He's probably a better player than we saw last year.

However much he outperforms or doesn't outperform his 2012 self, he's the most experienced knuckleball catcher in baseball. And as much as that experience came by luck, having a rare skill set has a value.

How surprising that the Jays wanted Nickeas also.

I won't go so far as to write that I wish he were here, but get a load of this:

excerpt

PEORIA, Ariz. -- A relaxed Jason Bay ripped a two-run home run in his first at-bat with the Mariners on Saturday and said he feels he's rediscovered the swing that eluded him the past few years with the Mets.

Bay, 34, is attempting to crack the Mariners' roster after signing a one-year, $1 million deal this offseason. Bay was released by the Mets with $22 million still owed on his previous contract after hitting .165 with eight home runs and 20 RBIs in 70 games in 2012.

The left fielder homered and walked twice in three plate appearances in Saturday's 8-6 victory over the Padres, taking Tyson Ross deep on a fastball on the second pitch he saw this spring.

Asked if he'd shortened his swing, Bay said he's just finally regained the feeling he had at the plate earlier in his career before his struggles began. "I don't think I've shortened it. I've kind of re-found it," Bay said....

Re: Wish You Were Here: Continuing Careers of Ex Mets - 2013

From my dad who is Craig's frequent golfing partner:

A pretty remarkable event occurred on the golf course at the Borrego Springs Resort and Spa on March 1st, 2013.

A long time resident of our community was playing the complicated and unnerving game of golf with his friends. This man is known by many of us not only here but throughout our nation. He has been the recipient of five World Series rings, yes five, all from different teams he has had occasion to represent either as manager, coach or player. A singularly impressive achievement. He started his career in baseball as a Brooklyn Dodger.

This past Friday he received a brand new Taylor Made 4 iron he ordered from John Dickman, the Golf Pro at the resort. At the par 3 177 yard 12th hole he was about to use his 5 wood but was cajoled into using his brand new never used Taylor Made 4 iron. He addressed the ball and with his 83 years of experience stroked the ball and sent it on its way. His three playing friends watched as the ball descended on the green and bounced high as it headed toward the flag. From 177 yards they could see the ball as ut stopped seemingly near the flag. Too bad, almost a hole in one, a great achievement for any golfer. Oh well next time maybe.

Upon approaching the green the players noticed the ball was visible right next to the flag. When they got even closer they saw that it was leaning on the flag and when the golfer removed the flag according to the rules of golf, all heard that lovely rattle as it fell into the hole. A fabulous hole in one. The golfer is Roger Craig, the 4iron is Taylor Made and it was used only once. It is now in the process of being mounted as Roger now awaits the delivery of a new Taylor Made 4 iron.

Diamondbacks release Rod Barajas.

Rod may no longer be a Diamondback, but he's sure as shootin' an American citizen, Arizona authorities be damned.

This spring, the union sent an advisory to players, in English and Spanish, about SB 1070. Lino Diaz, who until last year was Cleveland's cultural development coordinator, says the Indians once brought in Phoenix police officers to explain the law. "We felt like it had more weight that way," Diaz says. "The players were overwhelmed with the things that could get them in trouble, which are obviously a little different than the things in their countries."

Players who once pummeled SB 1070 sound resigned. "There's really not much we can do about it," Gallardo says after throwing four innings against the Diamondbacks. "The law is the law."

"It's the government," says Torrealba. "You follow the rules, I guess."

"Tell those ballplayers, don't worry, I always have an open door," says Sheriff Joe.

Late one afternoon, I find Barajas sitting in the Diamondbacks clubhouse in Scottsdale. Barajas is a big, burly catcher who looks like he could smite a base stealer with his eyes. "You said you couldn't imagine your grandparents being asked for their papers," he tells me. "Well, I wouldn't want to see my parents in that situation, either."

To a police officer, Barajas could arouse the same "reasonable suspicion" as Elian Herrera. Barajas's parents are Mexican immigrants; his skin is olive-colored. But he was born in Ontario, California. He's as American as Mike Trout. I ask Barajas if he is ever worried about being asked for his papers.

"I don't know if I should carry my birth certificate or passport. I never thought about it," he says. "I'm sure it could happen."

Then Barajas's eyes narrow. "I think of myself as an American citizen. There's no reason whatsoever for me to have to carry that around."

Fron CBS New York:
SportsNet New York, better known as SNY, announced on Thursday that it has hired Valentine as an analyst for the Mets’ pre- and postgame shows before and after game telecasts.

He will make his debut on Monday — Opening Day — at 11:30 a.m., appearing on “Mets First Pitch.” Valentine will be teamed with former Met and lead analyst Bob Ojeda and host Chris Carlin.

