Winning streak poll? You should start a poll on how far behind the Marlins the Mets'll end up at season's end.

Sudden thought: When Edgin struck-out Wigginton last night we were one out away from a win ... and since that point, 13 of the next 15 Phillies to come to bat reached base.

Only the guy after Howard's blast (Brown I think) and the pitcher tonight (GiDP) failed to reach in that 15 batter span.

Two things occured to me tonight. The Mets will not win 70 games this season. David Wright will set the all time record for hits as a Met with maybe 100 people in attendance.

Assault isn't courage. It's cowardice. The problem certainly isn't an unwillingness to throw at people.

I believe there were, in fact, two hit batsmen for Philadelphia.

Yeah, the problem is if Philly scored twice and not 16 times, we still get humiliated.

That said, Hef-Fil-A can join Operation Shutdown as far as I'm concerned. Sad that Muffy, who appears to be the last guy playing his ass off for this team, hit into all them DPs.

Phillies 16, Mets 1
Reeling Mets Strike Bottom
By ANDREW KEH
Published: September 20, 2012

Excerpt:

After a summer full of degradation and defeat, the Mets on Thursday burrowed to a previously unfathomed nadir. On no other night this year was their humiliation as complete.

The Mets collapsed, 16-1, against the Philadelphia Phillies, extending their home losing streak to nine games. The game, a makeup contest for one postponed by rain, was viewed by a crowd of, at most, a couple thousand people, and played in the closest thing to silence attainable at an American professional sporting event. Imbuing one final insult to the night, the loss mathematically eliminated the Mets from playoff contention.

I appreciate the whole Polo Grounds deep green seats, but it may be a good time to think about painting them happy orange and other playground colors again like at Shea. I mean, we're seeing a lot of the seats these days.

Actually, I'm wondering if the outfield walls may turn out to be a good precedent. We lobby passionately for one retro-fit, Shea-referencing architectural feature each season, and in 40 years or so, they might more or less be playing in Shea again.

Of course, if there's only 90 fans left to lobby...

They could follow of the lead of the Kentucky Speedway and paint the seats so that they sort of look like people are sitting in them.

It seems a Wilponian thing to do.

Re: Hefty Met IGT 9/20

Today in Megdal:

Excerpt:

For his part, Collins did nothing to take incoming fire for his players. When asked if they have quit, Collins responded in his postgame press conference, "You'll have to ask them. I have my own opinion. And I'm not going to express it publicly."

It's a line of thinking that makes a simple problem needlessly complex. The Mets don't have the personnel to contend. To suggest some kind of malfeasance on the part of the players, who are playing for jobs next season, avoids blaming the sheer lack of talent on the Mets organization.

Meanwhile, the Mets have two weeks left in their season to show David Wright the kind of progress that will convince him to sign a contract extension with the team, assuming they even have the means to offer him one. The Mets hold a team option on Wright for 2013, but Wright has said he won't negotiate in-season next year, so the Mets can either find a way to extend him this winter, or risk losing him for nothing, like Jose Reyes, next winter.

That 4-24 record in the team's last 29 home games probably doesn't help the cause.

... it was an invective inducing game.

I’m not feeling remotely so generous of spirit. [The Mets] can cry, they can smash stuff, they can bite each other’s heads off for all I care…and maybe they can fucking run to first base.... ¶Who the fuck loses 16-1 in September? The same outfit that lost 13-0 in August, 11-5 in July, 9-1 in June, 8-0 in May and 18-9 in April....
