough to see Torre bunting at least three times too many. Doesn't help that the announcers (Kaat and someone in one of the earlier games) keep praising him for it. At one point they were saying how well the U.S. had been employing 'small ball' in that particular game; except that they were scoreless at the time. It's like they think as long as the Sac Bunt gets the runner over then it proves the strategy successful. No guys, it doesn't.

Wright to return to PSL tomorrow to get checked out. Might be a tight squeeze to get from Miami to PSL and back to Miami in time for tomorrow night's game even if he does get the clean bill of health.

If it were a Mets pitcher, and they were saying crap like that, you know that a either back to back to back doubles were about to happen; or the guy would give up a Grand Slam within 5 minutes...it's about time that a compliment backfired on a Brave or a Phillie, even if it was in a game that don't count for a hill of beans...

Didn't he also say that he's been playing all along with this stiffness? It kind of sounds like something I had with my back a few years ago. It would be stiff and achy if I was inactive; I'd feel it if I had been sitting too long and I'd have trouble standing upright after getting out of a chair. But as I'd move around I would feel perfectly fine and I wouldn't even remember that I was injured. It eventually resolved itself. I think it took a couple of weeks.

Hopefully this is something similar, and rest or applied heat or something will make it go away.

Not at all, I have always liked him.......4-3 now as Cabrera walks in a run.......

This is thrilling

Down to three outs, down by one.

Walk, great at bat by Mauer....bases loaded for Stanton.

Reynolds by the way is great in the booth.

I agree, he reminds me of Mex, he's analyzing each pitch the way another major league hitter would.

I like Reynolds, too... as a guy, and a guy explaining the mechanics of defense/hitting. When he's evaluating players and their abilities-- then he's woefully, willfully ill-informed.

Stanton's at-bat was a disappointment. Looked off-balance... like he was being dictated to, rather than having an actual plate approach. A guy like Braun or Wright-- or, frankly, Jeter-- spoils pitches there until he gets one he can do something with.

Hell of a catch by Rollins on the bloop in the ninth, BTW.

Heck of a pitch to Stanton in that count right there though.

Great fun, great baseball.

Tomorrow or the next day, can we discuss why Puerto Rico has
it's own team?

Dying

And really, is this such a huge upset like they are trying to paint it?, some good players over there.

Mitch Williams saying it's no coincidence that the USA are out since Wright went down.

Mitch Williams says a lot of things.

That said, Wright would have likely been up with the bases loaded there instead of Stanton.

Not only would Wright have been up, but he would've been up against the pitcher he hit the walk-off hit against in the 2009 classic.

Maybe that's what rubs me the wrong way about him. I'm not as invested in the hitting/specifics of a player since it's not really my team so I wasn't paying as much attention to that. Just half-paying attention and hearing him say zany things.

Way better than Verducci yesterday though, so much appreciated.

Maybe the team from Vlissingen, New Netherland should tap into this heretofore undervalued Dutch baseball talent.

Wish they had shown these games on MLB.tv so I could've watched them. I would've even been willing to pay a little extra.
