Re: Live and Sweaty '13

My John Cale week.

On Tuesday saw him play a tribute to Nico. He and his band and a bunch of guest singers (including Kim Gordon and Stephen Merritt) did Nico songs. I was unfamiliar with her solo material other than Chelsea Girls which they didn't perform and I was impressed with her songwriting ability. Maybe it was just the arrangements (Cale produced many of her albums) but it sounded swell.

Then last night I saw Cale, his band and a 20-piece orchestra perform his Paris 1919 album, a work I've loved since it came out (40 years ago!). Little Feat and a string section were the backing band on the album. After doing that album there was an interval and he and band and orchestra returned to play a bunch of his songs. The orchestra was excused for the last song (the title track from his new album, Hard Time in the Nookie Wood). He and the band returned to play the Velvets' Venus in Furs which was a Lou Reed song but who's counting. Anyway, two very good shows.

Re: Live and Sweaty '13

Ian Hunter is 73 years old but played a lively 2 hour show. He had a good band with him and was in good spirits, sounded better singing when seated at the piano than standing with a guitar. Brought his youngest son Jesse out to sing on a couple of songs (looks in his 20s). Played about 2/3rds of the new record along with Mott and other oldies (All-American Alien Boy, Young Dudes, All the Way to Memphis, One Bitten... Did not do "Central Park n' West" "Lisa Likes Rock n Roll" or Cleveland Rocks"

First show at the City Winery, and had a nice time if prolly too much wine. On those narrow tables you get to know your neighbors, the folks sitting opposite from us were dog trainers from Alaska in town for Westminster. Gotta love NYC. Mean to see how they did.

Thin Lizzy/Motley Crue/KISS: [A-/B+/C]
Saw Lizzy two nights ago in an acoustically horrible venue filled with bogans; this was a much, much better experience and my word these guys know how to rock hard. Definitely the highlight of the evening. They deserved better than to be "jerking the curtain" to KISS whose fans are incapable of appreciating classic rock unless it wears make-up.

Crüe [crossout]sluts[/crossout] groupies are ubiquitously hot . I want to marry one.

Their show was electrifying but only lasted 40 minutes before paramedics whisked Vince Neill off apparently suffering some illness (drugs/obesity/gonorrhea/who knows). I'm sure he'll live. The Crüe still know how to bring it. I'm devastated their part of the show didn't last longer. All three of their shows I've been to involved some sort of calamity preventing me from seeing the full show.

As for KISS, my two favorite KISS songs are sung by Peter Criss and Ace Frehely. Hence, this version of KISS is a shit band for twats.

Stanley is the doyen of "cheap heat" -- whereas Neill was calling us "a bunch of stupid motherfuckers", Stanley draped himself in the Australian flag. He reminds of a pro-wrestler who name-drops the local city's name to elicit a response. And the show is choreographed to such a degree, it may as well have been pro-wrestling. The result is something very sterile.

On a sidenote, I managed to attract the ire of the KISS faithful (a rare breed of twat) when Stanley told us to call for him, after everybody yelled "Paul", I yelled: "Axl".

Edit: apparently Vince neill had a broken arm and kidney stones so I'm upgrading MC rating to a B+

Well, true. But any band that sings their hearts out in-front of an unappreciative audience will get good reviews in my book, plus they sang "Rosalie"on that particular night, which was on my bingo card of rare hits i wanted to see live. I'll post some vids when I get my shit together.

Meanwhile, here's my Presidents of the USA review

(forgot the opening band's name)/Germonio/ Presidents of the United States of America: --/--/B- (or William H. Taft)

The venue was the UNSW Roundhouse which was the venue of my first ever college exam, a symbolic bit of trivia because like my performance in said exam, POTUSA were fairly sub-standard and barely scraped a passing grade.

I’m not a huge fan of POTUSA by any stretch of the imagination -- I know two of their songs: the cover and the one about fruit. I only went for the wife’s benefit (in a trade involving her attending Thursday Night Football). But here’s what I don’t like: Bands teasing popular favourites (e.g. a mini-medley comprising of “I Got You”/ “I Wanna be Sedated”/ “Highway to Hell”) to pump up the crowd for their iconic song, which itself is a cover.

Douchebags By The Numbers reports there was more crowd douche-ness at this gig, than there was at MC/KISS and GNR combined, mostly attributable to the potent mix of college crowd + cheap booze. Speaking of douchebags, the lead-singer is like the American Peter Garrett and not only because of his Norwood 7 alopecia.

