Non-Tenders of 2012-2013

MLB Rumors has a handy list of non-tendered players. Go to this link and hit the filter box on top to select only non-tendered players.

Any of these motlies make sense for the 2013 Mets? Might Geovany Soto be worth a flyer, hoping he'll reclaim his 2008 and 2010 abilities, or is a return in the cards for Jesus Flores? Is Ben Francisco worth a look as a fourth outfielder? Tom Gorzellany, Mets LOOGY? Odds are one or more of these folks will be in St. Lucie in February. Whaddaya think?

Was just looking at that list. Here's a c&p:

Soto jumps out & I'd be kicking the tires on Rich Hill. John Lannan seems like a guy who'd end up on the Mets, though (hometown boy, can 'eat innings', boring).

Manny Acosta Mets
Robert Andino Mariners
Scott Atchison Red Sox
Jacob Brigham Rangers
Anthony Carter White Sox
Jaye Chapman Cubs
Jesus Flores Nationals
Ben Francisco Rays
Tom Gorzelanny Nationals
Jack Hannahan Indians
Rich Hill Red Sox
Dan Johnson White Sox
Jair Jurrjens Braves
Jeff Karstens Pirates
John Lannan Nationals
Jermaine Mitchell Athletics
Peter Moylan Braves
Wil Nieves Diamondbacks
Juan Oramas Padres
Manny Parra Brewers
Mike Pelfrey Mets
Rafael Perez Indians
Stuart Pomeranz Orioles
Zach Putnam Cubs
Omar Quintanilla Orioles
Mark Reynolds Orioles
Derrick Robinson Royals
Nate Schierholtz Phillies
Daniel Schlereth Tigers
Chris Seddon Indians

Mark Reynolds would be fun to pinch hit now and then.

Given the Mets financial constraints, I think that John Lannan would be signable. We know he's a New Yorker (from all the shots of his parents at Citi Field whenever he pitches) so maybe he would take less to pitch near his home. We keep hearing about how starting pitching is the Mets strength but they need depth so they don't have to rush anyone and don't have to resort to the likes of Chris Young and Jeremy Hefner anymore.

I agree with Swan Swan H about Flores and Gorzelanny.

On MLB Tonight last night, Mitch Williams said that the Mets will end up with J. P. Arencibia while Tom Verducci agreed that the Mets would get a catcher but said it would be Jarrod Saltalamacchia (longest last name in MLB history, per Wikipedia).

I heard they considered signing both Arencibia and Saltalamacchia for the catching crew but didn't have enough A's for the back of the jerseys and [required 'pon joke]Jeff was too cheap to buy more[/required joke].

Both/either are higher-power/low-average types so would, on the surface, be a decent compliment to Thole. Arencibia bats RH, Salty is switchy.
I don't think either is considered all that great defensively and 'lamacchia's power certainly wouldn't be at CF what it was at Fenway.

Flores sounds tempting but, since his injury back in '09, is about .210/.250/.320 over 260 ML ABs and wasn't much better in AAA this summer either.
Even with the Nats top catcher getting hurt he couldn't hang on to the regular job forcing the team to go out at mid-season and deal for the .218/.250/.278 hitting Kurt Suzuki (who promptly went .267/.321/.404 after the trade).

Because hey, somebody's gotta strike out in a big spot with Jason Bay not around.

Re: Non-Tenders of 2012-2013

I seem to remember Lannan killing us every time out, so I checked him out.

Career: 42-52, 4.01 ERA
vs Mets: 5-4, 3.46 ERA

Career: 134 starts, 2 CG, 1 SHO
vs Mets: 12 starts, 2 CG, 1 SHO

So I'm more or less correct, although not as exaggeratedly as I'd think. Either way, I'd definitely give him a shot. Actually a bunch of arms on that list I'd take a shot at.

Grab as many of the aforementioned catchers as possible. As long as the bidding isn't ridiculous, Gorzelanny works as both the longman/spot-starter and a second lefty.

I'd also give Jurrjens-- really only a year removed from Cy Young-ishness-- a nice long tire-kick.

It takes a tough man to make a non-tendered chicken.
