According to Uniwatch. I liked them.

Re: Mr. Met on the new batting practice caps

Very nice. Probably "inspired" by the fact the O's new cap was the 2nd best selling cap in the league last season. Either that or Jethro has been scouring MBTN for marketing ideas.

Edit: I see the Reds have followed suit.

Texas and Toronto = revolting.

If the side and back of the top are grey I've had that hat for over a year already. One of my favorite these days.

Mr. Met looks like he is running to God's waiting room on that thing.

Isn't the big guy usually depicted running right to left?

That's the direction he was heading on the cover of the 1975 scorecard. (My official source for Mr. Met action shots.)

Long live the Collins!

One could do worse than the Braves' screaming Indian. We don't know what he's screaming about. He's not nearly the caricature that the Cleveland guy is.

The tomahawk chop is another matter.

An astute observation. Traditionally this has been the case, however ever since they re-introduced the logo on playing apparel he's been flipped.

Don't make me go find that jewish chief wahoo picture from last time this came up.

Very surprised by the Braves' decision here though. The tomahawk itself would look fine and we don't need the chop.

I LOVE the Mets hat. Will definitely be buying one.

Orioles still have the best hat. There are some real boring ones that I can't imagine will inspire any sales too, like Cleveland.

"Squatchee" ... so that dot on the top of the hat that CF hates so much when it's the wrong color actually has a name?

All I'm saying is that Atlanta's screaming guy isn't as particularly demeaning as Cleveland's smiling guy.

Just as I think "Fighting Illini" isn't derogatory but a goofy wardancing mascot would be. I think it's important to look at this with some degree of nuance.

I didn't know the screaming guy had a name. If he shares the name Nok-a-homa with the wardancing mascot, then I certainly agree.

Re: Mr. Met on the new batting practice caps

I don't think "Braves" is as bad as "Indians" (And "Redskins" is a whole other thing.)

Indians brands an entire ethnic group, as the cartoon suggests. Braves seems like a role within the group.

That said, I wouldn't have resurrected that logo. Seems to invite trouble for no good reason, and, well, it wasn't that good of a logo the first time the team used it.

I love the Mr. Met cap, but I've yet to have a batting practice cap fit well. They are either way too loose, or the elastic gives me a headache. And it seems like they tend to be somewhere in the middle between a unstructured fashion cap and a traditional cap, looking kind of lumpy.

If this was shaped like a traditional game cap, I'd be into it.

They changed it I'm told. Will be more modeled after the 5950 instead of the 3530 or whatever it was called. i.e. the traditional game cap.

Screaming indian may not make it past the catalog page.

Word I’m hearing through the grapevine is that last week’s ESPN column on MLB’s new BP caps generated so much controversy and backlash against the Braves’ “screaming Indian” design that the team may end up switching to another cap logo. If that happens, expect MLB to issue lots of revisionist-history talking points about how the Indian design was just “one option we were exploring” and that it was “in development but never finalized” and that the Braves simply “opted to go in another direction” or some such. But take it from me: That design was (and, for now, still is) good to go. As of today, it’s listed in the MLB Style Guide. If the Braves ultimately abandon it, it’ll be because they responded to the backlash, period. Which, of course, is precisely what they should do. Here’s hoping.

Re: Mr. Met on the new batting practice caps

The apparent double standard is bullshit. This is not an issue which easily lends itself to partial acceptance or grandfathering; either deny the use of all Native American logos or keep schtum.

While Cleveland has spaced itself (somewhat) from Chief Wahoo, it still retains its use presumably because it is consistently one of the highest-selling caps. But the Braves cannot benefit from a less offensive logo, because....

If we continue on this logic, we're getting to the point where all humanoid nicknames are wrong. Maybe they are, but I think we're heading there when it's not necessarily where we intend to end up. Is it?

Terry Collins proves Jason's point.

No harm in the players wearing these for Spring Training games. They're delightful. They're whimsical. But leave the manager his dignity.

And shouldn't Mr. Met be wearing a tiny version of the Mr. Met logo on his cap?

No problem with the hat in any way they want to use it.

But this was probably just to show it off. Collins will probably more often wear the interview cap right?

Re: Mr. Met on the new batting practice caps

One of my first two or three specific memories of any kind is sitting on the floor of our dining room at the age of approximately 2 3/4 reading this magazine and being fascinated by how the trademark character was reading a magazine of himself/herself/itself reading a magazine of himself/herself/itself...and so on. When I made the Mr. Met cap suggestion, I was thinking of that some 47 1/2 years later.

Infinite regression indeed.

Re: Mr. Met on the new batting practice caps

In 1917, the US Government issued a Standing Liberty nickel, which showed Lady Liberty's bare breast. (This was two years before women were given the right to vote in the 19th Ammendment) There was such an outcry that the Mint changed the design and covered up the breast.
The company I work for sells that coin in uncirculated condition (so dirty old men can drool over the detail) for over $500.
And you didn't even have to fold the coin to see it.

Weren't we talking about bating practice caps?

I don't know if it's been mentioned anywhere, but I love, love, love the new MLB batting helmets. They bring back the old-school roundness that the Cool Flex model (or whatever they were called) lost.

I know they are for safety, but I dig the style much more.

I have a fondness for those old fashioned 60's style like they gave out on helmet day..Still have one faded as it is..with a Swoboda bat..The Mets only did a couple of bat days as I recall..
