Congratulations to my talented husband on winning the NJCCA's Legal Fiction Writing Competition. His short story, Fool Me Twice, will be published in their online November 2012 newsletter.

That's great news!

And just so you know, if he starts writing illegal fiction, I'm going to have to report him to the authorities.

I'm going to wager that I'm the only one here who gets this allusion.

Re: D-Dad is a Winner!

Thanks, guys. The funny thing is that before the final decision was announced, the chairman of the competition contacted me and asked me to re-write several sections of the story to (a) remove a reference to Alex Rodriguez and substitute a fictional name; (b) change a reference to a real drug manufactured by Johnson & Johnson (the counsel for which are members of the NJ Corporate Counsel Association, the sponsor of the competition) and change it to a fictional drug; and (c) remove R-rated language, which might offend certain members of the Association if it were published in the Association's newsletter. So, the story that will be published is not the actual story -- it's an edited-for-TV version. But what the heck.

The announcement of the competition said something like "if you're the next John Grisham" and "if you have a novel in the making" -- but then the rules for the competition included a 5,000 word limit, which is not nearly long enough for a novel. As it was, I had to really cut down the original story in order to get it to fit into 5,000 words.

But heck - you have to be flexible sometimes! After the official publication in the NJCCA newsletter, I'll post a link (to the original version) that my friends and colleagues can access.

Cheers!

Congrats D-Dad.
But I guess the notion of "free expression" is the real "legal fiction" in this contest.

Re: D-Dad is a Winner!

But here's the problem i have when i read a phrase like: "Legal Fiction Writing Competition"...

Legal Fiction - a fact assumed or created by courts which is then used in order to apply a legal rule which was not necessarily designed to be used in that way. Also, the personhood of corporations is a form of "legal fiction".

so is this a writing competition for stories that are based on some form of legal Fiction?

or

Is it a LEGAL fiction writing competition, which requires stories based on legal, rather than illegal conduct? (No porn, no crime stories, etc),
or perhaps is just descriptive and comparative to those other ILLEGAL fiction writing competitions?

or simply about legal issues?

You would think lawyers would draft clearer language for their contests. But of course if lawyers drafted clear language, no one would have to hire lawyers to explain it to them. So i guess its a kind of full-employment strategy.

D-Dad's a winner at least since merging with Metfairy, but congratulations on this affirmation, too.
