Nothing like a nice big buttery bowl of popcorn for supper. Unless you use the wrong snowman shaker and sprinkle a ton of pepper on it instead of salt because you have the light turned off so you can watch a DVD.
Yuck.

minimm really likes to get a bottle of v8 fusion when we go to the bagel store on weekday mornings.

Best wishes indeed. Lupus is one of those diseases that sounds like it shouldn't exist any more, like scurvy or the gout. But my MIL has it as well.

I spent five and a half years working at the Pathmark in Commack; I'm still very particular about my bags. I LOVE the self-scanners now.

Re: Apropos of Nothing in 2013

Peter David, Mets fan and author of the "Sir Apropos of Nothing" humorous fantasy series, suffered a stroke on December 30.

David also wrote several Star Trek novels, movie novelizations (including several Star Trek), and TV novelizations (Babylon 5.

He's probably better known for his comic book writing. He took over The Incredible Hulk in the 90s, when its sales were anemic, and turned it into a must-read book. His conception of the Hulk with Bruce Banner's intelligence was a part of the success, as was his writing (In one episode, Rick Jones was getting married and a bunch of supervillains showed up at the ceremony, hurt that they weren't invited. A true was declared, and they stayed). He won an Eisner Award (comic books' Oscar) for it.

He also wrote Spider-Man and was given the assignment to write the death of Aunt May (the first, I think), where he revealed why Aunt May hated Spider-Man so much -- she knew it was Peter from the start and didn't like him getting in danger. He's written for both Marvel and DC, and was author of the "But I Digress . . . " column in The Comic Buyers Guide and is legendary in comic book circles for his debate with Todd McFarlane (it was over Peter's criticism of McFarlane's Spawn), where he utterly destroyed McFarlane.

He also wrote a couple of Babylon 5 episodes, and wrote and created Space Cases for Nickelodeon.

If you want to help, buy his books. Here's a list of those that will help him the most.

It obviously doesn't matter the same way in school, but I always wonder if someone did a study on flu-related absences from work if they'd find a company with unlimited sick days loses less man-hours overall to the flu because people actually sick stay home rather than contaminating the office. Similarly on 'work from home' policies.

Was just exchanging an xmas gift for Wifey at the "Joe Fresh" store (Cheap Chic-Canadian Style) when I realized I walked into a shooting of the "What Not To Wear' show. At first I thought they were just shooting catalog photos or something but I noticed one person getting made up, it was Stacy London, who I kinda always had a thing for even though you can tell she's got an awful mean streak and we'd be terrible for each other. But still. I gave her a big dumb smile expecting she'd recognize me as I did her but aside from probably secretly admiring my handsomeness and smart dress and wishing I'd go up to her and ask her out, she didn't say anything. I sat back and watched her and Clinton tear into a shlumpy mom.

Given my endless quest to lose weight, I don't eat that much fast food, but enjoy my Wendy's/BK/McDonalds/etc chicken sandwiches and the like.

But these sandwich shop fast food places..I dunno. Every couple of years I seem to try them, and I'm almost always disapointed. I was okay with Quizno's when it first showed up for a while, probably because they had more hot options, but bleh. I've heard good things about WaWa and Quick Chek, but haven't been tempted to try them. Now Wegmans...Wegmans is awesome. Great bread, tasty ingredients..

They've got Papa John's and Dominos here too..I don't get it. I can understand how tourists want to go to Olive Garden in Times Square. certainly not everyone's into food and plenty eat just because that's what you have to do and would rather stick with familiar, but pizza is just pizza..and it's obviously not tourists keeping these places open

Fortunately, our local police department is active on social media sites, and gave us the added information that there was a "suspicious" couple on the grounds near the school, so the lockdown is precautionary while they search for the couple.

Multiple people stabbed in downtown Baltimore, police say
Injuries said to be not life threatening
By Carrie Wells, The Baltimore Sun
3:11 p.m. EST, February 5, 2013

Multiple people were stabbed in downtown Baltimore Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Baltimore police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said he did not yet have information on how many victims were stabbed, but said they all had injuries that were not life-threatening. The stabbing occurred at about 1:40 p.m. near the intersection of North Howard Street and West Fayette Street, he said.

Large crowds had gathered downtown around the time of the stabbing for a parade starting at City Hall and ending at M&T Bank Stadium to celebrate the Baltimore Ravens' Super Bowl XLVII victory.

"It doesn't appear at this point that it's connected to the Ravens parade," Guglielmi said.