In fairness, after being in the presence of a Rock and Roll deity on Tuesday night, even the Beatles in their prime would have represented a huge letdown. So with that out of the way, tomorrow night I’ll get up in the evening, and won’t have nothing to say!

Please, no. No "wife". It's an Aussie term of derision for somebody you date for too long. The "the" prefix is crucial for differentiating a real wife from just "the wife".

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band -- A

No "I'm on Fire" or "Cover me" = shit show (haha! Just kidding, just KIDDING!)

The first thing that struck me was how normal and unbelievably well-behaved everybody was. Now I've always believed in an irrefutable correlation between a fan’s loyalty to an artist and carrying like a completely and utter twat. But after last night’s experience, this is something I must seriously call into question. And they don't come much more loyal than the Boss' tifosi.

The second thing I noticed was the hot-ish women in the crowd, in a Courtney Cox-ish 80's sorta way inspiring this REDs list. I was highly tempted to ask the chick sitting next to me whether the rolled scarf headband was how she normally dressed or whether it was a special dress-up for the show?

This was my first live Bruce show and it provided me with a valuable insight into why Bruce has such a loyal fanbase, namely because he reciprocates the passion of his fans and then some.

It was an highly-energetic, organic performance that complements his new direction; his voice is more brooding in real life, in a positive way. I found myself digging his later stuff more than I thought I would, with the exception of “Land of Hope and Dreams” which for some reason inspires images of the MFY.

Btw, such a great line that I never paid much notice to before in the gagillion times I heard the song (mainly because its mumbled in the studio version):
I'm dying for some action
I'm sick of sitting 'round here trying to write this book
I need a love reaction
Come on baby give me just one look

The only sour point was that he didn't pick me to dance with him during "Dancing in the Dark"; given that I recently discovered his baseball leanings, this may be understandable under the circumstances. But I'm going again on Friday night so I live in hope. Come on Bruce please sing “I’m on Fire” or “Cover Me”, I'll become your second-biggest fan on Crane Pool if you do!

1978 intro to Prove it all night!!!!!!

I swear I was thinking about writing something unflattering which may or may not have included the words "Yankee" and "lover but two things happened in rapid succession that prevented this:
(1) he pointed straight at the jersey I was wearing (road gray, Ike) during "Dancing in the Dark"
(2) he closed with "Rosalita", an electrifying performance that Mariano would have been proud of (Someday we'll look back on this and it will all seem funny!)

Fake edit: performance of the evening was my rendition of "Badlands" on the drive home.

Re: Live and Sweaty '13

Sounds like you got two great shows. Lots of insight in your review and it's always fascinating to me to see someone's reaction after seeing the show for the first time.

Bruce's "preference" for the MFYs is known but I maintain that he's still just a casual/bandwagon fan. After all, in the "Glory Days" music video, he's watching a 1985 Mets-Reds game with Doc pitching while he "daydreams" of pitching.

At the end of the video, he admits that "Nettles got him in the bottom of the 9th," meaning that he was pitching against San Diego...and for the Mets.

I saw Belle & Sebastian in Williamsburg Park a couple of years ago. You stand on concrete but the sound and viewability were fine. Seeing them at Celebrate Brooklyn this year with Yo La Tengo, looking forward to that one.

Saw Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds a couple of weeks ago at the Beacon. Had a huge band, a string section, a children's choir and a couple of other backup singers. One of the loudest shows I've ever been at. Opened and closed with a bunch of songs from his new album and played his "hits" in the middle. He's a pretty magnetic showman and there was a lot of audience interaction. Liked it a bunch.

He's definitely shooting for 20-something guys, specifically, kids who grew up on punk but see him as a means of broadening their musical horizons without surrendering the "authenticity" and DIY ethos of their youthful music heroes. Something like capturing Coors Lite drinkers at the moment they transition to microbrews, it's a powerful badge, and his fans tend to express their belief in him in idiotic ways such as tattooing his lyrics on their ribs and necks. I think Turner knows full-well this is a potentially lucrative and desirable demographic but he's not taking any chances on someone else capturing them so he works super hard.

I never understood the practice of fans wearing earplugs to concerts. My sister always told me it was the ultimate disrespect to an artist to wear earplugs at a gig. (The fact she made me stand next to the cannons at my first Acca-Dacca concert at a young age and I nearly lost my hearing during "For Those About to Rock" is a completely separate issue).

