To me, they just don't have a major league feel to them. They look like they belong to the visitors at a Long Island Ducks game.

The only positives I associate with them are:

Do White Sox fans think of it as the "Seaver Era"?

At least they aren't shorts...

The things I like about it are the numbers on the thigh and... that's it.

Well, they should!

Great UniWatch reportage on these White Sox unis, here and here.

If a "Dennis Lamp era" Blue Jays uniform had remained on Dennis Lamp, there'd be no Seaver Era White Sox look.

That would be Dennis "Bleeping" Lamp in my household.

G-Fafif Jan 21 2013 08:01 AM Re: White Sox bringing back Seaver-era uniforms this year! |
Seaver looks so good in that uniform, even if it's the wrong uniform. He could've gone on a goodwill tour and pitched one game for every team in the majors (save one) just to class up all the non-Mets uniforms out there -- and to treat the fans of those teams to perfect pitching form.

I'm trying to figure out who those Sox are in that picture, and I can't get a single one. Bob James? Kevin Hickey?

I keep seeing half of those prototypes as Astros uniforms, and the guy second from right as Joe Niekro. Over on the left it looks like Jeff Reardon and Craig Swan happened to drop by. Or Gene Garber and Dave Stieb. A lot of guys back then looked like that.

Edgy MD Jan 21 2013 06:19 PM Re: White Sox bringing back Seaver-era uniforms this year! |
Bill Almon, far right?
|
seawolf17 Jan 21 2013 06:48 PM Re: White Sox bringing back Seaver-era uniforms this year! |
I thought the second from right was one of the Forsch brothers, but neither of them was ever a Sock.
|
seawolf17 Jan 21 2013 06:52 PM Re: White Sox bringing back Seaver-era uniforms this year! |
Short guy, third from left, is definitely Julio Cruz, which puts this picture 1983-1986.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Jan 21 2013 07:35 PM Re: White Sox bringing back Seaver-era uniforms this year! |
The story makes clear the contest etc took place during the 1981 season.
|
Edgy MD Jan 21 2013 07:51 PM Re: White Sox bringing back Seaver-era uniforms this year! |
Bill Almon is eligible as a 1981er.
|
dinosaur jesus Jan 21 2013 09:34 PM Re: White Sox bringing back Seaver-era uniforms this year! |
Could those guys be ushers or something? I just looked at photos of everyone who played for the White Sox in 1981, and I didn't see any matches. Todd Cruz is actually possible--he was on injury rehab for the Sox most of the year, and he could have been at the ball park that day. But the guy in the picture is really short, and Cruz was listed at 6 feet. And the guy second from left looks a little like Kevin Hickey, but his hair's not long enough.
|
seawolf17 Jan 22 2013 06:06 AM Re: White Sox bringing back Seaver-era uniforms this year! |

That's definitely NOT Almon, who had a much longer/skinnier face, and that definitely IS Cruz, who was a Mariner in 1981. Odd.

Cruz was with the White Sox in 1981, though he didn't play. He was on injury rehab and in Triple A.

That's why I'm going for second from the left with Hoyt. I had half a notion that the guy on the right was LaRussa, but TLR was wearing his hair shaggy back then.

Then why does B-R say he spent the season in Seattle and didn't get dealt to the Sox until 1983? I'm thinking this picture has to be mid-80s. And that guy on the left I know I recognize, but I can't place him.
|
seawolf17 Jan 22 2013 09:09 AM Re: White Sox bringing back Seaver-era uniforms this year! |
Found the UniWatch article with this story, and now I'm even more confused, because this places it in 1981. So maybe that isn't Cruz.

Baseball Reference says: June 12, 1980: Traded by the California Angels to the Chicago White Sox for Randy Scarbery. December 11, 1981: Traded by the Chicago White Sox with Rod Allen and Jim Essian to the Seattle Mariners for Tom Paciorek. He did not play in the major leagues in 1981. He played in 8 games for Edmonton, the White Sox AAA affiliate (just long enough to get himself arrested for shoplifting from an Edmonton store).

Yeah, I got myself confused from the beginning and just kept pushing it. It's one of those deals where you know that people always mix the two of them up--when they say Todd they mean Julio, and vice versa. So when you said Julio, I thought of course you meant Todd. Sorry about that.
|
Edgy MD Jan 22 2013 10:17 AM Re: White Sox bringing back Seaver-era uniforms this year! |
Cruzes are like that --- always letting on that they're somebody else. Here's Heity (sp.?) Cruz trying his damnedest to add a few years to his career by pretending he's Juan Berenguer.

Perfect. Get it so at the start they're arranged on the field to look like the Mets logo.

Or take a pass on a played-out attraction and do something original for a sideshow. Ice fishing or rhythm gymnastics. Give two kids remote controls to operate giant Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots

they do that all the time. Maybe not the last year or two, although I remember Mike Nickeas' little league card.

Mets – Willets Point Jan 25 2013 09:19 AM Re: White Sox bringing back Seaver-era uniforms this year! |
I'd like to see the team adopt a house band that sits in the outfield seats with their guitars, bass, drums, etc. and plays rally a versatile set of music that's relevant to the game as well as establishing some in-game standards that resonate with the crowd.

I had fun with this before, and came up with an idea that pays tribute to Shea: Cats! (Or people in cats costumes) They can have cool Metsie names.

Updated from the blog: The way I see it, we could have giant mascot cats, each named after a beloved Mets player of the past. You’d have Mookie running against Choo-Choo, Casey, Rusty, Tug and Mikey.

They tried something similar, by having giant caricatures of Chris Young and Mike Pelfrey pitch every fifth day parts of the last couple of years. It didn't stir much excitement.

That one they had of Jason Bay was no fun at all-- nothing but an empty shell that looks like the guy? I mean, come on, promotions department.