Fortunately, our local police department is active on social media sites, and gave us the added information that there was a "suspicious" couple on the grounds near the school, so the lockdown is precautionary while they search for the couple.

I'm not thrilled. But thanks to our police department at least I'm not on the verge of hysterics.

Subject LockDown!

Good Afternoon,

I just wanted to inform you all that we had a LOCKDOWN Drill today, which was different than in the past. All of the children were asked to get out of their seats and sit on the floor in an area far away from the door and windows.
Some of the children were nervous about the drill.
I did not like doing this drill but it is necessary.
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact to me.
Sincerely,

Deteriorating sixties counterculture at play there. Love was the over-riding value, and then somehow, in the midst of the revolution's chaos, it mutated into "fun." Perfect and unrestrained freedom leads, or so David Brooks argues in today's New York Times, to society's members growing "inward and becom[ing] self-absorbed. Society will become atomized. You’ll end up with more loneliness and less community."

I don't know, but "She's Leaving Home" certainly doesn't make me very happy. And the hippie dream of liberation from our bourgeois parents and the ties of their bourgeois values and obligations... isn't exactly getting the strongest sell from the Beatles there.

This was one of those things that just came out of left field.

I was getting my hair cut this afternoon. My hair stylist is a divorced mother of one, a freshman at Rutgers. So I naturally asked her how her son was doing.

She told me that this was her first day back at work in three weeks, because three weeks ago her son had been found dead in his dorm room. Apparently due to an accidental overdose.

I'm just kicked in the gut over this. I know that this woman had really devoted herself to this boy, and was happy that he was in college, etc.

There's nothing that one can really say or do - I told her I was sorry and gave her a hug. But nothing makes this better. And the thought of it just shakes the pit of my core....

Wow, a Gremlin. I haven't seen one in ages. I did see a Pacer some months ago in a shopping center parking lot in Islandia. My wife's family had one, and I drove it a few times. It felt like being inside a hamster ball.

Somebody who must work at a shopping center in Commack where I often go for lunch drives a blue Ford Maverick, which was my first car. I see it there a lot. Mine was a '71, also in blue. They really built some crap back in those days.

What would be the points for that argument? The pro-DH argument is that high-paid players can extend their careers and continue receiving high pay as their defensive skills erode (or were never that great to begin with).

The point would be that there's another argument that the absence of the DH perhaps benefits more of their members to greater degree. And if they claim to represent the interests of all of their members, they might be better served by the absence of the DH.

Edgy MD
May 09 2013 10:27 AM
Re: Apropos of Nothing in 2013

Now that we have 15 teams in each league (creating a new DH job!) we can begin comparing data about which "rule" is producing higher salaries for the players on the team. It's much harder measurement than I can or will be willing to attempt here --- accounting for variables like market size, how many teams in each league are making an aggressive run vs. rebuilding, etc. --- but the early returns are pretty comparable.

[list]Average salary of American League teams: $107,551,922
Average salary of National League teams: $104,952,617[/list:u]

So, the average American League team makes 2.4% more than the average National League team. Now, you can look at that $2.6 million as the salary difference between the American League's DH and some pinch-hitter's salary on a comparable National League team. But I don't think it indicates much of anything at all, and subsequent years will show that. It could simply mean the Yankees have a lot of guys on the DL this year and needed to double up at positions more than usual.

I think the union is clinging to a shadow. (Which won't stop them from using it as a negotiating hammer.)

I get the need to do this, even for a couple of cents, because a policy is a policy - if there is a lower price, the client gets the refund no matter how small. What I don't get is why they would lower the price of the CD by two cents.

Never soaked it overnite, but I use milk to help the panko adhere, and seems like it would make sense to tenderize.

Squid gets rubbery very easily when cooked, soak probably helps it be more forgiving. Will try lengthier soak next time.

Ask your utility company if they can replace the meter(s) with the new ones that can be read remotely from a truck or car in front of your house. My water company did it. Isn't new technology. The soda companies have been using it for years to determine whether vending machines need re-filling.

All else fails, a two step process:
1) Put up a no trespassing sign.
2) Next time the guy shows up, call the cops.

Knowing the way things work out here, that wouldn't help. The guys would just root around the house longer looking for the kind of meter that every other house in town has. If the guys go around the neighborhood going from house to house to house, one house that's different is going to cause more problems than it would solve.

Nor would the cops have any jurisdiction over this; I'm sure that part of the terms of service for things like electricity and water allow for access to read the meters.

