Seriously obtuse statements I've stumbled upon at Wikipedia ---

Article: "Back Door Santa":

It was also performed by Bon Jovi and released on the A Very Special Christmas compilation album produced to benefit the Special Olympics. For unknown reasons, "Back Door Santa" was replaced on later pressings of the first A Very Special Christmas with the song "I Wish Every Day Could Be Like Christmas" also performed by Bon Jovi.

I'm going to guess that early audiences might have gently told Eunice Shriver that a song celebrating yuletide anal sex was a jarring lead-in to "The Coventry Carol."

Article: "David Gates":

The group was signed by Elektra, where it would remain for the eight years of its existence. It released its first album, Bread, in 1969, which peaked at No. 127 on the Billboard 200. The first single, "Dismal Day," written by Gates, was released in June 1969 but did not sell well.

"Gates," I says to him, "I love and respect you, but put 'Dismal' on the B-side. Or save if for a later release. While I'm sure there are worse promotional decisions out there, let me assure you that nobody knows who the heck you are, and not a DJ in America wants to know why you're having a dismal day."

That first Very Special Christmas album is wonderful, but that Bon Jovi song is brutal. Amazingly dated.
