Since this is unofficially the day after Dan Fogleberg Day (according to commercial radio), time to pick a Peoria Dan track for your desert island mix tape.

Re: Same Desert Island Syne

I voted for 'Power of Gold,' but 'Tell Me To My Face' from the Twin Sons of Different Mothers album is my favorite Fogeltrack.

That album is first gift I ever gave my wife, for her birthday before we were a couple. 'Longer' was actually our wedding song, which was neither the first nor the last decision in our thirty-three years together that did not go my way.

I voted for "Heart Hotel" because I really like the piano work there, but "Missing You" is close. Probably has hard as he rocks out.

This is good. We went down this road once before, but I screwed it up by leaving out "Longer Than."

Well, shit, is there any artist we haven't done one of these for yet? I was certain this was virgin territory.

Re: Same Desert Island Syne

By adding to the poll, I think I erased a buncha votes. It's good to revisit. Something makes me think Rockin Doc was a Fogleberger. Somebody get Doc back. Cooby, how 'bout you?

We haven't done Whitney Houston. Or Thelma Houston. Or Jim Croce. Or the Young Rascals. Or Dinah Shore. Or The Damned. Or The Dead Boys. Or The Bullet Boys. Or the Backstreet Boys. Or the Dum Dum Girls. Or the Spice Girls.

We haven't done David Cassady, David Soul, or David Archuleta. We haven't done Janis Ian, Janis Joplin, or Janis the Muppet. We haven't done Phoebe Snow or B.B. King or Kiki Dee. We haven't done Cher, Lulu, or Twiggy. We haven't done the Black Crows, the Counting Crows or the Cheryl Crows. We haven't done the Animals, the Byrds, or the Screaming Trees. We haven't done KMFDM, UTFO, EPMD, or BotDF.

Wait, no, Run for the Roses. Or Hearts Hotel. Or Same Old Lang Syne.

Re: Same Desert Island Syne

"Same Old Lang Syne" always struck me as an oddly passive story song. "Hey. Remember that lover of mine? I ran into her the other day at the store, and we went out for a drink afterward. Absolutely nothing happened, and nothing of emotional or actual consequence was said. Still, I will remember that frozen food aisle forever."

I've tried on a lot of different artists, and have listened to a lot of things that one may characterize as "embarrassing," but Fogelberg's one of a very few artists whose stuff embarrasses me even when there's nobody else in the room. "Longer" reminds me of the old barber shop where I used to get clipper-cut in middle-school, and I used to mistake it for Gordon Lightfoot. So... that?

It's the power of Gold, Jerry!

Lotta cowbell action in that last one.

I voted for "Leader of the Band" because I remember really liking it at the time (I was eight) and it's nice to write a tribute to your dad. Maybe the radio stations should play this song every year on Father's Day?

It's basically the same plot as Harry Chapin's "Taxi" from a decade earlier, right on down to the assumption that the woman is only pretending to be happy with her husband.

Yeah, that's not a bad takeaway. "I lost the girl, but she's unhappily sheltered in a loveless marriage, so I've got that going for me, which is nice."

Yes, except "'Cause I've been letting my outside tide me over 'till my time runs out." wears a hell of a lot better than "We tried to reach past the emptiness" and "We drank a toast to innocence." I mean, holy shit, Dan-- the architect may just be a roof over her head, but if she'd stayed with you, she'd have shot herself years ago.

Give him credit. The man knew scansion.

He also briefly channels Jackson Brown and for a moment turns it into another existential-rigors-of-the-road song.

[list]She said she saw me in the record stores
And that I must be doing well
I said the audience was heavenly
But the traveling was hell.

Ok, there are a couple problems with this song:

"She went to hug me and she
spilled her purse
And we laughed until we cried."

Fogelberg's bar for comedy is pretty low if purse-spilling moves him to tears.