To illustrate the absurdity of wearing earplugs at shows, during the 1st Bruce show the chick he picked out for DitD was wearing earplugs; first she tried to communicate with him with sign language. His mouth was 1/2 inch from her ear and it was apparent she still had no idea what he was saying. Eventually she fished one out her ear in-front of him and it looked really bad.

The morale of the story is thus: Earplugs are only for ballplayers who play in-front of ungrateful fans.

Whoa, we're going to have to agree-to-disagree there.

For one, the earplugs are not to block out sound but rather to attenuate it, which is often necessary when standing near the front, or at venues where the sound is just too loud. I like to go to a lot of concerts but also don't want to go deaf. Good earplugs are the solution. I highly recommend this product: http://www.etymotic.com/hp/er20.html

And secondly, the ultimate disrespect to an artist is talking through their show, especially during the quiet songs. If you can't shut up, just stay home.

That's my bigger issue. I brought plugs when I saw Aerosmith a while back, because I knew we were on the side of the stage and were going to be right next to the speakers. And I gave MiniWolf earplugs for the Warrant show last summer because he's seven.

Edgy MD
Apr 22 2013 09:06 AM
Re: Live and Sweaty '13

Well, my understanding is that most behavior at most concerts is barely even perceivable to the artist(s), with the possible exception of the 12-20 folks front and center. And certainly not what you have in your ears. Insults to your fellow concert-goers is another thingaling.

On the other hand, I went to a funky-assed APB concert in 1985. During the break before the encores, knowing that the show was being broadcast, my friends and I in back conspired to yell something so enigmatic that it would be surely recognizable as us during the radio broadcast. We listened to the rebroadcast and there we were! Injecting our shit on their scene!

Flash forward to 2008. I'm shopping at a Rock 'n' Shop hipster Christmas sale at the Black Cat Club, and I find a Greatest Hits collection of APB music just aimed right between my eyes, and plunk down the $12 gladly. Not so surprisingly, it's one of those catch-as-catch-can Greatest Hits packages you get from those almost-but-not-quite-big bands, who forever switched labels, leaving their current label unable to gather the rights to the all their past masters. So they pad the Greatest package with tracks from live performances. Delightfully, I soon realize that they drew liberally from that 1985 show at Hofstra that I was at. Disappointingly, but unsurprisingly, on reflection, I shortly thereafter realized that they edited the goofy scream from my friends and I out.

How obnoxious were we? Very! Insulters to the artist!

What really caused me to buy the ticket though, was the opening set by Peter Buck. Yes, he was fronting a band in support of his first-ever solo album. And he sang! It was humorously awesome. I'd call it a set of original songs as different homage to Peter's various favorite musical styles. Yes, there were guests - Lenny Kaye, doing "Pushin' Too Hard," by the Seeds, as tribute to George Jones. Plus Mike Mills. Singing "Near Wild Heaven" (yes, really).

Nice. Robyn and I are friends on Facebook and somehow I didn;t know he was coming through town. That vocalist on the left performed with Hitchcock last time I saw him, as did Buck and McCaughey. I don;t get a good look at that drummer but I would guess he's the Decemberists guy? I think that's the same group. Chick on bass maybe?

The drummer is Bill Rieflin, who was formerly of Ministry and R.E.M. (2003-2011).

The vocalist is Sean Nelson, formerly of Harvey Danger ("Flagpole Sitta").

The other guitarist is Kurt Bloch, formerly of the Fastbacks.

That it was. As mentioned above I won admission to this gig, which I realized was an event for contest winners, Clear Channel schmoozers, and an Internet broadcast promoting their IHeartRadio streaming service (broadcast's attempt to fight off Pandora via streaming stations).

Anyway, the venue is a hall off the lobby of their office building near the Holland Tunnel entrance in Tribeca. Around 200 people can fit in, there was less than that there I would guess for Cheap Trick. I was probably the 50th person in and found a spot with elbow room with only one person in front of me, stage right in front of Nielsen. I went by myself but found a begging fan on the sidewalk out front and let him be my "guest"

Show was supposed to commemorate the Budokan record (35th anniversary? yikes) and they played the whole LP as released, plus a few extras includng a new song, Dream POlice, Baby Loves to Rock. 15 songs in a little more than an hour. No opener, show began promptly, advertiser/partners handing out samples of soda and ritz crackers before and after. Weird but not bad considering the price.

