2012 CPF Charity Gift Exchange (11th Annual??!!?)

A Boy Named Seo
Dec 03 2012 12:52 PM

Looked at the archives & the 2005 edition was called the 4th annual, so that puts this year at 11!! Damn, Sam.

A real nice tradition we've established here. For the new or the forgetful among us (->me<-), we've done a gift exchange where each participant gives the name of a charity they support. After a random drawing of names, each of us gives a donation of a pre-determined amount to the charity we drew. That's it.

If you're in, say so here & tell us what charity you support & we'll draw names once we have all our participants in. Years previous we've done $18, $20... in that range. Let us know what works for ya & we'll cement that, too.

Thank you Sharon for giving me a kick on this.

Happy Holidays, yall.

Thank you Seo - It's awesome that you head up this amazin' project every year.

In light of Hurricane Sandy, I'm choosing The American Red Cross' Disaster Relief Fund. The Red Cross continues to do important and necessary work in the aftermath of this unprecedented storm; I'd like to support those efforts and help them properly prepare for the next disaster(s) on the horizon.

As always I will go with the International Children's Heart Foundation, you can see the great work they do on their facebook page, some of the best cardiac surgeons, nurses etc. from this country donate their time and skills in various countries all over the world where that particular advanced surgery would not be available.

Happy to join in. My charity this year is the is The Hagedorn Little Village School, Jack Joel Center for Special Children.

My sister's nephew (on her husband's side) was born with Complete Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum, which essentially means that the major bundle of nerve fibers connecting the left and right hemispheres of his brain are missing. The progress that he has made at this school is incredible, and the sense of community that we see at their fund raising events is truly inspiring. I traditionally chose more global organizations, but over the past few years these folks are where most of our charity goes.

In! Heartside Ministries is a group in Grand Rapids that works with people in need, most of them homeless. My son has been volunteering there as part of his classwork for his social work degree. Eye-opening experience for him, and he's doing good things, mostly helping the "neighbors," as the call the clients, prepare to earn their GED.

I'm committed to making human trafficking the thing I push back against in 2013, as I really hate it and I was astounded how, in the wake of the Secret Service scandal, so many online insisted on viewing Americans whoring overseas as a victimless crime to be winked at.

But I can't really find any ratings for BTC, and I'm a little leery about their use of a photo of R.A. in his spring training clothes, so I'm going to have to trust Dickey with the ball on this one.

I've been a volunteer with a great org in LA for the last 6 years & have picked em previously, but this year I'm going with Save the Children. They do great work internationally with kids in education, health, & poverty, they're 4 stars (via Charity Nav), they're secular I just learned (I think I confused them with ChildFund/Sally Struthers), and they provided counseling services in Newtown. So this year, I'm with them.

Soooooo.......

We've got some really awesome charities again this year, some wonderful repeats and a few newbs, too. 24 total, counting the 2 each from CF & SS. Double thanks to those two. I assigned each a number based on when you replied to this thread and threw the numbers in this randomizer and it spit this out. If there are any charities you don't feel personally 'compatible' with and would like a swap, lemme know here or via email/PM/whatever. Otherwise, find your name and follow the arrow.

Yall are beautiful peeps & I'm pleased to know you, & pleased to know folks who would continue to take part in a little thing like this. Happy Holidays, Crane Poolers.

There were 24 items in your list. Here they are in random order.

1. fairy -> Herb Gardener (Clinton County SPCA)

4. Swanny -> LWFS (City Harvest)

Seo, thank you for doing this again. I feel very fortunate to have been assigned the charity you chose. As many of you may know, I grew up in Connecticut, so I'm happy to support a CT-based agency and their work with children in Newtown and around the world. I gave $50 and noticed on the donation page this message "*Right now, your gift can go twice as far. A generous donor will match every dollar donated on or before December 31st up to $500,000!" So Save the Children gets $100 altogether.

Thanks again for this annual event and thanks to everyone who makes this CPF community so great (even if I get crabby at you a lot).

Herb donated to Heartside Ministry, in fond hope of helping those in need to have a bit of a warmer winter with food in their bellies.

Happy New Year, everyone!

Thank you so much Herb! My son has been so impressed with the folks at Heartside. He sees first-hand the need. It's been eye-opening for all of us.

I stink at this. Year after year.

The American Red Cross is richer, but the Bombay Teens website remains down.

Edgy, any suggestions?
