NLDS IST - Cincinnati v SF

Cueto [19-9; 2.78] vs Cain [16-5; 2.79] get the starts for game 1 in the city by the bay.

We can call this the George Foster series if even Cincy does have a slight edge in GF HRs: 244 to 4
SF drafted George in the 3rd round of the supplemental (January) draft in 1968, then dealt him 3-1/2 years and 129 ML ABs later to Cincy in exchange for Frank Duffy and Vern Geishert

Wow, Cueto coming out with an injury after retiring just one batter (erstwhile Met Angel Pagan).

At one point Pagan called time and Cueto stopped his pitch, mid-delivery. Ron Darling and two white guys I never heard of currently on TBS deliberating on the possibility that this caused some injury.

Re: NLDS IST - Cincinnati v SF

Back spasms, as per Verducci, doing voice-only in-game reportage (which I kinda like).

You know, the sort of pains you might get from whipping around super-quick to see a fastball that Brandon Phillips just whacked over your head and out of the park, only without hurting your neck. Y'know, like Matt Cain might do just now.

2-0, Redlegs.

Re: NLDS IST - Cincinnati v SF

Wait, there's that shiny, thick, sentient Verducci hair.

Apparently, Cueto's spasms aren't much of a thing; Baker's told our man SI Tom that he may be able to pitch in Game 3 or 4.

Meanwhile, the Reds are coping pretty damn well tonight; bearded junkballer Sam LeCure held the fort nicely for a scoreless 1 2/3, and Latos is on now as the closer-starter, cruising so far in the third.

Latos is through the third. He's also a lot more blond than I remembered him, and-- I think-- wouldn't look out of place in a Cobra Kai gi.

Re: NLDS IST - Cincinnati v SF

I listened to the final 1.5 innings of this game on my run via radio and although I hate being the guy who rags on announcers, Berman and Sutcliffe absolutely suck cock. Berman couldn't tell me what the heck happened on the wild pitch or the game-winning hit, and Sutcliffe's a dumb jock who thinks he's still a player. He defends every stupid decision made because "he's a player!" or "'Boch' is an an ex-catcher, you know he knows his way around the bullpen!" and only dares to question the plays once they don't work out. Berman's voice was shot, and the radio feed on ESPN-FM was nearly a minute BEHIND the TV feed, you almost never see that.

Meantime the game ends, the other one's already begun. I don;t need a wrapup show and 15 minutes of commercials between. arrgh

A real disaster.

Re: NLDS IST - Cincinnati v SF

I mentioned in another thread that Berman & Sutcliffe (even apart) are my two least favorite announcers working today. I dread just thinking of them working together.

Sutcliffe's problem is that he reminds me of a football announcer in that he thinks every single play/pitch/call/decision needs to be analyzed to within an inch of its life.
Berman's problem is that he reminds me too much of Chris Berman.

The Reds have named Mike Leake to start Game 4 later today (trying to steal a win maybe?) a move that's significant because Leake wasn't on the roster to start the series. They've made room for him by removing Johnny Cueto, a move that requires Cueto not only to sit out the remainder of this round but also the next one should the Reds stay alive. Cueto would be eligible again for a potential Cincy WS roster.

Not to go all Chris Russo on start times and TV ratings and whatnot, but how can they have a decisive game 5 (featuring a west coast team, mind you) first pitch at 1 PM Eastern? And I know the real answer, that the almighty tv dollar insists the MFYs get the primetime slot. But got that sucks if you are a Giant fan in SF. Yeah. All in all, pretty easy questions. (the producer guy actually asked if I wanted full history or just recent stuff. He also asked if I wanted the 3 questions or the lightning round style, so should've gone for the other..)

The third question is pretty easy too, even if you don't pay that much attention to numbers. I kicked myself immediately afterwards and realized the right answer, but alas.

3. What number did Bobby Valentine wear as Mets manager?

Those number questions can mess you up in a pressure situation-- it's the kind of thing where you'll have it if you relax and let it float to the top of your head, but too much thought/mental work and you'll likely talk yourself into something.

Re: NLDS IST - Cincinnati v SF

I said 12, which of course was Willie Randolph's number. It just seemed so right.

The producer said I seemed so sure. I thought I heard him say to someone else after "that was pretty good" and thought that meant for sure I'd get on, but I managed to spot the episode once (It's at a beer festival on Governor's island.) and I wasn't on it. alas.

I was the first person to go that day. I'd barely walked in and they flagged me down (I was wearing a Mets shirt, obviously, it was Subway Series weekend. Santana I think.) and asked if I wanted to be on the show. I hadn't even had beer yet. They brought me over to the side and had me sign the waiver stuff or whatever, and then we were off. took like 15 minutes tops. Was introduced to Amber or whatever her name was and off we went. (coincidentally, prettier in person)

Yeah, the first part is definitely the Yanx ruling prime-time forever and ever.
The part about the swapped NL starts (exactly the opposite of yesterday while the AL stays the same) I suspect is because MLB knew going into yesterday that there'd be a Nats/Cards game while a Reds/Giants game #5 was still up in the air. So if they're going to "lose" a game they'd prefer it to be the 1PM slot and so giving StL/Wash the 4PM slot means no last-minute time changes no matter what happened to Cin/SF
Yeah it sucks for some teams but whatyagonnado?

And this is the real reason that they want to go back to the 2-2-1 format next year. Not because of the supposed home-field advantage reason (even though I'm sure that will be often cited) but because it builds in more off days and doesn't saddle them with as many 4-game days.

Maybe not for all of them but they did for most of them and for the ones involving coast-to-coast travel you really have to. Plus, since you never know until game 4 is over whether 5 is going to be necessary, some planned off days get built even if they're never used. Then they even built in extra off-days a couple years ago in the 2nd round LCSs [something like 2 - travel/off - 2 - no travel but off anyway - 1 - travel/off - 2] so as to reduce the number of AL & NL games that occurred on the same day - again for TV purposes.
2009 was the year they used that to the highest degree and it was a large part of what allowed the Yanx to win the WS using like three pitchers the whole post-season.

I guess I was thinking of 2005 when the Angels had to play a game 4 ALDS in NY, game 5 in Anaheim, then game 1 of the LCS in Chicago, on three straight nights. You're right about the extra days in the LCS, those were a joke.

And Ludwick bounces back to the pitcher.

The bigger crime on the bunt play was Hanigan not swinging at a borderline 3-2 pitch when he knew the runners were going. Dusty had started the runners on the previous pitch (pitch fouled off) so it's not like the play came as a surprise to him.
Supposedly Hanigan is a contact-type guy [looking it up ... yup, 37 Ks in 300+ ABs] so, if you're going to send the runners he wasn't a bad guy to have up there.
Bottom line: I don't love the call as a Reds fan, but I hate the (lack of) execution more

The bottom line is that Berman is ESPN's 800 pound gorilla (almost literally - in both senses) meaning that he gets to choose what he wants to do and all other peons must get out of the way. Broadcasting skill and knowledge of baseball don't enter into the equation.
Plus he's a SF Giants fan so naturally he chooses that one.

AND ... Berman's partner in their 12 hour weekly football-hype/pre-game show Tom Jackson just happened to show up to the broadcast booth during one of the games in Cincy. What are the odds?!?
So ESPN got to use an ESPN broadcast property to promote another ESPN upcoming event. How convenient is that?!?

Something I didn't know and learned from last week's SI:

Melky Cabrera would have been eligible after SF played their fifth postseason game (game 1 LCS), but team management told him he wasn't welcome. I really wasn't aware how the postseason fit into the 50-game suspension, but I guess I know now.
