What Can Brown Do for Me?

Las Vegas continues their heartless raid on the Colorado Springs outfield, as Andrew Brown joins Jamie Hoffman among 2012 Rockies outfield bubble guys signed to minor league deals by the 2013 Mets.

Looks kinda short:

If this is the guy I'm thinking about, he was once a highly rated Cards prospect.
Can't hurt.
If you look in enough oysters, you might find a pearl.

Bats right, throws right, plays right.

Guy can slug.

Was originally with the Cardinal org, but was an 18th round pick who didn't make his pro debut until age 22, has had some good though hardly outstanding seasons in the minors, has never seen a BA Top-100 lists, and is 28 y/o at this point - so either you're thinking of a different Brown or you're mis-remembering (as Rajah would say) his one-time prospect status.

You always have to take the 2012 Colorado Springs stats with a grain of salt, but the 2011 stats at AAA Memphis are in a similar neighborhood.

No reason not to give him a look.

Granted, Colorado Springs is a whole different level of grade-inflation... but Memphis is still a PCL outpost. The AA and lower rate stats look similar... but he was over-age-- if slightly-- at each level.

Never mind that, though-- I'll take an army of Baxters going Thunderdome on each other for a roster spot before shelling out three years for Ross, who's the same player 5 years down the road.

Paul DePodesta wants you to know Newest Met Andrew Brown is a career 321/414/612 against left-handers in the upper minors.

".612!"

And those Colorado Springs numbers equate to .252/.323/.461 at the major-league level (with the Memphis ones being equal to .244/.322/.409).

So, basically... Hairston-lite minus speed?

Three other Browns played 69 games for the Mets -- Leon ("Motor"), 64, 1976; Kevin ("Not That One"), 2, 1990; and Emil (who passed Luis Castillo on the basepaths in Washington one Saturday night), 3, 2009.

It's all waiting for you, Andrew.

Re: What Can Brown Do for Me?

If he can put up numbers in the majors similar to those he's put up in the minors (far from certain, I know) then he could turn out to be a good find.

More likely he'll just be another guy in the mix, but it can't hurt to give him a shot.

Or so said baseball as it looked the other way in the late '90s to its ever-lasting detriment, according to Bob Costas.

Re: What Can Brown Do for Me?

The guy has shown the ability to slug.

Let him prove he is not Mike Jacobs.

Nick Evans is still bouncing around and almost out of baseball..I would offer him a minor league deal. Line them up and catch lightning i seez.