What took you so long?
Couldn't you have combined some of them, like using some of that cable you couldn't hook up to tie her up, then set her on fire (properly, of course) and drag her behind the car you couldn't drive with a corn cob you couldn't shuck jammed down her throat(to shut her up)?
That'd show her.

She's older, and generally a little infirm. She's also been experiencing some knee degeneration, which worsens her mood a lot (surgery due in a month or so to clean out the joint... though she's negged knee replacement because of the rehab length, and seems to have unrealistic expectations about how much arthroscopy will likely help her, long-term).

She's also the kind of woman who insists on bringing wretched, ill-tempered pets on every family trip that doesn't involve planes (and some that do), and critiques our parenting-- and our efforts to teach YoungerPooper Spanish*-- while generally offering less help-- and marginally more personal engagement-- than a Roomba does.

Really, she's no worse than most protective moms, and better than a lot. It's just... some people seem specifically tuned to play on YOUR nerves, specifically. And, also, I just spent five days in an un-air-conditioned camper being yelled at for using the wrong towel.

*Her first language, so, y'know... she could help a LITTLE here without having to work the knee.

I don't have a party.

How about a non-partisan reason? I know it's silly to think about politics from a "Who's best for the job?" standpoint rather than a rather binary "I like box A, is he in box A? no? EVIL" standpoint but I can't really help it.

Re: Apropos of Nothing in 2013

Of course you are.

The answers seems obvious. I can think of 10 reasons pretty fast, but I'm not of a mind to come across like puritan, typing up a long tedious indictment against a guy seeking to govern a city I ain't in. I'll try one.

1. It's already made a big fat liar out of him. (His lies are fat, he's not.) At least twice. He could have said, "I ain't talking about this crap, so call me when you've got an actual crime or something to accuse me of, but the rest is none of your business." Like he was coaching the Jets or something. But he didn't. He's lied to your face with his face. That speaks directly to "whether a guy is or isn't best for the job."

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr
Jul 23 2013 10:35 PM
Re: Apropos of Nothing in 2013

2. Leaving aside the lying aspect... these new allegations have a timeline that begins shortly after his resignation from Congress, following the revelation of his previous indiscretions. Which means that Mr. Danger is either wrestling with a sex-addiction the size of Andre the Giant's older brother (and one which he's determined to indulge, regardless of job-related consequences), or he's got very serious judgement issues, or both. Both might have some impact on his ability to manage/lead... like, anyone.

3. He had an alter-ego... which is just... kind of weirdly intriguing, no? I mean, we have a rough idea of the shape of Weiner's work schedule, and sad extracurricular travails... but what is Carlos Danger's life like? What does Carlos eat for breakfast? Does Carlos play nicely, or rough? What does Carlos wear to play, when he deigns to wear anything? Is Carlos a lover or a loincloth-wearing-fighter-lover? What does Carlos Danger think about the city's role in funding affordable housing, the fairness of renewing the 'commuter tax,' or the handling of expired labor contracts with city workers? Is Carlos Danger a mustache guy?

An Amish smile...

At a interstate exit about 10 miles from where I live there are three truckstops, the usual bag of roady restaurants, and some mom and pop gas stations and mini markets.
There is also a huge Amish farming community.

It's funny to watch a tangle of trucks having to sit and wait out an Amish cart calmly driving through it all. Especially if it's a young girl. Sometimes I wonder if THAT is an Amish punishment...

This was a decade or so after the plane crash; if it wasn't "rewarmed" it was at least a little "dry from being kept in the oven while a decade happened." But if you'd prefer, feel free to substitute "meandering" or "rambling" or "weirdly hagiographic."

I'll agree with one aspect of the "execution" part-- I think it's inhumane to subject someone who isn't a Baby Boomer to this one.

It's Rod McKuen set to a catchy folk melody. Which maybe wouldn't be so bad if it weren't as long as, like, five National Anthems and granted So Important status because it conflates/guides others to conflate "I felt sad when this happened" with "the moment when we lost our innocence" and canonizes-- R. By the way, sort of a Politics thread question, as it speaks to the Affordable Care Act, but isn't it amazing how almost nobody in music, even successful big shots like Matthew Sweet, can maintain a health insurance plan? They all end up getting sick and relying on the kindness of their old bandmates to come out of retirement to do fundraisers and their old fans to make contributions.

Sweet said that his wife never stopped working, no matter how successful he got, because they needed her employee health plan.