“We are extremely pleased to add Bobby Valentine as the newest member of our Mets broadcast team,” Curt Gowdy, Jr., the senior vice president and executive producer of SNY, said in a statement. “As a former Mets Manager, Bobby brings an insightful and contemporary perspective to our studio coverage. In addition, his in-depth knowledge, candor and passion for the game of baseball will be a perfect complement to our award-winning Mets coverage.”

Valentine will appear roughly 12-15 times throughout the 2013 season, SNY announced in a press release.

“I’m excited to join SNY’s Mets coverage, which is regarded as one of the best in all of baseball,” Valentine said in a statement. “After spending the better part of four decades with the team, I am looking forward to working with Bobby, Keith (Hernandez), Ronnie (Darling) and the rest of the Mets’ on-air team starting with Opening Day.”

R.A. got a severe Dickeying at the hands of the Mariners yesterday, allowing seven earned in six innings and getting booed off the mound by a bunch of poutine-eating socialists who couldn't get Leafs tickets. He's now 2-5 with a 5.36 ERA for the season, and is complaining of neck and back issues. The Jays are 10-21 after a winter spent throwing around a lot of money, and R.A. has called his team 'dysfunctional,' which must be going over real well in the front office. Reyes is, of course, out for quite a while, and the starting lineup yesterday featured one hitter with an average over .247 and no one slugging over .500. The Mets, for the sake of contrast, have three starters slugging over .500. Yikes!

Lots of ex-Mets in this one. Kelly Shoppach and Henry Blanco were the catchers, Endy Chavez played LF for Seattle, and Oliver Perez pitched a scoreless ninth for the Mariners, dropping his ERA to a mere 0.73.

Re: Wish You Were Here: Continuing Careers of Ex Mets - 2013

Doing some comparisons:

Ryan Church gave the Mets 2.0 WAR, worth, according to FanGraphs, $9.3 million, while being paid about $3.4 million. Yay!

The Schneid gave us 1.1 WAR, worth $5.9 mills, while collecting $9.8 million. Boo!

So, between those twos, the Mets got $15.2 million worth of baseballin' for $13.2. A modest bargain. Nothing to brag about.

If you count Churchie's subsequent struggles after being moved to the Braves and Pirates, the trade certainly looks worse. It's a philosophical puzzle whether that should count or Francouer's solid 2009 or terrible 2010 should be included or none of that.

Milledge gave the Nats 0.0 WAR over a season and a half (similar tenure to Churchie) and accrued about 0.0 WAR, worth about $0. The Nationals paid about $625,000 in salary for the privilege. He achieved some modest redemption with the (again) Pirates, so following the players of this deal to the end of their contracts, rather than their tenures with the teams involved, would probably make it look close to even. But then the Church-for-Francouer trade would be the real steal for the Mets, though I imagine few of us celebrate that day.

I'm virtually certain (regarding the concussion).

Church was a Christian (an appropriately named one) who (for a time, anyhow) gave voice to the Jesus-is-the-only-way-to-salvation perspective. Not exactly an attack on the Semitic race, but certainly a rankling (or worse) comment to some.

I think he apologized or something.

Here's the quote:

An article in Sunday's paper about Baseball Chapel quoted Church as saying that he had turned to Moeller for advice about his former girlfriend, who was Jewish. "I said, like, Jewish people, they don't believe in Jesus. Does that mean they're doomed? Jon nodded, like, that's what it meant. My ex-girlfriend! I was like, man, if they only knew. Other religions don't know any better. It's up to us to spread the word," Church said.

Carlos Beltran's former NY home for sale.

Carlos Beltran's House Now an Affordable $5 Million After Price Slash
By Gabe Zaldivar (Pop Culture Lead Writer) on June 13, 2013

St. Louis Cardinals fans moving to the New York area are in luck, because I hear Carlos Beltran's house is on sale for the rock-bottom price of $5 million.

Busted Coverage spotted the recent listing over at Zillow that has some amazing photos of Beltran's former home in Sands Point, N.Y.

Zillow has a bunch of information that should have a great deal of you house hunters breaking your piggy banks this weekend.

It was originally listed for sale back in February of 2012 for $5,800,000, but was recently reduced in price to $4,995,000, giving Beltran two steals on the season.

Here is a brief breakdown of some of the images.

Mets fans will either rejoice or run at the sight of Beltran back in a Mets uniform. Either way, we are assuming the house comes with the painting.

At least, that's how we might roll if we are negotiating.

I am just happy with my regular couch and TV, so what do I know?

Zillow provides more on the seven-bedroom house that also features eight bathrooms:

This One Of A Kind South Hampton Colonial Style Home Consists Of The Finest Quality Craftsmanship And Design.Gourmet Eik With Custom Cabinetry,Bright And Spacious Great Room,Formal Lr/Dr,Study/Office,Pool,Privategated Courtyard,Huge Property.

