88 years old. Hospitalized repeatedly over the last month, in "guarded condition" fighting persistent fever, docs say.

It doesn't look too good for him. He was seeming pretty frail even before this.

The first sitting president that I was able to shake hands with. Met him again early in the 2000s. Very pleasant person. Hope he recovers.

Tough dude for a nerd. Shot down twice in World War II and lived to tell about it. I wouldn't bet against him.

Hadn't realized his term as CIA director lasted less than a full year. Even Porter Goss lasted longer than that.

It sounded earlier this week that it might almost be a survival race between Poppy Bush and Nelson Mandela. But Mandela was released from the hospital yesterday although I'm not sure that means he's out of the woods. One report I heard made it sound like it could be a let him go home to die in comfortable surroundings type of deal.

I always kind of liked him, because he reminded me of my dad

Re: George H.W. Bush

He was the commencement speaker for my graduation from William & Mary. Kept his remarks blessedly brief and jovial. He mentioned "a thousand points of light" and "a kinder, gentler" nation. Got cheers for slamming the NRA (he'd recently resigned from that terrorist-sponsoring organization). Then he told a joke about someone giving a long commencement address at Yale. And that was it. Not my favorite President by a long-shot, but it turned out to be a good graduation day speech.
