Starting Staff Stuff

Mets are looking for depth to the starting corps following the Dickey trade and to fill in behind the presumed core of Santana, Harvey, Gee & Niese - Davidoff today mentions the names of former Twins (among other places) Francisco Liriano and Carl Pavano as possible candidates.
"the Mets [have] reached out to the representatives of Carl Pavano and Francisco Liriano, among many others."

It makes sense that they're not going to count on Wheeler from Day 1 - and you'd like more back-up than the likes of Hefner & McHugh.
Besides, who EVER goes a season without needing 6th, 7th & 8th starters every now and then, if not longer. 'Twould be nice if this were the stop where Liriano suddenly rediscovers his youthful magic although as time goes on that possibility looks increasingly unlikely.

Exactly. When you don't make contingency plans, you end up needing Chris Young and Jeremy Hefner. And your AAA sucks which makes the locals hate you and want another affiliate. The problem is that with allegedly limited funds, they can't put multiple-AAAA pitchers in Las Vegas because they can't afford to sign them as free agents.

I wouldn't mind signing Chris Young. He pitched OK and seemed to be getting better by September as his arm healed. He'd be a good option as the fifth starter.

2011 Mets. think they really only needed the 6 until way after elimination.

also, two last year.

Heading into the 2012 season, only seven teams in baseball history were able to get at least 30 starts out of five separate starting pitchers -- the last time being the 2006 White Sox.
• 2012 Reds (Johnny Cueto, Mat Latos, Homer Bailey, Bronson Arroyo, Leake)
• 2012 Giants (Matt Cain, Madison Bumgarner, Tim Lincecum, Ryan Vogelsong, Barry Zito)
• 2006 White Sox (Mark Buehrle, Jon Garland, Freddy Garcia, Jose Contreras, Javier Vazquez)
• 2005 Indians (CC Sabathia, Cliff Lee, Jake Westbrook, Kevin Millwood, Scott Elarton)
• 2005 Cardinals (Chris Carpenter, Mark Mulder, Jeff Suppan, Jason Marquis, Matt Morris)
• 2003 Mariners (Jamie Moyer, Ryan Franklin, Joel Pineiro, Freddy Garcia, Gil Meche)
• 1993 Dodgers (Orel Hershiser, Tom Candiotti, Ramon Martinez, Pedro Astacio, Kevin Gross)
• 1980 Athletics (Mike Norris, Rick Langford, Matt Keough, Steve McCatty, Brian Kingman)
• 1977 Dodgers (Tommy John, Burt Hooten, Don Sutton, Rick Rhoden, Doug Rau)

The teams that make it through without needing alternate starters are teams that win championships.

I mean, look at our two championship teams --- fantastic health both times. It sucks to think about, but it takes a lot of luck in the injury department to win. You can build some insurance into the system, but it's a tough reality.

The 2006 Mets are an example of how it works out the other way, IMO.

10 guys made at least 5 starts and 13 different guys made starts.

Liriano just got two years and $14M from the Pirates. I don't mind taking a flier on upside, but that's way more than a flier..

That's a whole phone book.

and maybe as much use as one.

Would Roy Oswalt take another one-year, $5 million deal? I'd do that.

Not from us, I don't think.

I could go as high as 1-for-$12M on Marcum, though I don't think Sandy will.

I'm in. Never would've pegged Marcum as that good, but clearly he's slipped under my radar.

Re: Starting Staff Stuff

Erik Bedard...
...pulled a real Mike Torrez last year with Pittsburgh, getting the opening day start in the same season he got released, which is a meaningful feat from where I sit. He is also a Franco-Ontarian, and only developed a useful command of English as an adult. I did not know that![/list:u]

Dallas Braden...
...pitched a perfect game back in 2010. I had forgotten about that![/list:u]

Aaron Cook...
...suffers from pulmonary embolism. His career has been interrupted on occasion by debilitating blod clots, and he's had a rib removed in order to reduce pressure on a major blood vein. God then fashioned for him a wife from the removed rib. I did not know that![/list:u]

Freddy Garcia...
... has 152 career wins, but 76% of those came before 2007. I might have suspected, but know, I did not.[/list:u]

Justin Germano...
... is a man who is a major league pitcher, and apparently one who has been in the league long enough to be a fee agent. I did not know that![/list:u]

Jair Jurrjens...
...threw a no-hitter in the terrible movie Trouble with the Curve. But he has never actually pitched a big-league no-hitter, and in fact got farmed out by the Braves last year, which is pretty embarassing at the stage of your career when you're getting set to hit the free agent market. I did not know that![/list:u]

Jeff Karstens...
...once had his leg broken by a line drive off the bat of Julio Lugo. Julio Lugo! I did not know that was even possible![/list:u]

Kyle Lohse...
... had the best winning percentage in the league --- even better than Dickey. I didn't know that![/list:u]

Derek Lowe...
...is a career-long dick. I knew that![/list:u]

Shaun Marcum...
...is most to Larry McWilliams at this point in his career. Totally didn't know that! [/list:u]

Daisuke Matsuzaka...
... in the one season where he lived up to the Red Sox hopes in 2008, still managed to lead the walks. I didn't know that![/list:u]

Kevin Millwood...
... pitched six innings of a no-hitter last year before incurring a groin injury. I didn't know that either! Five other pitchers finished the game and the no-hitter, presumably with each of the first five also leaving with groin injuries and the last pitcher, Tom Wilhelmsen, finishing the game before collapsing at the bottom of the pig pile clutching his groin.[/list:u]

Dustin Moseley...
... threw only five innings last year after tearing his labrum and getting non-tendered. How would I know that?![/list:u]

Jamie Moyer...
... made his big league debut against Steve Carlton. I shit you not![/list:u]

Brett Myers...
...is... oh, fuck Brett Myers.[/list:u]

Roy Oswalt...
... apparently once cured himself of debilitating shoulder pain by accidentally electrocuting himself while working on his truck. The more you know![/list:u]

Carl Pavano...
...has collected $39 million from the Yankees for a total of nine wins. I kinda knew that but it's great to get the specific numbers in front of me![/list:u]

Jonathan Sanchez...
...despite only one good season, has a really pretty model wife wife name Audris Rijo. I didn't know that![/list:u]

Joe Saunders...
...grew up attending O's games and is thought to be headed to the Orioles this offseason for that reason. Folks shouldn't assume that![/list:u]

Tim Stauffer...
...like Mosely, got one start and totaled five innings last year. What's up with that![/list:u]

Chien-Ming Wang...
...began his cycle of career-interrupting injuries injuring himself on the basepaths in 2008. I did know that. What I didn't know and couldn't have known was that the public self-centered eruption this injury triggered from George Steinbrenner was the last such tantrum from George in his notorious career. I didn't know! [/list:u]

Kip Wells...
...is a former Long Island Duck. Didn't know that at all![/list:u]

Randy Wolf...
...is the brother of big-league umpire Jim Wolf. How did I not know that!![/list:u]

Chris Young...
...is somebody I know everything about![/list:u]

Carlos Zambrano...
...may be the best hitting pitcher of his generation, but he's hit .103 in 30 appearances as a pinch hitter, so some of that extra utility folks might hope to get when they sign him, well, that's never materialized. And that is something I didn't know![/list:u]

Most interesting selections for folks shopping on a budget: Cook, Marcum, Jurrjens.

I like Chien Mien Wang -- we need another guy not afraid to take a big shit on the mound.

He also defends with gusto.

The mound, anyway.