TOP FIVE LIKELIEST ITEMS IN PURSE OF 'SOLS' "OLD LOVER":

5) Magnum condoms
4) Mace, purchased after she sensed someone following her into the supermarket
3) Mad magazine pullout poster of "Jonathan Livingpoor OceanRat"
2) Fart-in-a-bag
1) Polaroids of him, taken as she followed him in the drugstore the previous week

Nice date, by the way. Buy a six at the liquor store, drink it in her car, and then watch her swerve off into the wintry mix with three beers in her belly, a lifetime of regret of in her heart, and a sad sax solo on the radio. How irresponsible is that?

Dan, if you can't find an open bar, that's God talking to you right there.

They had a huge poster for the Fogelberg/Weisberg duo album on the bullpen wall at WKRP. I guess the set designer thought that passed for cool in 1978.

Good point! Should have gone to Mickey D's for shakes and fries.

And why is she abandoning her husband on Christmas Eve for drinks with an old flame in the car? Can you imagine what that conversation was like when she got home?

"Honey, where have you been? I've had "The Grinch" in the DVD player and eggnog ready to go for an hour."

A: Oh, I was at Pathmark and ran into a friend.

"You smell like Miller Light. Who was the friend?"

A: We had some beer in the car. It was Dan Fogelburp.

"Who the hell is that? Oh, wait, the guy you dated? Isn't he like some singer or something?"

A: He's a troubadour.

"Oh, excuse me! You're pounding beer in the car with an ex-boyfriend while I'm sitting here wrapping presents?"

A: Sort of.

"Oh, man. Hey, wait a minute. Isn't he the guy who sings that wimpy "Longer" song? Never mind. he's not a threat."

Re: Same Desert Island Syne

Just getting my computer updated. Our IT guy is sitting at my desk talking music.

IT: "When I was young I was in a Motown cover band."

EMD: "Must've been fun."

IT: "Mostly. Got to open for The Who."

EMD: "Wow. Awesome."

IT: "Yeah, they were mostly unknown back then. Coming through town. Townsend came by the music store where I worked and bought a $29 guitar. Had no idea why he bought such a shitty guitar until later."

EMD: "And you played Motown covers?"

IT: "Yeah, we played a more-or-less tight set. Our singer --- I don't know if you ever heard of him --- was a guy named Dan Fogelberg."

EMD: [bigpurple:3qeq0jlc]"Dan Fogelburp?!"[/bigpurple:3qeq0jlc]

I actually preferred it to its most direct antecedent, DOONESBURY, with its emphasis on character over politics. And despite its success, Breathed ended BLOOM COUNTY when he felt he was done with it. He later incorporated some of the characters into his sequel strip, OUTLAND, but it was never on the same level.

Oh I did also and by a huge margin, although I was never the biggest Doonesbury fan in the world so maybe that doesn't mean as much in my case.

I remember when he ended the strip he did so while denouncing cartooning as a "moribund art form" although that wasn't all that long after he had applied for membership in the National Cartoonist Society. Not quite sure what caused the rather abrupt turn-around there but it seemed like maybe something ticked him off to the entire process rather than just deciding that his characters had run their course. That he later came back with some of them for the, as you mention, lesser version of OUTLAND muddies up the water even more.

Re: Same Desert Island Syne

The funny thing is the even more inferior Opus demonstrated how he used his pull to make the art form far less moribund --- using painting and matting techniques I can't begin to explain to give his strip a presentation that shamed those adjacent to it on the Sunday page. As much as it took arm twisting at the syndicate, and probably meant that there were many papers the strip couldn't effectively run in, the result was meh --- something akin to the newer Star Wars trilogy or the recent Hobbit, where the artist re-emerges having found new techniques to advance the art form, but not the art itself.

Re: Same Desert Island Syne

The 1980s was the last golden age of newspaper comics with Bloom County, Calvin & Hobbes, and The Far Side. It's too bad that new comic artists haven't been able to step into their place and the newspapers are filled with legacy comics.

Waterson, Larson, and Breathed all got out while the getting was good, too. At least initially.

The writing generally isn't particularly funny, but I'll push the artwork on Mutts anytime I'm asked.