CT didn't cheat us much beyond that that I could tell. I mean, they weren't going to suddenly break out into long solos and off-setlist selections but everyoone understood that going in. Rick Nielsen is funny, makes goofy faces the whole time, got a different guitar for almost every song (I think 10 for 15 songs overall, including the 5-necker for the Auf Weidershein closer) and threw dozens of custom picks out to the crowd. Everyone left with a few, I got 3. Robin, not bad with the vox but left the hosting to Rick. Tom Petersson looked like a guy trying hard not to look old. They are all in their early 60s.

Rick's son Daxx was the drummer. I know some CT fans think they are missing a vital piece without Bun E Carlos but he's apparently complained of back trouble that limited their rocking-ness. Daxx had a great look and good energy I think but I guess, lacks Bun's humor and presence in some ways.

I took lots of pictures and a little video here.

So as things turned out I wasn't invited to see Elton John, it was for employees only. They offered me Luke Bryan (streams as a bland pop-country singer) but I turned that down.

Wal_Mart is crazy. They intersperse the annual meeting with a big pep rally attended by 14000 workers in the UArkansas basketball arena, so while shareholder activists are trying to raise issues of corporate governance in the wake of 1100 deaths at a Bangladesh factory fire the company was apparently contracting with, and reports of widespread corruption and a subsequent coverup in Mexico, and union-backed workers complaining of massive pay disparity, etc, they follow it up with performance contemporary pop stars and Hollywood idols. (issues defeated anyway, the Walton family controls majority of the stock)

Special guest MC was Hugh Jackman, performances by Prince Royce (Latin star), John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson. Oh, and Tom Cruise. At 7 in the morning.

Arkansas countryside was very pretty and weather yesterday was beeeeee-yute-iful. Coming back here was nuts.

Al Yankovic is still bringin' the weird after all these years.

We took the boys to see him at Philadelphia's Tower Theater last night. Great show. The music was pretty much the same as when we last saw him in 2011, although the between-song filler had a lot of new and entertaining material. But Weird Al is about the familiar, and he does the familiar well. The band has been together for at least as long as we've been seeing them, which is a long time - they're musically tight and much more accomplished than you'd assume.

And the show is fun. Period. As Homer Simpson once said, "He who is tired of Weird Al is tired of life."

Tonight was Os Mutantes. I've loved the collection that of their 60's and 70's music that David Byrne put together a while back. The new band has only one original member but their old songs sounded great. Their new ones not so much.

Coming up this month: Belle & Sebastian with Yo La Tengo; The Specials (Hudson Pier); The Waterboys; Lone Bellow with Low Anthem; Bob Dylan with Wilco and Beck (Jones Beach).

Cyndi Lauper is touring in order to celebrate the 30th anniversary of her "She's So Unusual" album, and D-Dad and I caught last night's show at the Beacon. Her main set was playing the entire album, interspersing stories between songs in her inimitable way. The encore set included some of her indie work, "The Sex Is In The Heel" from Kinky Boots and "True Colors." She still has a great set of pipes, and she brought it last night.

I've always loved her. she and Madonna hit at around the same time, and i always thought she would be the bigger star. She was way more talented and quirky and funny and interesting. She had 4-octave range and a sense of humor, but Madonna was sexier. guess what worked more? Video surely killed that radio star.

I first heard Lauper singing with her band, BLUE ANGEL. I heard their album, then saw them play in the city somewhere. I swear i never heard a voice like hers... pure in its pitch, powerful in its emotional punch, far-reaching in its range, and oddly original. She wasn't pretty, but her voice was. i was in love. but it didn't last. ah love. Then her solo album, SHE'S SO UNUSUAL and she was EVERYWHERE. But when everybody liked her, she lost that snob appeal for me... i.e., if everybody likes her, she can't be any good.

After the 80s, she slipped from relevance. Sure, she did an occasional sitcom or feature, and an album now and then, and she'd pop up here and there but she had fallen off my radar. Then she did that reality show, and a Broadway musical, and now suddenly she is back. I was very happy to see her again. While the score she wrote for KINKY BOOTS wasn't groundbreaking, it was functional with some nice melodic moments. I was rooting for her to win the Tony and she did, so good for her.

