The American League, at the urging of Oakland owner Charles Finley, approved the use of the Designated Hitter starting in the 1973 season.
If ours were a truly civilized country flags would be flying at half-mast on this date.

Geesh, the same day as the last lunar landing.

This nation needs to figure out a way to once again a) have a person walk on the moon and b) have American League pitchers bat for themselves.

Maybe they can combine the two: Change the rule so that the DH is only used in games played on the moon.
