I've got the alternate blues
Edgy MD Nov 14 2012 07:46 AM |
And Johan Santana is sporting the alternate blues.

I guess I'm shocked that this being the Mets and the new jerseys all about merchandising for the xmas season, why they wouldn't set up a faux "fashion show" and press conference with players parading down the runway etc.

I like them, but I hope they're not used too frequently, especially at home. Like Edgy, I prefer white at home and grey on the road.

Ceetar Nov 15 2012 07:10 AM Re: I've got the alternate blues |
MORE COLOR! More variety. less adhering to traditions designed 100 years ago!
|
Edgy MD Nov 15 2012 07:20 AM Re: I've got the alternate blues |
That's kind of cheaply derisive. Why are the traditions of 30 and 40 years ago preferable?

Ceetar Nov 15 2012 08:03 AM Re: I've got the alternate blues |
||
I don't know why you read derision into practically everything I write. Especially regarding this when it's often made to seem that I'm a leper or something for daring to like something that's not the way it's always been done. I don't like the haughty stance in baseball that anything new is wrong, whether it's different uniforms, more than 2 uniforms, the Wild Card or three divisions. If there's any derision it's to the concept that baseball can't do things different (or that the Mets shouldn't) because "That's not how we do things in baseball"
|
Edgy MD Nov 15 2012 08:10 AM Re: I've got the alternate blues |
|||
I don't.
That's nonsense.
I don't know who you're quoting. It's not me, I'm certain.
|
TransMonk Nov 15 2012 08:15 AM Re: I've got the alternate blues |
I don't mind these blues...better than black. Like most here, I'm hoping they're not over-used.
|
Ceetar Nov 15 2012 08:20 AM Re: I've got the alternate blues |
||
I'm not quoting you. these are general feels about the world of baseball, it has nothing to do with you. it was my opinion. If there's derision or ! it's at the sentiment I described, which is always expressed when uniforms come up.
Like this. That's fine, I respect your/his opinion to prefer white and gray/grey. I'm just tired of it. I don't believe there is any need for it to be that way. there's no disrespect or tarnishing of tradition if the Mets want to have 18 uniforms and not regular schedule of how they wear them. There's nothing wrong with the black besides the idea that many don't like them. This is, again, all my opinion. any excitement is for the Mets being willing to change and not try to fit the uniform scheme into some box defined years before they even existed. I'm not really sure what's cheaply derisive about this opinion.
And this is sorta what I mean, i'm good for that too. I've always found the snow-whites to be extremely boring and bland.
|
Edgy MD Nov 15 2012 08:26 AM Re: I've got the alternate blues |

When you say it in response to my alternative preference, more than once, and then making up some quote, you're putting it on me. Nobody treats you like a leper.

more than once? you weren't even the last comment and I didn't quote you. you started with the derision stuff. I didn't say anyone treats me like a leper, I said it seems like that, to me, based on the attitude of many. Not specifically here or there, just in general around baseball.
That'd be neat. a bridge and skyline might make a nice patch, it might look weird on a hat. They've changed stuff three years running now. Didn't think have a press conference with Duda, etc modeling some of the new uniforms last year?

|
Edgy MD Dec 05 2012 01:52 PM Re: I've got the alternate blues |
Concur on the border. A BIG downside of the black hat was the orange shadow framing the blue insignia. Borders are for collies. Orange looks great against black, and it looks great against royal.

I just saw the pic of Ike and RA in their alternate blues. I don't like the blues. If I saw a hot chick at the game, or even in bed wearing one, it might be pretty cool. (Mrs. Ted concurs and has agreed to model one for me at a game, not in bed). They should be alternate chick-in-the-stands-or-in-bed-only-jerseys and that's it. Not to mention they resemble beer league softball unis or something in the meterosexual department at Modell's.

|
Edgy MD Dec 11 2012 12:51 PM Re: I've got the alternate blues |
Speaking for myself, because solid color jerseys and solid color hats (with or without contrasting colors) have different connotations, and play differently against the green and tan field on which the players cavort.

Edgy MD Dec 12 2012 07:51 AM Re: I've got the alternate blues |

I do! And I ask myself!
I would say it clashes, except orange and royal are perfectly complimentary colors.
I'd say complimentary colors on alternate panels is a solid design basic. Your point that the brim distracts from the logo is not lost, however. It is, nonethess, a giant leap forward from black hat/blue brim with the orange and blue insignia. Baseball aside... white dress, blue hat: classic, adorable, fetching, looks great against any background --- but certainly a green one --- and catches both natural and artificial white light in a way that makes you celebrate creation. And let's not forget the calumnious tradition that has left solid color alternates traditionally worn on Sundays, when the brightness of daytime baseball would flatter the whites the best. Alternative, the blue dress and blue hat... a garish, obnoxious attention grab that works best indoors under the jaundiced miasma of artificial yellow. It's an outdoor summer sport, that looks best with an outdoor summer look, where bright saturated colors work best to accessorize. And I think the culture of the team is best served when they honor their basics, and introduce variety in the details, rather than the foundation.
|
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Dec 12 2012 09:44 AM Re: I've got the alternate blues |

And having incurable herpes is better than having incurable tuberculosis. They're both less than ideal conditions to live with, though. White's nice and clean in the summer-- I'm not arguing otherwise. But sometimes* blue and blue in the summer looks okay, too... especially on men and women of color. Unless I'm mistaken, and they're switching to gigantic Frank Gehry-building-shaped monstrosities instead of ballcaps. Are they making that switch? *Y'know, when it's not a stacked deck from which you're dealing.

Edgy MD Dec 12 2012 10:12 AM Re: I've got the alternate blues |
||||
That's a powdery pastel blue on virtually transparent cotton on an toddler. It's as much a tribute to white as it is to blue.
Still lighter than the Mets' royal And nonetheless, still more than a touch loud and pushy. Slam a blue hat on 'em and they become shrill. This chick is in a conservative navy, which is what you wear as a daytime alternative to those stupid east coast situations where black is the rule, but she still is overloud and her powdery white skin become necessary to chill the effect. What are you, a Yankee fan?
Indoor eveningwear --- a different story.
|
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Dec 12 2012 10:21 AM Re: I've got the alternate blues |
Two of your hats-- one pro, one con-- are navy, too, stickler. And the only one of the others that's Met blue is vagina-shaped, and worn by a Fergie kid.

Point taken on navy. We have to work with what we got. I ain't praising navy. But rather that the deep saturated color in summer is best used as an accessory or detail.

The point is that if fans refuse to buy the ugly ones then they won't be so quick to put out ugly ones (or at least the bath they'll take on the fuglies will be enough to keep them on their toes next time). But if the fans buy, regardless of aesthetics, every new design each year as if driven by some sort of sheepish or completionist urge then they'll keep changing 'em up and shoveling them out knowing they have a captive audience. Saying no to unnecessary merchandise is a powerful weapon when used correctly.

They need to keep wearing the skyline logo on the road blues to intimidate the teams they visit when they deign to enter their puny Podunks. That impressive assemblage of edifices says in no uncertain terms, "Hey, ya hicks -- NEW YORK Mets here. See the patch on our sleeve? Yer not even gonna be a patch on our Empire State Building-size ASS when we're done with your tiny, tiny town." The logo hasn't had that effect on opponents yet, but any day now.

This is a great idea. Couldn't they keep the classic logo on one sleeve and put Mr.Met on the other? I mean, our regular one is the best logo in baseball. I can go with wearing em both, np.