Welcome back, Cyn. I missed you.

Belle and Sebastian with Yo La Tengo at Celebrate Brooklyn.

Yo La Tengo played about an hour, often changing instruments and doing their noise-music alternating with quiet songs alternating with rock songs.

Yo La Tengo may be named after a moment in Mets history, but Belle & Sebastian, of course, have a Mets-referenced song. Stuart Murdoch noted that they had to play "Piazza, New York Catcher" since he had looked at the schedule and had seen that the two named teams were playing each other. Yes, it was the day before that they finished their series but that seemed like splitting hairs. In any event, the line "the Giants and Mets will play" did receive a cheer. Murdoch came into the audience a couple of times and brought about 30 audience members onto the stage as dancers for "Boy With the Arab Strap." A great evening.

Crossed the bridge to PNC with my wife and three friends from Brooklyn for a Barenaked Ladies / Ben Folds Five / Guster show. We were very sweaty (though still live) after the uphill march from the parking lot, but the show was worth the effort. We were interested in seeing how BNL accommodated for the departed Steven Page, and they did so with Ed Robertson taking up a lot of the slack, the other guys in the band taking pieces of some songs, and opening act Boothby Graffoe jumping in as well. If you didn't know he was missing you'd never realize it.

I've never seen BNL before, but have seen Guster and BFF, and they did not disappoint. Getting out of the parking lot is an adventure, but we filled the car with cheap NJ gas and hit a diner in Edison on the way home. It was a fun, fine night with good friends and music.

I was at that concert. D-Dad and I always pay the extra money for the VIP parking lot so that we can avoid the post-concert death march.

Skipped Guster in favor of hanging out at one of the venue's bars. Loved BFF - I didn't really get into Ben Folds until he went solo, so seeing the band together was a big thrill.

BNL is definitely not the same without Page - the harmonies are diminished. The set was fun nonetheless, but lesser than what you know it should have been.

BTW, remember how worried I was about bringing my good camera and lens into Citi Field for the ASG festivities because professional cameras weren't allowed, and how ultimately I sailed through security? Well, the PNC Bank Arts Center's website said that cameras without detachable lenses are allowed. Thus, I packed my larger point and shoot (Nikon Coolpix P90). Security first told me I couldn't bring it in because it looked like a professional camera. I told them I could, because it doesn't have a detachable lens. So the guy who was ostensibly in charge starts trying to argue with me about it. I stand my ground (not in the Florida way). He asks where I'm sitting (WTF? How is that relevant to a venue's overall policy?). I had good seats, but I wasn't going to tell him back, so I said it wasn't the pit or anything like that - he finally relented and let me through.

We saw BNL and Ben Folds on Monday at Merriweather Post Pavillion in Columbia, MD. It was the fourth time for us with BNL and they are better than ever. Of course it's not the same without Steven Page (yes, the harmonies are worse in the absence of Steven's lovely voice) but the band is having more fun without him and it shows. The new album is great, especially "Odds Are." They will be in Brooklyn on July 30--don't miss them.

There's also the issue of having acts tour together who don't necessarily share a fan base. Not that I don't like BNL (how could you not?), but I was really there to see BFF, so BNL's set didn't interest me quite as much.

A few years ago Ben Folds toured with Tori Amos. It was very easy to differentiate the Ben fans from the Tori fans; those in jeans and t-shirts were for Ben, while those wearing pretty sundresses were there to see Tori.

At least there was more common interest with last night's lineup.

This past week:

Wednesday was The Specials at Hudson Pier 26. Much of the '80's band is still around. I didn't really know their music other than their first album and "Ghost Town" and, guess what, that means I knew most of what they played. They sounded great, very sweaty show. Pier 26, for being a big concrete slab, is not a bad place to see a show. It juts way out into the Hudson so it was a bit cooler plus was very dramatic with a view of the Freedom Tower and across the river.

Friday was the Waterboys at Celebrate Brooklyn. Wasn't that familiar with them when they were popular and listening to their records was a bit skeptical but they put on a great live show. Very tight band.

Saturday was Lone Bellow and Low Anthem at Celebrate Brooklyn. This was the best show of the three. I have liked Low Anthem for a few years and was disappointed that they have retired all of their earlier music and played only new stuff which didn't always gel but they are always interesting. Lone Bellow was fantastic. I wasn't that familiar with their music before and the idea of an alt.country band from Brooklyn does seem off-putting but they are so worth seeing. The crowd was going crazy for this show. Who knew they had that kind of following?

