Liquidation
Edgy MD Nov 16 2012 07:43 AM |
Hostess after a Chapter 11 filing earlier this year and an employee walkout last month, announces plans to liquidate.

Mets – Willets Point Nov 16 2012 07:50 AM Re: Liquidation |
Good riddance! The future of processed crap should continue in this vein.
|
Benjamin Grimm Nov 16 2012 07:53 AM Re: Liquidation |
I rarely eat them, but I'd hate to think that I may have to spend the rest of my life in a world without Ring Dings.
|
themetfairy Nov 16 2012 07:55 AM Re: Liquidation |
Damn - Now I'm suddenly craving a Ring Ding....

Well, I'm certain many of their snack cake brands will continue under the stewardship of McKee or Weston or Flowers or somebody. I don't think of it so much as a victory for consumers against high-preservative sugary crap living a long shelf life at the local convenience store, so much as a victory by competitors who have done a better job streamlining production... of high-preservative sugary crap living a long shelf life at the local convenience store.

Edgy MD Nov 16 2012 08:00 AM Re: Liquidation |

I may have this backwards, but I think Ring Dings were pulled from the marketplace when Hostess and Drakes merged and it was seen as counterproductive to push competing products --- Ring Dings, Ding Dongs, and Big Wheels --- simultaneously. Similar to when Mars bars were pulled from circulation after M&M/Mars acquired Snickers.
|
Benjamin Grimm Nov 16 2012 08:12 AM Re: Liquidation |
Maybe. The last time I had Ring Dings was in November of 2010. (I had to fast for a colonoscopy and I wanted to celebrate the breaking of that fast with a favorite treat from my childhood.)

HahnSolo Nov 16 2012 08:31 AM Re: Liquidation |
The Hostess product I still eat occasionally and will miss is the Lemon Fruit Pie. As a kid, I was all over the Twinkies.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Nov 16 2012 08:39 AM Re: Liquidation |
Yeah, the cheap nutrition-free snack cake industry is alive and well. What's dead are industrial bakeries where men could make a living.

i'm... not really sure that i've ever had a twinkie.

You'd better eat one today just to get it off your bucket list.

metsmarathon Nov 16 2012 10:05 AM Re: Liquidation |
but if i never eat a twinkie, perhaps that is the key to my imortality!

The shelf life on those things is probably measured in decades so, y'know, there's no rush.

The perfect food. It's a sign of the decline of America that people prefer Little Debbie to Hostess.
|
Benjamin Grimm Nov 16 2012 11:09 AM Re: Liquidation |

I feel the same way about TastyKake. In the Philadelphia area, they crowd the Hostess/Drakes stuff off the shelves.
|
Swan Swan H Nov 16 2012 11:14 AM Re: Liquidation |
That's all good, but the Suzy Q will be what I miss most, despite not having had one in at least five years.

They've been liquidated to me ever since they killed off Choco Bliss.

seawolf17 Nov 16 2012 12:05 PM Re: Liquidation |
Had to run to Target today -- expected the Hostess shelf to be completely cleaned out. Not the case at all; they were stocked full. Bought two boxes of Cupcakes.

Whatever they do, I hope the costumes are still available.
|
Vic Sage Nov 16 2012 12:27 PM Re: Liquidation |
i loved Twinkies; Cupcakes and Ding Dongs were ok. Sno Balls were the Devil's confection. And i liked the fruit pies, but they're pretty much all the same to me.

The Drake's factory is around the block from where I work. I wonder if I can just walk in there and out with some cakes.

Get me one case of Devil Dogs. HOLY CRAP I didn't even realize this would affect Devil Dogs. Time to panic.

Swan Swan H Nov 16 2012 01:56 PM Re: Liquidation |

You could probably walk out with a 55-gallon drum of creme filling.
|
Vic Sage Nov 16 2012 01:59 PM Re: Liquidation |
HOSTESS bought DRAKE'S in the 1990s. WONDER BREAD, too. But don't worry, you won't "lose" any of their main brands. They'll just get bought up by some other crap peddler.
|
Ceetar Nov 16 2012 02:00 PM Re: Liquidation |

I so would too. Hell, get a pastry gun, fill up some 'water' balloons.. Thanksgiving is gonna be a blast this year.
|
Edgy MD Nov 16 2012 02:25 PM Re: Liquidation |

And... Weston, as of two hours ago or so, has already gobbled up Wonder Bread. I, for one welcome our new Canadian overlords. Seriously, people. Enough with the lamentations. Legacy brands of high-carb, nutrition-free comfort food are not going anywhere.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Nov 16 2012 02:53 PM Re: Liquidation |
I believe Wonder and a lot of other iconic 'Merican breads are also made by the Mexicans at Bimbo (pronounced BEEEM-bo).
|
Mets – Willets Point Nov 16 2012 03:01 PM Re: Liquidation |

Sad but true. The crap food products will persist while thousands suffer unemployment and the corporatist shits will take a parting shot at unions after giving themselves massive raises.

It's amazing how many "AMERICAN BEER ONLY!" people don't realize this.
|
seawolf17 Nov 17 2012 08:19 PM Re: Liquidation |
Is it weird that I actually enjoy regular Budweiser? I've really only developed a taste for beer in the last few months, but it's one of my simple favorites.
|
Ceetar Nov 17 2012 08:47 PM Re: Liquidation |

Not weird, they brew it particularly to have no distasteful tastes.

I think Grupo Bimbo should buy Hostess, just because it's fun to say.

Nymr83 Nov 18 2012 12:34 PM Re: Liquidation |
possibly the greatest name for a business ever. who doesnt want a group of Bimbos?

"Pronounced 'Beem-bo" or "throatwarbler mangrove." Your choice.

G-Fafif Nov 18 2012 09:11 PM Re: Liquidation |

Most underrated creme-filled snack cake ever. I find it not at all coincidental that in the year I swore off sugar, this company I had enthusiastically supported for decades went under.

the media was blaming the workers?
|
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Nov 19 2012 08:43 AM Re: Liquidation |
|
By reporting that Hostess' work stoppage caused the bankruptcy without mentioning context-- namely, that the stoppage was caused by an ask for massive pay cuts/pension-payment stoppage as executives gave themselves massive raises-- the blame is implicit (if possibly unwitting).
|
Ceetar Nov 19 2012 08:47 AM Re: Liquidation |

Ceetar Nov 19 2012 02:07 PM Re: Liquidation |
Brilliant. Play the "we're going under" game of chicken, get a boatload of free publicity, and then come to the table and try to get things worked out?
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Nov 19 2012 02:12 PM Re: Liquidation |
Same judge in the Hostess case as the one who heard A&P's labor-crushing Chapter 11.
|
Mets – Willets Point Nov 19 2012 04:02 PM Re: Liquidation |
I still kind of want to see the headline: "Grupo Bimbo seeks to acquire Ho-Ho's and Ding Dongs."
|
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Nov 19 2012 07:26 PM Re: Liquidation |
Funny-- my first thought at hearing that management requested clearance to liquidate wasn't about Twinkies or the like-- it was that this seemed like a bold brand of labor-relations-chicken.

Nope. If you have an established trademark, it's asy enough to keep a digital identity alive. Even The Sporting News can do that.
