I think they could have done worse. I always thought that if Nirvana tried to reform, they should do it with somebody distinctly unlike Cobain. Somebody old or female or somebody who sings in Spanish. I would have voted for Sinead O'Connor

Paul, on the other hand, is lefthanded, so he can play Kurt's guitars.

Re: In-121212-Concert-and-Discussion thread ...

The show was a lot of fun. Not much to report that couldn't be seen on TV, really. Crowd's big favorites were Billy Joel and the Stones. Biggest singalongs were Comfortably Numb, Living on a Prayer and Movin' Out. Biggest bathroom run/empty seats during (you guessed it) Alicia Keys and Kanye West.

Artists who don't use teleprompters: Roger Waters, Kanye West, Eric Clapton.

Stipe surprise appearance was notable just for him performing REM material live for the first time in over 4 years, I think. Was hoping for more inter-artist collaboration.

Still gathering my thoughts re: the Nirvana "reunion" but my first instinct is that it's great to see Grohl on drums for anything.

Edgy MD
Dec 13 2012 07:49 AM
Re: In-121212-Concert-and-Discussion thread ...

Yeah, obviously they couldn't make much of a statement with a one-song reunion. Clearly a deliberate tease.

But what it was... was pretty good.

Very surprised by Paul. His instrumental skills have eroded far less than the likes of Elton John or Billy Joel, and his band doesn't have to play watered-down versions of his songs to let the old man keep up.

Joe P. was complaining on Fartsbook that he wasn't playing his signature songs. I love that he said, "F. 'Hey Jude' and f. 'Yesterday' --- I'm Paul F. McCartney and all my songs are signature songs." Cheeky monkey. Only way he could have made me feel better would have been to dedicate "I've Got a Feeling" to me.

Agree with Kase that "Only the Good Die Young" really puts me off my food. It's a show-stopper in the worst sense of the term.

He started off good with his re-write of "Miami 2017," which was far more thoughtful than most name-check re-write attempts, but then descended into the gratuitous delivery of the oversaturated staples that was everything that I feared Paul would deliver. His voice was flatting more than a few times, too.

But speaking of bad voice, somebody throw a telethon for Michael Stipe.

The Alicia Keys song they closed with was a lovely melody sung by an excellent singer, but no lyric since "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" has been so laden with empty cliches. "Pocket full of dreams"?

Re: In-121212-Concert-and-Discussion thread ...

I fell asleep around 11, so i missed Joel and McCartney (and Stipe, apparently).

Things i liked:

- Mets content in Adam Sandler's song parody of "Hallelujah";
- a shout out to Coney Island by Jimmy Fallon;
- Buscemi and the drunken firemen;
- Bruce doing LAND OF HOPE AND DREAMS and CITY OF RUINS, with a verse from JERSEY GIRL;
- Clapton's acoustic blues on DOWN & OUT;
- Vedder on COMFORTABLY NUMB with Waters;
- Daltry actually hitting the high note on LOVE, REIGN O'ER ME and Townsend doing the windmill strum on PINBALL WIZARD, and
- The Stones kept it short.

Everybody's heart was in the right place, and clearly the producers were trying to raise money by appealing to the demographic that controls most of the wealth (aging baby-boomers), so this 2nd British Invasion seemed appropriate (despite the need to have resuscitation crews on standby), accompanied by their slightly younger American counterparts, like the B boys (Bruce, Billy and Bon Jovi), but the tepid attempt at contemporariness with the K Kids (Kanye and Keyes) seemed misguided. Even the representation of of grunge and alt/indie acts in the show (Rock's "middle period", if you will), with Grohl, Vedder, Martin and Stipe, seemed a little bit off target, but that's probably just me.

Bon Jovi looks like a middle aged woman.

Roger started badly vocally but improved as his shirt unbuttoned. I liked that they did "Bell Boy" and if the Moon thing was creepy, how else could they pull it off?

Kanye at least appeared to be trying to entertain but his material sucked and sounded awful.

Stipe looked lumpy, I think he was trying to attract "bears." "Religion" is like REM's "Comfortably Numb" -- overplayed and frankly boring as shit.

Roger Waters, meh. Vedder did his warbly thing, very Veddery.

Paul looked much better than he did on the Olympics and rocked. I also liked his selections.

"Cellphones in the air" silly, but she was trying.

And that would be if was up to actually executing it with any effectiveness, and he wasn't. If there's to be one song, maybe let him and Martin duet on "Everybody Hoits."

But let's face it, if Michael Stipe's stature stands for anything in this world, it's as a prophet of disaffection, and expecting such a figure to come out of his exile and achieve engagement in this sort of atmosphere is a fool's errand.

His ensemble, lumpiness, baldiness, throatiness, and especially his penchant for flailing his arms rather than touching the mic stand kept sending me into Joe Cocker flashbacks.

As if New York herself isn't represented by hip hop royalty. But people who really don't give a shit about what he does seem to bend over backwards to pretend they do. The cell phones bit with Alicia Keyes was the most annoying part of the show. People with cell phones on at concerts drive me crazy and she's encouraging it.

The Who: sludgy "Who Are You", weird "Bellboy", so-so "Pinball Wizard", so-so "Baba O'Riley", pretty good "Love Reign O'er Me" and then that last song which I guess was ok.