I get the economics of it--neither BNL or BFF are big enough at the moment to fill, or almost fill, an outdoor theater, but together they can. The problem is that neither band is playing for as long as their true fans would like (about 1:15 each). I noticed BNL fans arriving during BFF and BFF fans leaving during BNL.

They’re not everybody’s cup of tea, but wifey and I saw the Eagles at Bethel Woods last night. Tough place to get in and out of, but a great experience once you are in. We had a great time in a great atmosphere.

They played 27 songs total over three hours. The theme of the show was ‘History of the Eagles’ so the first set was the early years. Bernie Leadon (!) played this part of the show with the band, and it was great to see/hear him after all these years. And he ditched the Art Garfunkel hair and now has a shaved head making him look like a bouncer.

Joe Walsh played with them on the first set, but deferred mostly to Bernie. The second set comprised the Walsh years, and Joe didn’t disappoint. He sang lead on five songs, and was the star with his guitar on Life in the Fast Lane. Not surprising, since I think it’s long been recognized that he is the best of these guys live.

Wifey (not a big Eagles fan) recognized all but the first two songs of the show.

Set 1
Saturday Night (acoustic Henley and Frey only)
Train Leaves here this Morning (Leadon with Henley and Frey only)
Peaceful Easy Feeling (Schmit joins the other three on stage)
Witchy Woman (Walsh joins the others on stage)
Doolin-Dalton
Tequila Sunrise
Mashup of Doolin-Dalton/Desperado
Already Gone
Best of My Love
Lyin’ Eyes
One of These Nights
Take It to the Limit (Frey on lead vocals after a shout out to Randy Meisner, who Frey says is feeling much better after a health scare; Frey was OK on the vocal…it was more of a crowd sing-along anyway)

Set 2 (Exit Bernie Leadon)
Pretty Maids All in a Row
I Can’t Tell You Why
New Kid in Town
Love Will Keep Us Alive
Heartache Tonight
Those Shoes
In the City
Life’s Been Good
The Long Run
Funk #49 (!!)
Life in the Fast Lane

Encore 1
Hotel California

Encore 2 (Bernie returns)
Take It Easy
Rocky Mountain Way
Desperado

Schaefer Eagle of the Concert points:
Walsh 4
Frey 2.25

No mention of Don Felder I see.

This tour comes on the heels of the 'History of the Eagles' special that was floating around cable TV several months ago. One of the things that was apparent from that was that Felder didn't depart on good terms. And while most band departures are probably on less than good terms, in Felder's case it was particularly bad. Mostly his fights were with Frey, which isn't surprising because the other fights in the band seemed to involve Leadon & Frey , or between Meisner & Frey, or Henley & Frey, or David Geffen and Frey, or between ... well, you get the picture.

Bob Dylan, Wilco and Beck at Jones Beach.

Ryan Bingham, of "Crazy Heart" fame, opened but I got there too late. Also, missed the first two Beck songs because I was waiting for the world's slowest grilled cheese sandwich to come out of the Gorilla Cheese stand. Stupid arena doesn't sell beer, either. What's with that?

In any event, Beck was really good. Had a guitarist, bass player and keyboard guy but no drummer. Relied heavily on both the "Sea Change" material and several of his sheet music songs. He closed with an attempt at "Where It's At" which didn't really work with no drummer and limited electronics.

Wilco played about half of an ordinary Wilco show and then brought on Beck to do, first a song I was unfamiliar with and then "California Stars." Then they brought out Ciba Matto (Sean Lennon, Yuka Honda (the wife of Wilco's lead guitar player, Nels Cline) and Miho Hatori to do Beck's "Loser." Then Sean Lennon took the mic to do "Yer Blues" and they closed with "Tomorrow Never Knows."

Dylan did the usual set he's been doing for this tour. I've seen him many times and I'd put this performance somewhere in the middle. Very nice version of "She Belongs to Me" which I had never seen him do. Has huge torches on either side of the stage and very little in the way of overhead lighting.

Got home late. A lot of good music.

Wow, nice with Beck. I've got the same one this weekend, but Richard Thompson instead of Beck & Bingham. Been reading some really sour reviews of the Dylan shows throughout the tour... lots of people bailing during his set. Seems there's been some cool collaborations with Wilco & MMJ, so I'm sticking around, for sure. I've seen him before so my expectations will be... tempered.

