That sexy ASG patch gets more than a little lost in there, I think.

I guess I'm shocked that this being the Mets and the new jerseys all about merchandising for the xmas season, why they wouldn't set up a faux "fashion show" and press conference with players parading down the runway etc.

They could get Tim Gunn to say "make it work!" and have Michael Kors to give a bitchy critique. This is NYC!

I don't know why you read derision into practically everything I write. Especially regarding this when it's often made to seem that I'm a leper or something for daring to like something that's not the way it's always been done. I don't like the haughty stance in baseball that anything new is wrong, whether it's different uniforms, more than 2 uniforms, the Wild Card or three divisions. If there's any derision it's to the concept that baseball can't do things different (or that the Mets shouldn't) because "That's not how we do things in baseball"

I'm not quoting you. these are general feels about the world of baseball, it has nothing to do with you. it was my opinion. If there's derision or ! it's at the sentiment I described, which is always expressed when uniforms come up.

Benjamin Grimm wrote:

Like this. That's fine, I respect your/his opinion to prefer white and gray/grey. I'm just tired of it. I don't believe there is any need for it to be that way. there's no disrespect or tarnishing of tradition if the Mets want to have 18 uniforms and not regular schedule of how they wear them. There's nothing wrong with the black besides the idea that many don't like them.

This is, again, all my opinion. any excitement is for the Mets being willing to change and not try to fit the uniform scheme into some box defined years before they even existed.

I'm not really sure what's cheaply derisive about this opinion.

Apparently there is more to the new look including an orange-brimmed cap.

I still can't over what little the Mets are doing around this. It's not at all like the Mets to miss an opportunity to try and sell stuff and new unis is something the MFYs can never do.

I'm all for tweaking the concept when the time is right, and after the Mets swing to retro with the creamy pinstripes a few years back, the next swing has got to be the future. What I'd like to see them try is a Mr. Met logo cap, or maybe a "bridge-and-skyline" inspired design.

Well, I figured it was something subjective.

Really, though? The colored jersey is just something that the early folk didn't do (mostly for cost considerations, no); absent associations, the bright blue and bright orange, along with the jersey detail, look pretty good. (Ask a non-baseball-fan/non-purist with an eye.)

The hat? Well, on a small article of clothing, contrast between brights distracts; this is all the more problematic when your alternate/complementary color is brighter. It's pretty obvious here, the orange-brimmed hat at best gets in your eye's way, and at worst draws your eye away from the logo. Something that's non-functional-- taking attention away from what you're trying to underscore-- epitomizes bad design, doesn't it?

I'd say complimentary colors on alternate panels is a solid design basic. Your point that the brim distracts from the logo is not lost, however. It is, nonethess, a giant leap forward from black hat/blue brim with the orange and blue insignia.

Baseball aside... white dress, blue hat: classic, adorable, fetching, looks great against any background --- but certainly a green one --- and catches both natural and artificial white light in a way that makes you celebrate creation.

And let's not forget the calumnious tradition that has left solid color alternates traditionally worn on Sundays, when the brightness of daytime baseball would flatter the whites the best.

Alternative, the blue dress and blue hat... a garish, obnoxious attention grab that works best indoors under the jaundiced miasma of artificial yellow.

It's an outdoor summer sport, that looks best with an outdoor summer look, where bright saturated colors work best to accessorize.

And I think the culture of the team is best served when they honor their basics, and introduce variety in the details, rather than the foundation.

And having incurable herpes is better than having incurable tuberculosis. They're both less than ideal conditions to live with, though.

White's nice and clean in the summer-- I'm not arguing otherwise. But sometimes* blue and blue in the summer looks okay, too... especially on men and women of color. Would be surprised if many beyond Terry Collins are ever seen wearing it.

I wouldn't wear it. I'd just go capless for the post-game interviews.

hardly true, perhaps because you're not buying it they keep re engineering them to try to find something you'll buy. I can imagine some of the random variations the last couple of years have been selling well.

The official "Interview Cap" to be worn in pre/postgame stuff and charity events.

What. The. Fuck? To both the idea of such a garb (yeah I know the reason) and the design itself.

This is an assault on the eyes. Like the orange BP unis. Just fugly!

The point is that if fans refuse to buy the ugly ones then they won't be so quick to put out ugly ones (or at least the bath they'll take on the fuglies will be enough to keep them on their toes next time). But if the fans buy, regardless of aesthetics, every new design each year as if driven by some sort of sheepish or completionist urge then they'll keep changing 'em up and shoveling them out knowing they have a captive audience.

Saying no to unnecessary merchandise is a powerful weapon when used correctly.

Long Beach will get their boardwalk back, but until then they have something else rare and beautiful --- blue Mets caps without the orange dots.

Maybe the Clothes Do Make the Mets

...But it's their alternate blue road uniform that has become their fashion staple this year. Baseball superstition probably plays a big part in this: The Mets have a 15-10 record wearing it—including nine wins in their past 12 games. They've worn the alternate road blues the most of any of their seven uniforms so far this season...

Mr. Met will be appearing on the sleeves of the Mets alternate blue uniforms in 2014.

(That really should be "alternative uniform", by the way.)

They need to keep wearing the skyline logo on the road blues to intimidate the teams they visit when they deign to enter their puny Podunks. That impressive assemblage of edifices says in no uncertain terms, "Hey, ya hicks -- NEW YORK Mets here. See the patch on our sleeve? Yer not even gonna be a patch on our Empire State Building-size ASS when we're done with your tiny, tiny town."

The logo hasn't had that effect on opponents yet, but any day now.

Well, you may want to start stocking up on paint and posterboard, because I think that's exactly what it means.

I welcome Mr Met to the uni. It would be great if they gave pitchers the Mr. Met pitching one and the hitter the running Mr. Met though.

I like that idea. Or hitters can use the batting version of Mr. Met.

Eric Young can use the crying Mr. Met rain delay one since he can't hit.

This is a great idea.

Couldn't they keep the classic logo on one sleeve and put Mr.Met on the other? I mean, our regular one is the best logo in baseball. I can go with wearing em both, np.

I like the Met jacket that Collins wears that has the Mr. Met on the sleeve. But thats a jacket (and if I bought one I'd still probably have the logo put on the other sleeve).

Why do I think MLB will slam that idea because it'll break the concept of the team's uniforms being ... well, all uniform?

The universe wishes its logo was as stylish.

I love Mr. Met, although I don't think the players should wear him on their arms except for BP and Spring Training games.

The camo unis are awful - I hope they abandon that sorry experiment immediately!
