We have been staying away from social media announcements, but have been fairly loose-lipped so far while letting the rumor machine do it's thing. I thought I would share the news with you guys to keep me from exploding with excitement. Mrs. Monk and I are proudly expecting our first (and likely only) child. My wife is nearly 12 weeks along and is doing just fine. The due date is June 20th (NYM at Atlanta).

We are still about two months away from finding out the sex, but we have chosen to know because it would drive us crazy not to. My wife visited NYC over the Thanksgiving weekend and came back with a Mets bib/bootie/creeper set...the first of many Mets related items I plan to shower upon miniMonk.

We have lots to be excited about and thankful for right now. Being an expecting father has made me a nervous wreck (a feeling that I'm sure will last the rest of my life), but I'm also very proud and optimistic.

Freakin' Awesome.

Things I know about Monk:

1. He got divorced.

2. He had a stroke.

3. He quit smoking and got his body back into shape.

4. He and his wife are having a baby.

But somehow I missed the part where he re-married. Congrats on the baby and also belated congrats on getting re-married.

Many good things.

And more...

I have resigned my current position in the financial industry and am going to become the Operations Director with my mom-in-law's startup company that provides a subscription database of instrumentation manuals to hospitals. The business has taken off exponentially in the past 3 years (my mom-in-law's situation is the definition of the realization of the "American Dream", going from a second shift OR nurse to the co-owner of a very successful business). The plan is for me to take over her position in the company when she retires early in 2014. All the while, I get to work from home and watch the little one grow.

Things are very exciting right now.

Re: miniMonk

So, my little girl turned four months old last week. She is strong and animated and hasn't had the slightest hint of a fever or a sniffle in her life.

When she was born, the doctor needed to go in and bring her out with forceps because her heart rate kept dropping and it turned out that the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck. She came out with a shiner over her left eye and the hospital pediatricians all thought that the forceps caught her on the lid and that the swelling would eventually go down. She was and has been an otherwise healthy baby. But as the swelling went down, it became apparent that she had a ptosis in her left eye and we have seen several pediatric eye doctors to get recommendations on how best to remedy the situation.

Every one said that as long as the droopy lid was not effecting her vision, that any corrective surgery could be done when she is three or four. We have spent many hours patching her good eye (which she HATES) in an effort to strengthen the impaired eye, but she will typically shut down when the patch is on...which is a sign that she is no longer trying to use the impaired eye due to the fact that she cannot fully operate the lid. We were referred to a surgeon two weeks ago and he is going to perform a Frontalis Sling operation on her left eye this Friday morning. This is a fairly routine surgery where they use a silicone band to attach the lid to muscles near the brow which should greatly help her keep the eye open. With additional patching for the foreseeable future, she will strengthen the eye and learn how to use both of them together.

While the surgery is routine, fully anesthetizing a four month old infant is not. Had this surgery been for primarily cosmetic reasons, we would have waited, but every doctor we have seen has advocated for us to perform the surgery now before she stops using her left eye any further. I know there are parents here who have been through so much more with their own kids, but if anyone thinks about it on Friday morning, please send good thoughts Bianca's way. I know she is going to be just fine...but on Friday morning, I am going to be an absolute nervous wreck.

Re: miniMonk

She's precious TM!

My middle guy had surgery when he was five months old to remove a cyst from his throat. Again, while it's routine, I know your angst about fully anesthetizing an infant. But it sounds like she's in good hands and that they'll take good care of her.

The best of good vibes for a smooth day on Friday!

Re: miniMonk

Once it became clear that your daughter was no longer attempting to use the left eye, then it is best to have the ptosis fixed in order to avoid the development of amblyopia. Take heart in knowing that you and your wife are doing what is best for your daughter. I will keep both of you and your beautiful daughter in my prayers.

Re: miniMonk

Went through similar anxiety when Fboy was 15 months old and needed a general anesthetic to get ear tubes put in. As far as small children and surgery go that one is about as routine as it gets, and yet it was nerve wracking for Fwife and I.

Thoughts and prayers coming your way, sir.

Re: miniMonk

Bianca's operation went well his morning. The surgeon was able to determine that the muscle in question did not fully develop before she was born and the condition was not a result of the forceps extraction during birth. The little one is cranky and does not like the fact that she cannot rub at her stitches, but her mood should be back to normal within a few days.

The surgeon was honest and told us that because she is so young and has so much more developing and growing to do that this would most likely not be the last procedure that she would need for the issue as the tension on the sling may need to be adjusted as she gets older. But like Doc said above, this initial operation was necessary in order to prevent amblyopia, so we are glad that we were able to get it done and that there were no complications.

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and support. It really is appreciated.