Kanye: Not my thing.

Billy Joel: I basically dislike him but I've seen him worse. At least the band was tight.

Chris Martin: Inoffensive, unmemborable.

Paul: Actually liked this better than most of the times I've seen him on TV. No "Hey Jude" or "Let It Be" which was nice. Let Me Roll It and I've Got a Feeling were inspired choices.

Is that "we live in?" I've always assumed it was "we're livin'."

That's how I've always known it. The lyrics sites (who, let's face it, mostly just copy each other) tend to agree.

The joke is that it doesn't storm much at all in England.

Enjoyed all but Kanye and Clapton.

DVR-ed it and watched this afternoon so I could fast forward through the artists I didn't care for (Jovi, Clapton, West).

Thoughts:

-G.E. Smith in Waters' band? Pretty cool.

-Underwhelmed by Vedder with Waters, but happy to see Roger still playing

-Ugh, Daltry...just, ugh

-ONLY THE GOOD DIE YOUNG? Bold at a hurricane relief benefit, but I liked it.

-I'm not a big Coldplay fan...at all. But I'm more impressed with Chris Martin as a musician today than I was yesterday.

-I loved, loved, loved Paul's band and set. Great selections, Paul. I don't normally see him except for things like this and when he went to the piano, I thought for sure we were getting HEY JUDE or LET IT BE, but 1985!?!? Sweet.

-The Nirvana thing turned out to be more hype than substance. I'm not entirely sure it was necessary.

I liked that Clapton played without hullabaloo. I need a drummer
with a small drum set and and a bass player ... because I'm Eric
Clapton.

I don't even like "1985," but my soul soared when he stared playing it because I knew that the "Hey Jude" handcuffs were off. Finding out that he could still play that lick and keep it going tightly through the song was pretty cool, though.

I think at some point today I've heard that each and every artist/group who played last night both sucked and was great.
Except maybe Kanye, nobody thought he was great.

Raised $30 million apparently, doesn't really seem like a lot, especially when Billy Crystal was throwing out two billion "if every person that is estimated to watch donates $1"....

Didn't draw as many eyes or dollars as they'd hoped? Perhaps they should have invited/courted people other than old white dudes playing music for old white dudes... and Kanye.

In retrospect-- with no country acts, no Latin acts, no ladies (or R&B acts) other than Alicia Keys (New Yorker Lady Gaga? Mary J. Blige? Mariah Carey? Adopted NYer Madonna?)-- this really does seem more and more like a missed opportunity.

Agreed across the board. I confess that I haven't made my donation yet. Sent a care package to my hometown for distribution, but I watched the (second half of the) concert, so I sure should pay for it.

"Cell phones in the air!" may be awkward to the ears of veteran concertgoers, but I imagine it's the new normal for Generation Smoking Ban. What Alicia probably didn't anticipate is that 57-year-old Pink Floyd fans can't hold their arms up that long.

$30 million is hardly chump change, and hopefully it will do a lot of good.

WTG to everyone who put this thing together on fairly short notice. WTG to the performers who donated their time and talent (whether we liked their acts or not, at least they were part of the solution and not part of the problem). WTG to others who adjusted their schedules for the show (one example - Jason Mraz moved his MSG concert from Tuesday to Monday in order to accommodate 12.12.12).

WTG everyone who donated, or who will get off of their duffs and donate.

Boo to everyone who was too busy, lazy or indifferent to help.

But I didn't get off my butt to do it. So there.

Maybe, but (and I don't know the answer to this) are they as willing to part with it if their favorite musician puts on a show and asks them to?

Granted. But it's not like including Jennifer Lopez* and Mary J for a New York Ladies segment would turn the show into something that alienated old-white-people; old white people-plus-[ignored segment of population X] gots $$-plus, right?

I'm not sure. For every J-Lo set you add you take away one Klassik Rawk King, and increase the chances I'll change the channel to watch Survivor. Concert promoters and radio programmers are like the same thing anymore, that they got away with this much integration was a bit of a risk, I'm sure they thought.

As an old white person who gots some $$, I was glad to be aimed at for a change, instead of the young, skinny hip crowd.

And we managed to watch Survivor, too :)

I'll refrain from boomer-ranting, and just say that I wish more people could have been as gratified/moved to donate as Coobs, and would that concert organizers worked a LITTLE smarter to make that happen.

I'm sure James Dolan has these artists on his iPod......IIRC it was mostly the same groups as the 9/11 concert minus Elton John....in fact when I saw the tubby fireman(maybe sanitation) all over Steve Buscemi I thought it was the same one form the 9/11 concert....remember him?, " Bin Laden, you can kiss my royal Irish ass".....

Re: In-121212-Concert-and-Discussion thread ...

One thing I've learned about the music industry is that most of today's radio hit acts (The Fray, Jason Mraz, Carly Rae Jepson) are deliberately formulated to appeal simultaneously to teen/tweens and their mothers --- the Twilight market. So maybe a few of those might disinterest Daddy (and I'm not knocking any of them), but the other family members might convince him to leave the concert on the TV until the big Foghat reunion. I'll also baselessly speculate that maybe the household donations are most often made by Mom.
