My Unisphere Photo

Two pieces of news about this photo -

1) I was on vacation for the judging, but my friend informs me that it won third prize at the Middlesex County Fair; and

2) It was accepted into the Juried Photography Exhibition at the Monmouth Museum and will be on exhibit there September 14th through October 28th. I'll post more about the exhibit once the information is up on the Monmouth website.

I'm in a state of thrilled disbelief :)

Thanks 3D :)

And yes, the photo blows up well. It's basically an out of the camera shot, taken with my D7000 and 10-24 lens, so it has enough pixels to handle enlargements. The one that will be on display at Monmouth is 24x36".

No, I meant I literally blew it up as in "kaboom" in Grand Theft Auto IV (the video game).

Am I to understand from that perspective that unisphere doesn't include Antarctica, or are you freezing somewhere just off the coast?

Re: My Unisphere Photo

Remember how my Unisphere picture won third place at the Middlesex County Fair?

Well, funny story about that....

My friends live near the site of the fair, and we asked them to drop off the picture for us. We also didn't get to the fair itself or the awards ceremony because of conflicts and our vacation. But when we returned from vacation, our friends let us know that I won third place.

Yesterday we got together with our friends, and they gave me the picture. When I saw the ribbon, I asked how it hung at the competition, and they told me that they thought it hung this way. Which amuses me - I never considered that anyone would hang this wide picture from that orientation.

Maybe that's why it only won third place instead of first ;)

I find this an amusing lesson learned. And when I drop off my larger submission to the Monmouth Museum's Juried Photography Exhibition, I'll make extra sure that they know how to properly hang the photo :)

The nature of the subject actually works from pretty much any angle. I'm just emotionally committed to the orientation that I had when I shot it.

And thanks guys :)

Re: My Unisphere Photo

its a great piece of work, and worthy of its recognition. you should be proud of it.

And your quite right; the way your picture is hung (not just its orientation, but the background, height, lighting, etc) is all integral to the way the work is perceived by the public and you should demand and exercise as much control over those aspects as you did of the films speed and aperture size (or their relevant corellaries with digital photography), to the extent possible. It doesn't matter if someone else likes it better one way or another, or sees no difference. Its an expression of YOUR vision, and that should be the only controlling criteria.

Good luck with the exhibition!

Re: My Unisphere Photo

Thanks Vic :)

And yes, shutter speed and aperture are a part of digital photography, as well as ISO choice (in the old days you'd be constrained by the film that you were using, but today you can change the ISO from shot to shot if you wish).

If I had been at the county fair, I would have had them re-hang the photo. It was my bad for entrusting it to others so completely; lesson learned. The larger copy that will be in the museum will be hung by a wire that D-Dad installed, so orientation won't be an issue with it (the lighting, etc. will still be out of my control).

Re: My Unisphere Photo

i think the orientation makes it a very different picture.

in the fair's orientation, the mind (well, mine) focuses in on the more familiar shape of the north american continent, drawing down into the lower half of hte frame. all that is above is lost. it looks as though you're looking through a globe.

in your orientation, it really feels like you're looking up into something massive. the shapes are familiar, but as they are oriented differently from what we are used to, we explore the frame. the sphere feels closer, more open. more epic.

I agree, when you turn it the center shifts and you don't quite get engulfed in the picture the same way. The way you took it, it has a 'stare up into infinity' feel to it that's lost.

I don't think it helps that it's swimming in that frame either.

Re: My Unisphere Photo

The frame was a whole different matter. Not only did it need to be smaller than ideal for the picture, but the county fair insisted on a plastic frame, which was a bitch to find.

For the exhibition at the Monmouth Museum, it will be on display in a proper 24x36" frame.

The picture definitely displays better large.

Atta girl!

By the way, here is a good online frame place....metal and wood only :)
I buy a lot of mine there

The metal frames are incredibly easy to put together; the wooden ones take a little more time and effort. All of them are gorgeous though

Re: My Unisphere Photo

Thanks cooby :)

With time I could have found a better frame for the county fair. But we were getting ready for vacation and otherwise in a rush, so I just bought the first thing that I found that met the fair's qualifications.

I actually kind of like that this happened, only because it drives home the point that I have to be diligent about how my work is displayed. The county fair (which wasn't even my county) was a good place to learn this lesson.

When I arrived at yesterday's opening of the Focus on Sculpture exhibit, wearing my little admission button, I was asked whether I had a piece on display. When I said I did, I was told to pick up my name tag.

I didn't receive any awards at the event, but I was honored to be a part of it. There were over 100 pieces submitted, and only 23 were accepted into the show. Someone we knew who also had a piece on exhibit said that he had been trying for years to get a picture exhibited there.

I keep kidding that I'm like Carly Rae Jepsen - I have this one piece that's really good, and I'm going to ride it as long as I can Obviously I'm not going to stop taking pictures, and I hope one day to take another one as special as this one. But even if I never do, I'm thrilled and honored to have taken a shot that turned out to be good enough to make it into competitive exhibitions. It has been an amazing experience.
