Mets planning to non-tender both Pelfrey and Torres, then try to bring them both back at cheaper rates.
But is that even permitted under non-tender rules?

Re: off-season rumors thread

Don't know if the rules have changed under the new CBA, but under the old one, if you want to re-sign your own players once they are declared FAs, you can't do it until well into Spring Training (forget the date).

Re: off-season rumors thread

The non-tender rules never were the same as the FA rules - and, as mentioned, those FA rules were changed a while ago anyway.
And none of this has anything to do with 10+5 players.

Non-tendering simply means you're releasing your rights to that player by not offering him a contract, if effect making him a FA prior to when he could earn that right on his own. Once that happens your team is able to sign that player just like any other team.
The upside to it all is that it allows teams to bypass arbitration rules and whatever minimum salary they'd have to offer by keeping the player. The obvious downside is that you now have competition for that player.

I'm not going to get too broken up if there is any "competition" for the services of Pelfrey or Torres.

Re: off-season rumors thread

there's speculation in the organization that Wright will be re-signed, but Dickey will be traded this winter if a long-term deal isn't reached relatively quickly.

I'd hate to see Dickey go, but it seems like a wise plan.

Re: off-season rumors thread

Trading Return Alot Dickey is probably a good idea if it can, frinstance, get us a couple young position players. Maybe that's a midseason 2013 thing though?

There is a rumor out that someone called Edgeward has signed 14 ballplayers from Niger on a Mets African scouting "mission."

This is 2012, we're not supposed to be referring to black players as Nigers anymore.

Ouch. Somebody's been visiting www.badpun.com.

Yeah, don't think I didn't spend one hour in three while overseas dreaming of setting up a baseball academy.

Angels rumored to be looking to deal pitcher Dan Haren and his $15.5 option for 2013.

No rumor at all in that they did pick up their $13mil option on RHP Ervin Santana and dealt him (along with a chunk of that bill) to the Royals for a minor league pitcher.

Re: off-season rumors thread

Papi re-ups for two years in Boston. I wasn't so sure this was going to happen after the late-season house-cleaning plus the fact that he had just over 300 ABs in 2012 and almost none of them after the ASB due to inuries. He also turns 37 later this month.
But it's not like he has to do anything other than DH and he did hit well when was able to get on the field. Combine all that with his good 2nd half of 2011 I guess they figure he's shown enough to be an acceptable risk for the next couple of years.
He's gotta be the senior statesman up there by now. Not only is the old gang from the 2004 WS team gone but so is most of the 2007 team. Pedroia, Lester & Ellsbury were part of that 2nd championship but they were all 1st/2nd year players at that point.
