Don't you have to be a slugger to wear 44?

Re: Put a number on it.

The odd freaky pitcher gets it too. Isringhausen is the best example in Metdom, but David Cone and Ron Darling also passed through. On either side of the ball, donning it can be seen as a statement of intent to dominate. You can't hide in 44.

The most representative 44s for the Mets in recent years have been AAAAs --- Ambitous Athletic African American outfielders: Ryan Thompson, Jay Payton, Mike Cameron, Lastings Milledge.

Jason Bay was clearly disappointing (to say the least) but the dumbest 44 assignments in recent years have to be Jay Bell and Tim Redding. Tony Armas at least was the son of a AAAA, and even Eddie Kunz at least had a few ounces of Hollywood in his sideburns. Bell and Redding darkened the uniform and were absolute 44 pretenders from day one.

4: BG (Germen, d'Arnaud, Recker, Hoffmann)
3: LWFS (Germen, Recker, Den Dekker)
2: SeaWolf (Bixler, Centeno)

Re: Put a number on it.

Every year, I think about this a lot, and every year, I think I more or less have everybody in place, and every year, am disappointed to realize I have everything utterly and completely wrong. Going with my guesses in the roster thread, the only guy I got right was Anthony Recker in 20. Now I have to seriously update over there. Josh Satin and Omar Quintanilla should have been layups, but no! Damn you, new equipment manager guy.

Congratulations to Ben Grimm. I don't know how the heck he got Jamie Hoffman in 80. Spring usually has poor sadsacks dressed in the 60s and 70s, but the only guys I think of getting wide receiver numbers are guys who weren't initially invited to camp, but get to float up for one day near the end of camp to round out a travel roster. Dylan Owen --- there's a guy who'd look good in an 80-89 jersey. Travis Ozga and Mark Cohoon, too.