Saw Wilco 4 times last year and this will make twice this year (ULTIMATE DAD ROCK FAN BOI), and MMJ are one of the best American rock bands going, for my money. Optimistic for good stuff that day either way.

Mine was the only show that Beck played on for the tour.

As for Bob, if you know what he sounds like going in then it can be, and usually is, an enjoyable experience. People who haven't heard him since the '70's react otherwise. He has completely rewritten some of the verses of "Tangled Up in Blue." He's always had varying versions of the song but the one I heard last week was the most radical reinvention yet. While sometimes his experiments with his songs don't work, I admire the fact that he isn't trying to be a human jukebox and sometimes his explorations reveal depths to songs that they didn't originally have or at least expose some elements of the song that I at least hadn't recognized before.

I saw Frank Turner in Brooklyn on Tuesday. He is attempting to meld punk and folk but it doesn't always work, the punk ethos I think interferes with his songs being as complete as they might be; his latest album for example has a couple of earworms and an attempt at an epic but feels like it was finished too soon, and maybe too spare. His band and show is somewhat the same, good entertainment but could stand a little more musicalness, if that's such a thing.

British folkie Ben Marlowe opened with an acoustic set, followed by an aggressive punk band I'd also never heard of, Off With Their Heads. Their music wasn't my cup of meat but was pretty good for what it was; singer was very Bob Mouldish (turns out they are also Twin Cities). Bunch of elbow-swinging dorks cleared the floor for that part of the show and a few were summarily dragged out fighting. Dicks.

Great conclusion to the Washington Post review of the show here.

It didn’t feel like rock music so much as music that had grown beneath rocks. And after four and a half decades, it was still there, lurking and fermenting, gaining a weird potency, still very alive.

Hanson last night at the Paramount in Huntington; got free tix from a friend. Brought MiniWolf to his second rock show -- incredibly, he made it through about fifteen songs. Unfortunately, we left before my favorite tune, "Penny & Me," which, judging from recent setlists I'm finding online, we only missed by a song or two. Urg. Lesson -- check setlists before I bring the little guy to shows.

Depeche Mode last night at Jones Beach. Free tickets (thank you WXPK).

Very enjoyable show; a healthy mix of hits and songs from their new album. Highlights included a piano-and-vocal only version of "Shake the Disease," "Behind the Wheel" and the big audience singing for "Enjoy the Silence."

It's clear that Dave Gahan did a LOT of drugs but his voice is intact and he's got great presence and energy onstage.

It's been a while since I went to an all-reserved seating show. Felt downright luxurious to just stroll in at 7:30 and sit in seats.

Re: Live and Sweaty '13

I was thinking it would be a good time for Depeche mode to do a career retrospective tour. Bring back Allan Wilder jsut for the tour and, for the first 10 songs, Vince Clarke, sort of like the Eagles brought back Bernie Headon. Vince Clarke could also do the opening set with Yaz.

John Prine and Roseanne Cash at the Beacon. Live, but not at all sweaty, although Prine has gotten pretty heavy.

Re: Live and Sweaty '13

Saw a triple bill of retro soul/funk last nite in Brooklyn.

Naomi Shelton opened, did straight-up old-school gospel & organ. The Budos Band came next and they were fun: 12-piece all-instrumental combo -- massive horns, 4 drummers, 12 long beards -- that did what I'd describe as a mix of bop and disco, with some funk and prog-rock. They were whack.

Headliner was soul belter Charles Bradley. He's evidently an oft-homeless handyman who didn't get a record deal until his early 60s. But a really powerful singer and the closest thing to James Brown I'll ever see. All these performers made all this retro soul sound totally authentic, but it was still a little weird to be amid a throng of white 20somethings in gentrified Williamsburg going nuts for this stuff.

Here's Budos Band (not from last nite):

I got to see Deer Tick last night at a local club. They put on a great (mostly sober) show.

I've decided that they are my favorite band that has emerged in the past 10 years. They combine some of the best elements of other bands that I already have as favorites: The Rolling Stones, Nirvana, The Replacements and others.

Very entertaining.

I can't even imagine what I would do if I broke a string. (Especially considering I'm borrowing a friend's high-end Martin acoustic for the show.)

