Mets 2013 Outfield

Since there may be as many as three outfield positions to fill, I figure this topic should see quite a bit of discussion.

Let's start it off with this:

Adam Rubin wrote:
A team insider said piecing together two righty-hitting outfielders from the free-agent market is doable, although the dwindling list includes few names: Scott Hairston, Cody Ross, Jeff Baker, Austin Kearns, Reed Johnson and Matt Diaz among them. The Mets insider added there are trades available for the Mets to accept that would yield similar talent.

Nieuwenhuis is going to get at least some time. Duda probably as well. I think Baxter has earned at least one of the five spots.

My preference would be for two 'regulars' among the other two spots, but I suspect it'll be more like one "big" guy and a Hairston type to split time with Kirk and Lucas depending on their splits.

How about starters Nieuwenhuis in CF..Duda in RF...and a yet to be determined slugger in left.

I see Baxter as a AAAA

I dunno. Funny how the Hard-Drinking Ike Davis Will Be Traded story has vanished, but I still find it difficult to believe the Mets are comfy with Doodoo out there in right again next year.

If we had money to spend, this is where I'd spend it.

Re: Mets 2013 Outfield

I think Duda's slated for LF, hopefully with some guy who knows what he's doing in RF.
I had the same thought Swannie had about Schierholtz before he signed, a real good fielder w/a true RF arm who would have been a better fit if he swung RH.

Also wouldn't shock me if Nieuwenhuis started the year out in Vegas although that would mean they need to pick someone up who can play CF - and in my mind I don't think that includes Valdy.

Oh Lord. Won’t you find us
an outfielder who sends
ball over fences? With our outfield, he’d blend.
Each year’s RBI would be a dozen times ten.
And Lord, for that player, we’d find
money to spend.

Oh, Lord, can you get us
two relievers or three?
With blazing fastballs that make batters pee.
A bullpen like that would be so pleasing to see.
And, Lord can you toss in a catcher for free?

Valadius isn't the only one who didn't get the news. On Monday's Mets Hot Stove, both Kevin Burkhardt and Terry Collins mentioned that Zack Wheeler will likely start the season in Buffalo.

So much for the benefit of having a manager who had come out of the development system being more aware of what's going on down below.

Actually, that was just Terry's delicate way of letting it slip that Wheeler's going to be plucked by Toronto in today's Rule 5 draft.

Ryan Ludwick re-signs for the Reds, 2 years, $15M. That should help define prices a bit for the Cody Rosses and Scott Hairstons of the world.

Ross at 2/14 or thereabouts could be OK for this year and a good complimentary player for 2k14 Mets juggernaut.

Ross may make sense. Emotionally, though... hell, I'd rather have Dick Torino.

Whenever I see Cody Ross, I have an irrational urge to slap his smug little face.

Re: Mets 2013 Outfield

I said last year at this time that I thought whatever difference existed between Ross's and Hairston's numbers could be explained by their home parks, and I'm sticking with that. (Their 2012 seasons were close to identical, but Ross actually had the bigger platoon splits.) I'm a little disappointed that 2 years and $15M was more than the Mets would/could offer Ludwick; his numbers went to die in San Diego, and if you take out the seasons he began as a Padre there's no reason to think he's not worth that.

Buffalo until the Mets trade R.A. and Niese.

Re: Mets 2013 Outfield

There's probably no bigger need than to find someone who can play the outfield and protect SucroseTrousers in the lineup. Pretty much anything else you can mix and match; the other two OF spots, the bullpen, even the starting rotation if need be. This is the one thing that'll make a difference between a comfortable third or fourth place finish and a nervous September looking over our shoulders at the Marlins playing over their heads.

Re: Mets 2013 Outfield

yeah, a cleanup hitting CFer sure WOULD be nice. Didn't we used to have one?
Anyway, it's not like they grow on trees, or like we could afford one if one was available. How much is Josh Hamilton going to go for? And he's an addict.
And even if we could trade for one, who would that be? Who would be a "difference maker" in that role that could be obtained for a good pitcher like Dickey or even Niese?

Re: Mets 2013 Outfield

I think a healthy Ike Davis can protect Wright well enough, but I would agree that a solid righthanded complement is more of a necessity than a luxury.