Beltran is off to a great start to the season, so he is feeling generous. Get in while the getting is good with a great price on a massive property.

Well, just make sure he throws in that painting.

Josh Thole: now a major league first baseman, just not a very good one.

Boston’s turnaround rolled on with a 5-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday. There were smiles in the clubhouse but hardly a sense of satisfaction.

“With 50 wins, people are going to keep talking about that. It’s not enough,” Shane Victorino said. “We’ve got to keep going.”

His hard grounder eluded first baseman Josh Thole for an error as Jonathan Diaz raced home with the winning run in the ninth inning. Thole entered in the bottom of the third when Adam Lind left with mid-back tightness and Thole was playing first base for just the second time in 316 major league games.
“You’ve just got to know who to hit it to, I guess,” Victorino said with a smile. “I played against Josh all those years in New York and he was a catcher.”

Thole, acquired from the New York Mets along with pitcher R.A. Dickey in December, had played first at Triple-A Buffalo before he was called up on June 7.

“I’ve played first base. That’s what I’m here for,” he said. “I’ve got to catch the ball and make an out.”

Jose Bautista tied the game in the ninth against Koji Uehara (1-0) with a solo homer, his 19th of the season and third in two games. On the previous at-bat, Victorino made a sliding catch near the right-field line on Jose Reyes’ fly ball.

As you may have inferrred from the above, Victorino is still an a-hole.

Reyes homered in the Jays' loss.

If we are really interested in punishing Tejada we could use RC as Quintanilla's backup, and additional depth in the event we swap out Muffy and start playing Flores in the infield, as suggesting in another thread.

That said the Mets'd prolly give that role to Tyrna first.

Re: Wish You Were Here: Continuing Careers of Ex Mets - 2013

1. Well, maybe that's the plan, to only use him in emergency situations until Tejada finds his way back.

2. It's perhaps the same old story. The managerial pool is disproportionately composed of plucky infielders, often with marginal skills (like Terry). They tend to fall in love with/over-rate the value of plucky infielders, often with marginal skills. They are subconsciously redeeming their own careers.

It seems like Willie (who was hardly marginal as a player, but seemed to have insecurities of his own) had four secondbasemen on his bench at any given time. If he needed them to pinch-hit or play shortstop, outfield, first or catcher, he was confident they could, because they were part of his part of his plucky breed.

it goes beyond that, of course, defensive catchers who were managers can become enamored of defensive catchers. Tony Muser, when he was with the Royals, seemed to always have a defensive firstbaseman, because (I speculate) all he could do in his brief major league career was competently catch the ball at first.

And they all batted second. Hadda bat second. Because Willie batted second. Willie Randolph confirmed what another second baseman of his era -- a greater second baseman than Willie Randolph -- already proved -- that you can be a heckuva baseball player and be a total moron about it at the same time.

He thought there was nothing wrong with secretaries earning $45K a year, with no other source of income or cash other than their $45K annual salary to be able to buy $750K homes on the honor system, without having to go through a rigorous financial background check. He still doesn't understand what the hell happened. He listens to the most Nazified right wing nutjobs out there, hearing what he wants to hear until he's worked out some crazy theory blaming the whole downfall on Pres. Obama. He thinks that the solution to all his problems is to have a Republican President in the White House because with a Republican President in charge, the real estate market would return to 2004-2007 levels in a couple of weeks.

Mariano Rivera. Klapisch will no doubt soon call for the DH to be eliminated for the Yankees so the Immaculate Mariano can bat and be honored by the fans with soft rain cheers FOUR times during a game and not just the one time as he walks in from the bullpen.

Oh, and any pitch Mariano makes contact with shall be deemed a ground rule home run because fans don't want to see a proud reliever flailing away at the plate. (Then again, in that bandbox...) The Greatest Reliever Ever needs to hear the cheers as he rounds the bases. It's good for the sport.

I didn't watch the entire game obviously so I don't know whether Kerwin Dantley had a wide strike zone all night, but he certainly did not when Joe Nathan was walking Vernon Wells to start the Yanx rally in the top of the 9th but suddenly did when something named Leonys Martin was PH-ing in the bottom of the inning. Poor dude never had a chance as he K'd looking on four pitches, not one of which was in the strike zone.

Strom and Bob Rauch buried the Mets at 0-8 on that Saturday night at the Astrodome yet Yogi's yoinkers yoinked it back to win it, 11-8.

Other memory of Stearns in 2000 postseason, besides The Monster (a beautiful coinage, I thought), was not of his doing. In the bitchiness that ensued from Piazza-Clemens II, Michael Kay, who was doing a postgame shows on MSG with Howie Rose, insisted in his meatheaded way that the Mets needed to fight once the bat fragment was thrown. And since Piazza was too valuable to get himself ejected, "John Stearns should've taken a swing at Clemens."
