Don't Go

Maybe it's the whole Connecticut thing --- it most definitely is, in part --- but I've got no stomach for reading about any trades of any R.A. Dickeys.

never did. was at the company party all day but it seems like a lot of speculation and none of the specific details you'd..maybe..get if the main cogs were in place.

Re: Don't Go

Should it happen, Toronto seems to be the front-runner according to various social and anti-social media. Here are a few facts that might help make this more palatable:

Andy Martino says that Travis d'Arnaud was a must in any deal. Speculating wildly off of that, I continue.

d'Arnaud was originally drafted by the Phillies, so if he does become a Met and a star Gary and Howie can mention that all the time.

d'Arnaud is a catcher who threw up a .975 OPS in 2012 (at hitter friendly Las Vegas, it must be said). He was limited to 303 PA due to a torn PCL that did not require surgery.

d'Arnaud grew up in California, and his favorite player was Mike Piazza.

For all of you trade-thread lovers, d'Arnaud came to the Jays organ-I-zation (as they say in Toronto) along with Kyle Drabek and Michael Taylor, in exchange for Roy Halladay. Taylor was sent to Oakland for Brett Wallace, who was later sent to Houston for Anthony Gose, who is rumored to also be coming to the Mets.

Re: Don't Go

A couple more:

d'Arnaud is listed as #15 on the Jays 40-man roster, and as far as I can tell 15 is open. (Widey - your site is down!) The Mets did pretty well with a guy wearing #15 behind the plate in the late '60s and early '70s.

R.A. Dickey vs. the Yankees who are likely to comprise their lineup for most of 2013 - 15/69 (.217) w/4 2B, 1 3B and 1 HR. The captain and the douchebag cop are particularly ineffective, each 2-13. (Rodriguez, on the other hand, mashes R.A. in his small sample - 7/16 with 2 2B).

Fred Lewis departed. 15 shouldn't be open though.

but then, I'm still hoping this doesn't happen.

And why wouldn't 15 be open? Are you expecting Val Pascucci back?

I want them to retire the number of the future Hall of Famer who spent 7 years with the team and was probably the best CFer of last decade.

Beltran was terrific, but retiring his number would be ridiculous.

not the thread for it, and I've made my case.

Seems like there are 'secret' pieces still involved in the trade, but no one's talking. makes it sound like we're awaiting physicals though.

Only if by "ridiculous," you mean "ridiculously apropos." Individual performance-wise (149 HRs, 100 steals, a .280/.369/.550 line, and 30.2 bWAR, over 7 seasons), there's a far better case to retire his number than Carter's (barely 10 bWAR, parts of 5 seasons). Hell, if we're talking onfield contributions, there's more of a case to retire #15 than there is for #17 (19.2 bWAR, 7 seasons). There MIGHT be a better case than there is for Piazza, even (22.8 bWAR-- 29.2 offensive WAR-- in 8 seasons).

But then, yes, this is for another thread. But if they're holding back Kid's 8 for the time being, I'd still rather give Arnaud, say, #51.

Re: Don't Go

Alot of moving parts to be worked on. Paperwork, Physicals Legalese and such to finish. Guessing tomorrow.

I don't like the different proposals but Dickey kinda sealed his fate at the Xmas Party. Bad judgement by R.A. that day.

I'm willing to bet that the Christmas party comments have no bearing on this trade.

At least I hope not.

Yup. If someone wants to accuse the Wilpons of acting that rashly, feel free, but I cannot in a million years conceive of Sandy Alderson trading someone for lesser value because of the sort of comments that Dickey made.

I am further willing to bet that if Travis d'Arnaud was not on the table Dickey would be signing an extension with the Mets this weekend. The more I read about him, the more I find to like, and the more perfect of a storm this deal is. Toronto already has a catcher that they can live with in Arrencibia, they feel the beast of the AL East is as weak as it has ever been, and they have a weather-neutral home field for their new knuckleballer.

I'm out of the loop. What did he say at the Christmas party? Did he profess love for Hitler? Did he kill and eat a puppy? Did he ask Sandy to show him the plan!!!!?

It really wasn't much, just that in a kid-themed team outing where "we're not here to talk business" comments would have been more appropriate, Dickey expressed some degree of frustration with the ongoing contract talks, which of course basically means that he didn't like the fact that they weren't offering more money.
At least one reporter took that as a jumping off point to suggest that RA maybe isn't the most beloved among his teammates and that he is often his own favorite topic of conversation. That, in turn, leads to speculation that maybe mgmt planted those stories as a cover to make a trade of a popular (with fans anyway) CY winner go down a little easier pr-wise.

Plus there were the Hitler-love and puppy-killing incidents.
