We moved to a nu state and our insurance rates spiked, so we're shopping around. Who covers you? Are you happy with them? Why or why not?

(I realize New Jerseyans are in a special place when it comes to auto insurance.)

Geico

Are we happy?, we think we are paying too much but when we shopped around the other night we quickly saw that they were the best deal.

Re: Who's got you covered?

state farm for home and auto. happy enough with them i suppose. had one claim thus far, housewise, with no issue.

as far as auto claims go, i've been hit by all state users, and their insurance was pretty easy to deal with.

why is New Jersey a special place? (besides the idiocy of taking points from out of state infractions. I knew I should've kept my NY license) I think my wife takes care of this, which means I'm not positive..

I think Progressive. I think we need to look into other places though, not real happy with the rates.

Doesn't your friend vouch for Progressive?

Re: Who's got you covered?

Well, sure, and it's been very lucrative for her. If she wants to get me a friends-and-family rate, I'm all ears.

New Jerseyans, historically, have had abnormally high auto insurance rates.

Allstate dropped us, so eff them.

It's because they let them take road tests in parking lots.

Re: Who's got you covered?

I shifted from State Farm to Progressive about a year and a half ago and saved a lot of money. Between auto and home, it was more than $2,000 per year in savings.

Re: Who's got you covered?

GEICO for auto (just got a new car and stayed with them). Had a car stolen about 12 years ago and they were really helpful.

Can't remember the home insurance.

GEICO's was good and prompt about addressing damage we suffered to our car during Irene last year.

Re: Who's got you covered?

we're into the Gecko. Most if not all of the other brand-name insurers want nothing to do with on-street parkers. plus the body shop around the corner is now an authorized Geico repair shop so when i do get my mirrors knocked off its no biggie.

Re: Who's got you covered?

confirmed by guessing wife's login. Progressive for two cars, Allstate for the apartment.

I believe Progressive pulled some crap with changing our policy mid-half and it messed with our payments and caused us to be late. I believe they rectified it and refunding it but it was still annoying.

I guess I was wrong. Everything seemed to point to NJ giving you 2 points on your license for moving infractions out of state, but there is no record of my moving violating in Vegas back in February on my policy.

I get these discounts and still pay an arm and a leg. And I want to buy a house in this state? *sigh*

Re: Who's got you covered?

My wife has IDS Property Casualty Insurance Company which is a division of Ameriprise. I know this because she is calling them right now because someone hit and run her parked car on the street this morning. I'll let you know how things work out with them.

A neighbor says he's had good luck with Liberty Mutual.

Re: Who's got you covered?

I haven't compared rates in a while, but we've had Allstate since the '80s and whenever we had an issue they were very good. I got sued as a result of an accident in '96, and I felt like I had their total support.

Our daughter just got her own car this summer, and she used our broker and got a better rate than anywhere else, but I'm sure that was influenced by our long standing as a customer, as well as the fact that her car was replacing one that was under our insurance.

Re: Who's got you covered?

We have Allstate for both home and auto. And after rolling (and totalling) my jeep in a snowstorm two years ago, my rates didn't go up significantly. And the were very responsive when we had storm damage to the house several years ago. While you can do a lot of business with them online, you also get then personal attention of a local agent. (anecdotal stuff follows. Mine is a nice guy who is a big Kansas City baseball fan. We had a nice baseball chat this morning when I paid my bill.)
Back to topic.
If you have both with them, you get a 10% discount. But rates vary widely based on the area in which you live.
Don't know whether or not other insurers offer a multi-policy discount, so shop around.

Re: Who's got you covered?

Ameriprise. They're independent these days, but when I joined them they were a part of Amex. The price was competitive and they provided very good service. When I hit a deer a couple of years ago, I called them from my cell. They first asked if anyone was hurt, then provided the information I needed. When the time came, they paid all but the deductible with little fuss (or, what fuss there was was handled by the repair shop).

The repair shop had a sign saying to avoid Progressive and GEICO. I didn't ask, but evidently one reason why they're so cheap is that they don't pay the entire claim.

Re: Who's got you covered?

Have Allstate too since I was a pup for auto. Travelers for
home. Travelers tried to get us to combo and it wasn't worth
the switch. We've had two claims recently, a blown out SUV
window in the back by a piece of furniture and KB had a minor
run in with a deer and Allstate totally rocked service-wise.
