Anthony Recker

RH hitting, 28-year-old catcher/1B claimed on waivers from the Cubs; had cups of joe with them this year and the A's in 2011.

Pretty good power in the minors (career 800 OPS). Attended same school as Zach Lutz and was coached by Zach Lutz' dad, Yogi.

Sounds like Nickeas's worth nightmare, a backup catcher who can hit.

Pacific Coast League, so that 800 is suspect. but..still probably a reasonable backup type guy.

Recker? I hardly knew her!

Listed at 6' 2" - 240. I'm guessing he's not a speedster.

Minor league stats show decent pop, lots of strike-outs, gets his walks. IOW, a Kelly Shoppach clone without the Pedro Beato price tag.

His PCL stats are mostly from Sacramento & Des Moines, two places you'd expect to be less hitter-friendly than many of the higher-altitude stops on that circuit so maybe there'll be less lost in translation in this case.

Sounds like he's worth a shot. Hopefully he'll play well enough to at least breathe on Josh Thole's neck a little.

Re: Anthony Recker

By mid-season he will be known as Anthony Raker.

If he can't play well enough to breath down Thole's neck, then he lacks a pulse.

I wouldn't hold my breath on this one.

Thole didn't get the job done this year, but the idea that the turnip truck should automatically promise improvements is folly.

Probably not in Thole's case, but Alderson will have to pick some turnips for the team.

Re: Anthony Recker

The Mets now have two alums from Avernia University on their 40-man roster ---- Recker and Zach Lutz.

Hell, he's already better than Nickeas. He's at least worth a look in ST. I wouldn't expect miracles, but it wouldn't take a miracle for him to improve our output from the catcher position.

Re: Anthony Recker

all he needs is a pulse and a functional knowledge of the game of baseball and he'll be an upgrade.

Vic is apparently very big on that pulse quality.

It will distinguish him from the stiffs currently populating our roster.