I was in Kansas City for a 10 AM business meeting and realized I had left my dress shoes in my car back at Newark Airport. So I went downtown and there was a Gap just opening for business. There was a pair of black loafers in the window. I waved my wallet and asked the guy "How would you like to make an emergency sale?"
He said he would, found my size, and I made it to the meeting with about 5 minutes to spare.

Oddly enough I have an Gap emergency clothing story too. I'd slept late and I was biking to work and forgot to pack a dress shirt and the Gap was the only place open. They had the radio on to a news station but I wasn't paying attention until I got to the register to pay for the shirt I grabbed. At that moment I heard that the World Trade Center had collapsed. you mean something like this?

TUNA MACARONI

1 lb. medium shells
14oz. tuna
1 1/2 cups chopped celery ( I also grate a carrot in too)
1 cup mayo
2 Tbspns. vinegar
salt
pepper
onion powder
paprika

Mix together last 6 ingredients then mix with tuna in a large bowl. Add cooked macaroni and celery mix well.

The onion powder is maybe 2 teaspoons, I am not sure since I just pour it in. The paprika is mostly for color so use your judgement there.

My son worked on a wind farm for an environmental research company this summer. They know there is no way to control the bird kills, but they are keeping track of the numbers.
From the way I understand it, if the wind farm employs a company such as his, they are compliant, even if there is a danger to birds.

The story I read (admittedly one short on details) talked about the wind farm out west somewhere pleading guilty to killing these birds and paying a significant fine over it all. Sounds to me that what they're found guilty of is building a wind farm in the first place.

Apparently the issue here is that they were eagles being killed (although, to much chagrin around here, neither Frey or Henley were injured) and the fact that they're protected. But I still fail to see how the power company was negligent or whatever the reasoning was. I guess if Starlings or some other critter that no one likes were the ones being offed by ramming themselves into windmills then the company would be in the clear.

In the meantime, by all means the gov't should be thinking of ways to make one of the few available non-polluting energy sources we have more expensive and more discouraging to enter.

Note to sportscasters, local news bunnies, radio geeks, etc. -- Stop using the phrase that a particular team's "season [is/will be] over" once they get eliminated, either mathematically or for all practical purposes, from playoff possibilities. No, because unless said elimination comes on the final day of the schedule, there are still games to be played and league rules almost certainly require that they play them.
Or, if you do insist on using that 'season is over' line, then you should cease to cover or even mention the team and their remaining games once they reach that point.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

I mean, nobody refers to ex-baseball managers as 'Manager' like it's some kind of earned title such as Duke, Doctor, or Ambassador. You'll hear 'Skipper' occasionally but more with active ones than with retirees.
Basketball guys seem to carry the 'coach' label but that one doesn't seem to be nearly as universal as in football so I guess a failure to use that title is optional rather than required by criminal statute as in football. Or maybe it's just because those who cover the gridiron and therefore are most likely to talk to and about one-time football coaches are just hopeless suck-ups who worship the guys they're supposedly covering.

But since a lot of the spambots send me messages offering to increase my penis size, Christian Mingle could be trying to help me find my dream girl.)

god has a plan for you. and if that plan is for you to finally follow jesus and grow a large penis with the help of the internet, then, really, who are you to question god's plan?

Re: Apropos of Nothing in 2013

I think when the answer starts with "This book...," the answer would be a book, and the topic would suggest a Biblical book, beginning with R.

Given the choices of Ruth and Revelation, I'm going to go with the latter. What is Revelation?

I intensely dislike the Cowboys and the Braves, and that doesn't make me Un-American.

the big difference there is that the Braves called themselves "America's Team", because of TBS. The Cowboys had the name thrust upon them.

No Biblical offense meant.

Correct. $2000 fake internet dollars. I'll even mail you the stupid tear-off page if you like to frame on your wall.

Tomorrow's Final Jeopardy! category: The 18th Century

btw, the next online test is January 8th or some such.

Chase fraud called me last week about a $68 charge on my account from Christian Mingle......charge originated in Tennessee ...suffice it to say it was not me.

Have you shopped at Target recently? Enormous data crime there, apparently the bad guys tampered with card readers in hundreds and hundreds of stores. How the hell...

With the obvious stipulation that it's always been a dopey idea to brawl for the right to buy over-priced sneakers simply because some basketball player has slapped his name on them; but the fact that folks are still doing it two-plus decades later is particularly idiotic.

I think if someone can't go an hour without internet service, particularly when they've got Alaska to stare at out the window, then they probably deserve to be over-charged.
