Collin, Hey: You're Going Down Under (MLB, that is)

Collin McHugh's historic major league debut earns him immediate demotion to Buffalo to make room for Jeremy Hefner and his bag of "It's a Girl!" Chick-fil-A sammies.

What was that conversation like?

"Kid, we're sending you down so you can learn to give up just one hit and strike out ten."

I suspect they said, "We'll see you again after September 1."

Way to reward excellence Mets! Reinstate a mediocrity like Hefner and send down someone that did well. If the argument is that it's only for a week, then that's true for Hefner.

Re: Collin, Hey: You're Going Down Under (MLB, that is)

Yeah, but. You're not going to use McHugh until the 29th at the Phillies anyway, whereas if Niese gets lit up like a Christmas tree tonight, you stick Hefner in there.

Plus, WHO GIVES A CRAP THIS TEAM SUCKS.

Well, there goes the rationale for this board.

I wonder if maybe there's some protection for paternity leave players that they're not sent down directly after using their collectively bargained right. Hefner, long relief utility notwithstanding, has been adequate, mostly. McHugh excelled. Even if it is a ten-day demotion (will have to be after Sept. 1), it's a weird message.

Fuck - I'm going to be at Tuesday's game in Philly, and would definitely have preferred to see McHugh than Hefner.

I'm going to have to get as drunk as a Phillies Phan to tolerate this one....

OE - It looks like I'll be seeing "Mr. 5 Innings" instead of Hefner.

Nah, of course we give a crap.

Was it an options thing, maybe?

Yes, but the next rotation opening is for Sunday and McHugh would have a bit of trouble filling that one, no?
And it's not like Gee, Pelfrey, or Santana are available either.

Re: Collin, Hey: You're Going Down Under (MLB, that is)

How about saying "if someone does well, they stay"? Days off, days on, I don't give a fuck. Finally someone does well and he gets demoted but Jeremy Fucking Hefner is back on the team.

Fine, so we should pitch him Sunday on two days rest as a reward.

Re: Collin, Hey: You're Going Down Under (MLB, that is)

Keep him and find someone else. They must have someone else as vapid as Hefner on the 40-man.

Re: Collin, Hey: You're Going Down Under (MLB, that is)

Well, they had to reactivate Hefner because the paternity leave thing has a quick expiration time (3 days I believe) and he was already scheduled to go on Sunday, a spot where McHugh certainly can not.

Now I suppose they could have taken the path where they activate and then immediately send down Hefner while bringing up some other guy to start on Sunday --although that could trigger some 40-man decisions that might backfire down the road.
And, really what's the whole point in that ... so that McHugh (a guy most NYM fans had barely heard of prior to yesterday) doesn't have to pitch once in Buffalo before he can be recalled and join the rotation in September?

And plus there's the whole Monday off-day thing so it would have been about 7 or 8 days between starts for McHugh if they had kept him up.
In all, I think they did him a favor by sending him down for a week (assuming he's back as soon as conditions permit).

Re: Collin, Hey: You're Going Down Under (MLB, that is)

John Sickels looks at McHugh's draft and minor league history and quite possibly the over-looking of his progress from some quarters

New York Mets pitching prospect Collin McHugh made his major league debut last week, throwing seven shutout innings against the Colorado Rockies, allowing just two hits and a walk, while fanning nine. This comes on the heels of a strong season in Double-A and Triple-A.. Little-known pre-season to anyone but fanatic Mets fans, McHugh was completely left of the Baseball America Top 30 Mets prospect list for example, not even making their honorable mention category.
I was more optimistic about McHugh and had him ranked 16th on my pre-season Mets list, but even as an optimist, I didn't expect the season he put together. Let's take a look.

I'm just glad Dan Warthen hasn't had too many men at work in the Mets' bullpen lately.

Colin Hay was part of Ringo's All-Star Band that we saw several years ago at Westbury. Hay, Sheila E, Paul Carrack (Squeeze/Mike & The Mechanics), John Waite. Great show.

Not a sentiment you want to hear from potential FA signings.

How most folks (at least of a certain age) came to know him (although the 'Pop-up' comments were added years later)

They were one of the first bands that became known (at least in this country) entirely via the then newly created MTV

Called up for a one-start tryout
Made it to the airport in time to fly out
Pitched against Houston, made them look futile
But the pen took over and our pen is bru-tile
And the skip said,
"McHugh, we’ll send you back down unda
Where the bats can hit and the gloves don’t blunda
You've some lightning heat; you got a curve like thunda
If you don’t come back, you’re gonna be a one game wonda."
[/list:u]

Checking in back in Buf’lo
Up come Zack Lutz, Oswaldo Navarro
They asked, "Is Sandy a man which
Rewards a shutout with a demotion sandwich?"
And I said, "No!
Said they just had to send me back down unda
Said they needed Schwinie for a start on Sunda
My career ain't been torn asunda
Though come September I might start to wonda."
[/list:u]

Next start in Triple-A
Five frames and gone, just a short day
I said to Wally, "Are you trying to screw me?
Because our pen gives no confidence to me?"
And he said, "FUCK!
Welcome back to the team down unda!
Where we FUCKing suck too much to wear a Mets numba!
FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! We’ve been sucky all summa!
And if you don’t like it, you can give me a humma!"

Yeah!
Pitchin' for a team down unda
Where the women flirt if they think you’re a comer
You get booed by an underpaid plumba
Please call me back at the end of the summa!
