White Sox bringing back Seaver-era uniforms this year!

Last year the White Sox saluted the 1972 team with throwbacks, this year the team is honoring the 1983 team by wearing those funky uniforms that people either love or hate. I think they're kind of fun, but I always associate them with Seaver's 300th win. The new versions will have belts, but otherwise the same.

Re: White Sox bringing back Seaver-era uniforms this year!

To me, they just don't have a major league feel to them. They look like they belong to the visitors at a Long Island Ducks game.

Re: White Sox bringing back Seaver-era uniforms this year!

The only positives I associate with them are:

A) The Seaver win
B) Britt Burns (who reminded me of my mom's/aunt's accountant, only in a weird shirt and baseball glove)
C) They remind me of, like, five sets of long-sleeve pajamas I had when I was 5-7 years old, an age I enjoyed

Of all the noise in that contest, top number three in the second photo is a sweet appalachian fiddle line.

Funny how everybody is #39. Is that historically the number folks use for prototypes?

If a "Dennis Lamp era" Blue Jays uniform had remained on Dennis Lamp, there'd be no Seaver Era White Sox look.

That would be Dennis "Bleeping" Lamp in my household.

Seaver looks so good in that uniform, even if it's the wrong uniform. He could've gone on a goodwill tour and pitched one game for every team in the majors (save one) just to class up all the non-Mets uniforms out there -- and to treat the fans of those teams to perfect pitching form.

Nice to see Comiskey in the background as well. Those yellow dividers among the box seats were distinctive.

I'm trying to figure out who those Sox are in that picture, and I can't get a single one. Bob James? Kevin Hickey?

I keep seeing half of those prototypes as Astros uniforms, and the guy second from right as Joe Niekro. Over on the left it looks like Jeff Reardon and Craig Swan happened to drop by. Or Gene Garber and Dave Stieb. A lot of guys back then looked like that.

Short guy, third from left, is definitely Julio Cruz, which puts this picture 1983-1986.

The story makes clear the contest etc took place during the 1981 season.

Bill Almon is eligible as a 1981er.

I think cheesy mustache second from the left is LaMarr Hoyt.

Re: White Sox bringing back Seaver-era uniforms this year!

Could those guys be ushers or something? I just looked at photos of everyone who played for the White Sox in 1981, and I didn't see any matches. Todd Cruz is actually possible--he was on injury rehab for the Sox most of the year, and he could have been at the ball park that day. But the guy in the picture is really short, and Cruz was listed at 6 feet. And the guy second from left looks a little like Kevin Hickey, but his hair's not long enough.

The guy on the left looks too short and not redneck enough to be Lamarr Hoyt. And I don't think Hoyt had a beard yet.

That's definitely NOT Almon, who had a much longer/skinnier face, and that definitely IS Cruz, who was a Mariner in 1981. Odd.

Cruz was with the White Sox in 1981, though he didn't play. He was on injury rehab and in Triple A.

That's why I'm going for second from the left with Hoyt.

I had half a notion that the guy on the right was LaRussa, but TLR was wearing his hair shaggy back then.

Then why does B-R say he spent the season in Seattle and didn't get dealt to the Sox until 1983? I'm thinking this picture has to be mid-80s. And that guy on the left I know I recognize, but I can't place him.

Found the UniWatch article with this story, and now I'm even more confused, because this places it in 1981. So maybe that isn't Cruz.

Baseball Reference says:

June 12, 1980: Traded by the California Angels to the Chicago White Sox for Randy Scarbery.
December 11, 1981: Traded by the Chicago White Sox with Rod Allen and Jim Essian to the Seattle Mariners for Tom Paciorek.

He did not play in the major leagues in 1981. He played in 8 games for Edmonton, the White Sox AAA affiliate (just long enough to get himself arrested for shoplifting from an Edmonton store).

Or take a pass on a played-out attraction and do something original for a sideshow. Ice fishing or rhythm gymnastics. Give two kids remote controls to operate giant Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots

You know what would be fun? A name-that-Met contest. Do they ever do that? Put a big ol' baseball card on the scoreboard and redact the name and position. Start with a Mets Hall of Famer, or an obvious contemporary figure and then get more and more obscure. Topps could sponsor it.

they do that all the time. Maybe not the last year or two, although I remember Mike Nickeas' little league card.

I'd like to see the team adopt a house band that sits in the outfield seats with their guitars, bass, drums, etc. and plays rally a versatile set of music that's relevant to the game as well as establishing some in-game standards that resonate with the crowd.

That one they had of Jason Bay was no fun at all-- nothing but an empty shell that looks like the guy? I mean, come on, promotions department.