Pearl Jam last night at the LA Sports Arena. Most people at this point sorta dismiss the band completely or really love 'em, and for whatever reason, they've always stuck with me through the years. First I've seen em since since '98, I think it was, and it was a helluva lot of fun. No opener, they played 3 hours and it was not mind-blowing or anything, but their live chops are second-to-none and it was just a shitload of fun. Nostalgia or whatever it is, I still really, really like that band & I'm glad I went.

Ed's still a nut, too. Swinging from shit like a, young Eddie Vedder, I guess. Photo --> https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/58640381/Ed.JPG

Top 5 of 2013:

5. Queens of the Stone Age, Masonic Temple, Brooklyn
Small venue show really made their new songs come alive. Josh Homme is one of my favorite frontmen.

4. Depeche Mode, Jones Beach
Fun show AND the tickets were free. Speaking of great frontmen, Dave Gahan was really enjoyable to see, and he's kept his voice in great shape.

3. Patti Smith, Webster Hall, New York
Sneaking in under the wire, this show from this past Monday was one of the best I can recall seeing Patti do. Two Lou Reed covers in memoriam, but also strong versions of both her classic material and her new songs.

2. Arcade Fire, Brooklyn, NY
Special promo show in advance of the release of their album. I was dubious about their new material until seeing them come alive on stage. They're not back in New York until next August for three (!) arena shows so this was a real treat to see.

1. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Turku, Finland
Yes, still the greatest live band and yes, in Finland. You never know when (or where) there's going to be a show for the ages and I'm damn glad I traveled for this one.

Yeah. I didn't have a huge problem with it, because these were special small venue shows.

My Top 5 of 2013:

1. John Cale at BAM. Early in January but stayed as the best show. Had an orchestra there for "Paris 1919" and some of his back material. Ended with a great version of "Venus In Furs."
2. Bob Dylan/Wilco/Beck at Jones Beach. Especially the Wilco set after they brought on Sean Lennon and Ciba Matto to do "Loser" "Yer Blues" and "Tomorrow Never Knows."
3. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds at the Beacon.
4. Belle & Sebastian and Yo La Tengo at Celebrate Brooklyn
5. The Lone Bellow at Celebrate Brooklyn

Some good ones there. I missed Nick Cave a couple of times this year and heard he dominated. Saw Yo La Tengo at a record store here in Long Beach and they were wonderful. It was a short set, otherwise they woulda made my top 5. We got My Morning Jacket instead of Beck in CA, and those guys and Wilco both crushed before Dylan came on and ruined everything.

My top 5:

5) Phosphorescent at the Glass House. One of my fav records this year and a great set to a small room.
4) Local Natives at the El Rey (record release show to the home crowd). I love these guys.
3) Paul McCartney at Bonnaroo. Holy shit. Still got it.
2) Pearl Jam at the LA Sports Arena. Nothing mind-blowing about this show, but as much fun as I've had at a concert in years.
1) Jeff Tweedy solo at Largo (2-way tie for 1st, saw him two different nights). Guy's a brilliant songwriter and performer, and working the crowd, he's as good as there is in the biz. The opener was comedian Jeff Garland, and Tweedy was funnier both nights. He's got a stand-up career waiting for him if he ever gets sick of this music thing.

Honorable Mention: The National at Bonnaroo. For my money, one of the best live bands around.

Biggest disappointments.

-Iron & WIne at the First Unitarian Church, LA. Concerts at churches is becoming a big thing out here and this seemed like the perfect act for it. He started with half a set of his boring-ass, adult contemporary shit he's done the last couple albums, then went to the wonderful whispery vocals + acoustic guitar formula for the second half, then came out and washed that good taste from my mouth with another dose of big-band boring. I broke up with him for good after that show.

-Mark Lanegan at the Troubadour. Doing mostly covers from his 2013 release, he just sorta punched the clock and bored the hell out of the entire room. Only show I walked out of in 2k13. He's so cool, Lanegan, I was really bummed.

-Sufjan Stevens at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. I love Sufjan, but this was a project where he wrote and presented a bunch of songs about the solar system. Backed by the excellent Bryce Dessner from the National, the music was pretty, I guess, but completely sleep-inducing. Best nap I had all year.

This was also the first year I bought tickets for shows and completely or partially blew them off. I'm getting older. I was tired.

Totally agree. I had seen his "Age of Adz" show (maybe the best show of 2012) and was hugely disappointed by the solar system show (at BAM).
