Any scotch drinkers out there?

Two drinks into this one tonight:

Got this one as a gift warming up on the on-deck circle:

Like, and like-like, respectively. Highland Park's got a nice, butterscotchy-fruity sweet thing going on, there.

I'm considering cracking my gift Oban now. Dammit.

Big fan of the Macallan. One day I hope to try the 18-year version of it. My local guy told me not to bother because after that, I'd never want to try another scotch.

I also like Lagavulin and Laphroaig though, because I love bitter smoky craziness.

Lagavullin and Laphroaig are supersmokecrazygogo-- love 'em both. Drinking the superpeaty stuff inevitably gives me late-night heartburn, though. Not that I don't still have them; it's just that when I do, it feels a little like Thelma and Louiseing off an Islay cliff.

Oban's been my mid-to-high go-to of late. Honeyed, full-bodied, lightly bourbon-y.

You mean to tell me that none of you guys have been swayed over to 'Johnny Walker - Black' by the ads for it on MLB.com featuring Jorge Posada?

There was a big Yankees-branded billboard for Johnny Walker on Astoria BLVD, right at the intersection where I would occasionally turn left leaving Citi Field to get to the bridge so that I had to stare at it while sitting at the light. EVIL!

anyway, I enjoy a good glass of scotch, but I don't own any as I usually stick to beer unless I'm out somewhere nice, which isn't that often. It's one of those things I'd like to have more but don't.

My grandfather's drink of choice. Also my little brother, for whom I keep this brand in the house. It does nothing for me personally.

Re: Single Malt

I had my first taste of single malt this weekend.

I was at Albacon and it turned out that there is a secret SF miniconvention that travels around the east coast called "Maltcon." The person in charge brings glasses and quite a few bottles of single malt, and others also chip in with some of the good stuff. Usually it's a closed party (hotels don't like it if you're serving your own liquor), but this time the door was open. I admitted I'd never tasted single malt before; my only experience with scotch was a taste I had 40 years ago that I didn't like.

The person running it had set up some of the cheaper stuff (McClelland) for beginner's sampling, and poured me the first -- a lowland scotch. I was surprised: it was like a Drambuie, a liqueur I liked, except without the sweetness. Next was a highland I liked even more, and a Speyside (my favorite). I finished with their version of Islay, though I was less fond of the peat taste.

He also served me a taste of a better lowland scotch. I'm definitely being a fan.

I don't describe beer, wine, and liquor well ... like this a lot:
