Re: Collin Cowgill to Mets for Jefry Marte

Well let's see now:
- turns 27 y/o in May
- a member of the rare throws left/bats right club !!!
- plays OF and particularly CF, which is no doubt the reason for getting him
- pieces of two ML seasons with Ariz & Oak but only 200 ABs total
- had a monster year in Reno (just to watch it fly) in 2011 but that season seems like the outlier compared to the rest of his career to date
- not a lot in the power department

Re: Collin Cowgill to Mets for Jefry Marte

He'll turn 27 in May. Outfielder who has played in 74 games in the big leagues (with Arizona and Oakland) over the last two years. In Reno (AAA) in 2011 he had 24 doubles, 8 triples, 13 homers and 30 steals in 98 games. (.354/.430/.554).

Was .254/.312/.373 at Sacramento (AAA) in 2012. 4 homers, 8 steals, 61 games.

If he gets off to a bad start, let's hope he's capable of a reverse Cowgill.

Is it fair to call this a no-future for no-present trade?

There was scoffing here in this forum when we got R.A. Dickey, as we were recently reminded.

A 26-year-old who has had some AAA success might very well be an improvement over what we currently have. Looks like a trade worth making, especially since it doesn't seem like Marte was going to contribute much.

I think figuring out which AAAA players may actually be MLBers who got that label unfairly may be the funnest part of GMing.

Maybe, considering the likes of Baxter and Quintanilla, it's one of those tasks this leadership team is good at.

Or maybe, considering the likes of Nickeas and Emaus, and the unnecessary exposure to waivers of Quintanilla, not so much.

Re: Collin Cowgill to Mets for Jefry Marte

Nothing wrong with this deal. Cowgill's 2011 was very good, and he's an excellent defender. I wouldn't expect him to anchor any playoff drives, but he's a cheap, potentially good option for a fifth outfielder.

Re: Collin Cowgill to Mets for Jefry Marte

With this team, he could turn out to be quite a bit more than a fifth outfielder.

I think a good New Years Resolution would be to try to be less creepy.

welcome to 2013. This is the world we live in. me googling new players on the team is extremely tame compared to what employers do to prospective employees. Wouldn't be irregular for the Blue Jays to have hired a PI to track Dickey and/or dig up stuff.

People are going ga-ga over a baby being born in England to a royal couple. Every celebrity's love love is public. I think googling for a little personal info on our 40ish entertainers is pretty tepid.

Nothing wrong with the Mets that more Cowgill won't fix.

His parents, his sister-in-law, and his nephew are not public figures.

Just because the internet allows you to track them down doesn't mean it's not creepy.

wife and kid of a public figure.

you'll note I didn't post them, just mentioned what I saw in the 15 minutes I spent looking. And the pictures I saw were mainly the ones retweeted by Collin. The Internet is not allowing me to track them down, they're broadcasting it to the Internet.

Re: Collin Cowgill to Mets for Jefry Marte

Does anyone else have an inkling that they are going to try to get by 2013 with trying out these AAAA types along with a veteran retread or two in the OF before going big next winter after the money supposedly frees up.

By "big" I am talking about Ellsbury as a FA and/or trading for Stanton (who, at that time, will be closer or at his arbitration years).

Unless they don't get the books balanced by next year, and then the austerity rolls over into another season.

There's a third prong of that strategy:

[list]AAAA Types + Veteran Retreads + Sudden Debuts by Out-of-Position Prospects[/list:u]

Who will be in 2013 what Daniel Murphy and Nick Evans were in 2008? What Jordany Valdespin was last year? I'm guessing Wilmer Flores makes a 2013 debut with perhaps enough time to get a dozen minor league outfielding games under his belt as a warmup. Reese Havens? Maybe he'll find the outfield safer than the getting slid at. Zach Lutz? I got news for you, kid: That Wright fella isn't going anywhere. Better learn a new trade.

At which point, assuming it actually happens, more people may come to realize that the only real difference that mattered between Wilpon and McCourt was the personal endearment of Selig.

It's always a bad idea to make assumptions that there's some kind of set-in-stone plan as to what will happen next winter until you know what's going to go on this summer. No one knows (as much as we like to think we do) what the situation will be a year from now (both team-wise and FA-market wise) and it was that kind of locked-in thinking that kept the Kazmir trade on the front burner even as the team was crashing in the standings leading up that year's trade deadline - and that turn-around was only about two weeks in the making.

Re: Collin Cowgill to Mets for Jefry Marte

There is a world of difference between Wipon and McCourt.

The Wilpons threw money into the Mets. Too often money that they didn't actually have. The McCourts took money out of the Dodgers.

Re: Collin Cowgill to Mets for Jefry Marte

While it didn't work out so well last year, I think it's premature to declare Lucas Duda and Kirk Nieuwenhuis and even Mike Baxter as AAAA guys or platooners.
