1971 All-Star Game

Great photo essay (or vid cap essay) of the 1971 ASG, featuring Mets Hall-of-Famers Tom Seaver and Lindsey Nelson, plus future Met Doc Ellis inexplicably wearing a lefty batting helmet during a righthanded at-bat. (Doc was a switchie.)

How good? This good.

So, nobody followed that link? At all? Or did you follow it and find it wanting? Did I desperately oversell it?

I just checked it out, this is some serious time capsule stuff. Oh, the sideburns!

Did Schlitz taste as bad as Schaefer?

Warm, full, but with some sharp notes and a pleasing aftertaste... 1971 was apparently an excellent year for the 'burns. Also, the hat stylee-- I'm not positive, but I think Aparicio may be hiding a few spare balls and/or Venezuelan emigres in his high-rider.

A tremendous year for hands tucked in back. What's up with that?

I remember Rod Carew as being quite dapper. Seeing him with that big greasy chaw is fascinating and disturbing at the same time.

Nine months later, Willie looks a little worn from his 5,000 km trip (Photo featured on metsblog today).

Meanwhile I'm surprised to see the other Willie's middle-age spread started so early in his career.

Edit: the NL had 3 HoF Willies.
