There is nothing you long for on a desert island perhaps more than a boat to come and take you away. And there's only one song that gives you the mantra to keep hope alive for that boat. That song has to be a sailing song that charted in the US during the 1971-1980 time period.

"Wooden Ships"? "Sloop John B"? Too early. "Key Largo"? "Southern Cross"? Too late. "Edmund Fitzgerald"? Power boats don't count. These songs may be spiritual cousins to their seventies sisters, but no other decade speaks to the easy joys of raising the canvas and plowing a silver furrow across a glass horizon.

Re: Sailing Away from a Desert Island

There's a port on a western bay
And it serves a hundred ships a day
Lonely sailors pass the time a way
And talk about their homes
There's a girl in this harbor town
And she works laying whiskey down
They say Brandy, fetch another round
She serves them whiskey and wine

The sailors say...

Chorus: Brandy, you're a fine girl < you're a fine girl > What a good wife you would be
Your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea

Re: Sailing Away from a Desert Island

Seventy-three men sailed up
From the San Francisco Bay,
Rolled off of their ship
And here's what they had to say.
"We're callin' everyone to ride along
To another shore,
We can laugh our lives away
and be free once more."
But no one heard them callin',
No one came at all,
'Cause they were too busy watchin'
Those old raindrops fall.
As a storm was blowin'
Out on the peaceful sea,
Seventy-three men sailed off
To history.
Ride, captain ride
Upon your mystery ship,
Be amazed at the friends
You have here on your trip.
Ride captain ride
Upon your mystery ship,
On your way to a world
That others might have missed.

I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Released July 1970
Recorded 1970
Genre Rock
Length 9:58 (album)
5:31 (single)
Label Capitol
Writer(s) Mark Farner
Producer Terry Knight

"I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)" is an epic 1970 song written by American musician Mark Farner and recorded by Grand Funk Railroad as the closing track to their album Closer to Home. Ten minutes in duration, it is the band's longest studio recording. One of the group's best-known songs, it is composed as two distinct but closely related movements. Its title has been rendered in various ways across many different Grand Funk albums, including "I'm Your Captain", "I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home", "Closer to Home/I'm Your Captain", "Closer to Home (I'm Your Captain)", and "Closer to Home".[1]

The song conveys the pleas of a captain on a troubled sea voyage and facing a mutiny from his crew. Its use of an orchestra during the long repeated refrains of the closing movement served to differentiate it from much of Grand Funk's work. Several interpretations of the song have been given; most revolve around the Vietnam War, and "I'm Your Captain" is popular among veterans of that conflict. The record was a modest hit single when first released, but achieved greater airplay on progressive rock radio stations. It has become a classic rock staple and has appeared on several audience-selected lists as one of the best rock songs of all time.

I'm your captain, I'm your captain,
Though I'm feeling mighty sick.
Everybody, listen to me,
And return me, my ship.

I'm your captain, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'm your captain, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'm your captain, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'm your captain, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

I'm sorry, but "I'm Your Captain" performed by a sweaty and topless, pink and gay Grand Funk at a stinking-of-reefer early seventies Shea with Mepham High longhairs getting their groove on in a top-of-the-dugout freakout at a festival whose security clearly surrendered to the anarchy 40 minutes prior --- that is the opposite of boring.

So I'd like to know where, you got the notion
said I'd like to know where, you got the notion

to rock the boat, don't rock the boat baby
rock the boat, don't tip the boat over
rock the boat, don't rock the boat baby
rock the boat-t-t-t-t

Ever since our voyage of love began
your touch has thrilled me like the rush of the wind
and your arms have held me safe from a rolling sea
there's always been a quiet place to harbor you and me

Our love is like a ship on the ocean
we've been sailing with a cargo full of, love and devotion

So I'd like to know where, you got the notion
said I'd like to know where, you got the notion

To rock the boat, don't rock the boat baby
rock the boat, don't tip the boat over
rock the boat, don't rock the boat baby
rock the boat-t-t-t-t

Up to now we sailed through every storm
and I've always had your tender lips to keep me warm
oh I need to have the strength that flows from you
don't let me drift away my dear, when love can see me through

Our love is like a ship ...

It's just that it's like being asked to name a Shawshank and a Redemption and then completely spacing and forgetting about The Shawshank Redemption. Probably slipped my mind as it wasn't in the same mellow space as most of the aforementioned records.

"Rock The Boat" and "Rock Your Baby" represent the essence of musical/chronological conflation in my book, rocking Top 40 radio in the summer of 1974 for weeks on end. But "Rock The Boat" is the happy and seaworthy one.

well, it should have been!

and STYX is my guilty pleasure... this rock band from Chicago, with prog rock roots and theatrical / concept album aspirations, put out 4 multi-platinum albums in a row in the lats 70s-early 80s, right in my musical wheelhouse. And "Come Sail Away" was the breakout single from GRAND ILLUSION, their first mega-album, and it rushes back to me whenever i hear a locker door slam.

i will not make apologies for it, or for myself for loving it.

they also had "Boat on the River", but it was 1980, and only charted in Germany (?). But a damn nice melody with accordion and mandolin accompaniment.

Re: Sailing Away from a Desert Island

Here's an interesting thing I didn't know.

The Beach Boys' HOLLAND album was named so because, at the urging of manager Jack Rieley, the band members and all their studio equipment were sent to the Netherlands to record. Once they got there they realized the equipment wouldn't work with European power circuits, necessitating a colossal waste of money to ship it all back. The band members nevertheless spent months there, and wrote & recorded some interesting stuff, but when they returned to California label executives hated the album and wouldn't release it unless it contained something they could market as a potential hit. So they turned to Brian Wilson who always had some songs lying around and found "Sail On Sailor." It was the only song not recorded in Holland on that record, and sung not by Brian, nor Carl, nor Dennis nor Mike nor Al but by Blondie Chaplin, the black South African who'd joined the group when they kicked out Bruce Johnston.

But when I think of STYX, I still remember the (post game clubhouse) picture of Tony LaRussa wearing a STYX t-shirt. An orange one. Is it possible to un-remember something scary?

Re: Sailing Away from a Desert Island

This is the poll hijacked from hijackers by other hijackers. It's the ship whose crew has long since forgotten what the mission was and who the commander was when they left port.

I always thought of Chaplin a mixed-race individual, thus the moniker "Blondie." He and Ricky Fataar joined the Beach Boys out of the Brit South African expatriate band The Flames, who sort of were to the Beach Boys as Badfinger was to the Beatles (first band signed to the vanity label, produced by and composed for by members of the parent band) and sort of were to the Beach Boys as Poco was to the Eagles (flunky band to steal members from whenever you have an opening).

Did I ever tell you I met Blondie once? When I first moved to NYC for a while I rented a room in the apartment of a tall black former fashion model in Hell's Kitchen.

Blondie then was touring with the Stones (he may still be), having been kicked out of the BBs by the time 15 BIG ONES came out. Somehow, the roomy and Blondie were friends, I got the impression it was a visit every time he came to town kinda thing. Anyway I was just passing through the kitchen when they all there, smoking and drinking. I knew the name and knew he'd been a Beach Boy and mentioned as much upon our introduction, seemed like a swell guy. He was light-skinned, you're right prolly of a mixed race.
