Hi Bermuda x2!

One of my fav threads round here... ABNS 2k13 loose travel itinerary:

Moto road trip in a couple weeks, down the coast towards Mex, cut across the southern AZ desert to Tombstone. Up to PHX to watch my beloved Clippers beat the holy hell from the Suns, then on to Sedona/Flag to freeze our balls off, then back to LA. I waste $$ on lots of stupid shit, but my beautiful bike was not one of those wastes. #sorry401K #wildhogs #growupalreadydudeseriously

Next month -> COLOMBIA. Flight to Medellín booked. Plans cooking... Very stoked.

July -> Northern INDIA?? Looking solid as of today.

Where are YOU going?

Lookin' like a three-week whirlwind of a working vacation in May-June: 9 countries in 22 days.

Sweden Norway Denmark Germany Poland Latvia Lithuania Estonia Finland

Then a family vacation to...be decided.

There will be. I'm very excited, but super-anxious. Leading 15-18 college aged students through the Baltics can be intimidating. Am considering flying the family to meet me in Europe at the conclusion, and doing Spain and/or France. Possibly Morocco.

Re: Vacations 2013

It's 50/50 that I accompany my wife's family, who couldn't make it when we went last year though they were supposed to, to Germany again in May/June. It's mostly just be visiting family, in German, so while it's nice it's not quite what I look forward to on vacation. We'll probably toss a different city onto the end or beginning of the trip (Paris? Belgium?) for a couple of days just to take advantage of already flying there, but this year is the quest to buy a house and right now nothing else beyond maybe a weekend in the Poconos is in the cards.

Re: Vacations 2013

We blew the budget on two weeks in Italy and a new kitchen last year, so this year is a bit more low key - a week in Florida (first half on the beach in Ft. Lauderdale, second half in St. Lucie). We will, as always, go to the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in the beginning of August, though some might think that more of an endurance event and less a vacation.

I am also going to Austin for a conference in April, and my wife will be joining me. I will have at least three nights free to take in the music and general craziness down there. I know a few folks who live in Austin, and they will set us up as far as where to go. One of them will not be there, as she is touring the east coast at that time and will be playing at our house the Sunday after we get back.

Sounds like a good time.

My daughter went to school in Asheville for a couple of years. When she left I partially felt sorry for myself since I would have no more excuse to go there.

I'm off to San Francisco on March 31 for a week to visit that same daughter. Side trip up to Mendocino and Sonoma.

I went to New Orleans a few weeks ago, had a swell time.

Might cram in another trip in June as for work reasons it looks like the second half of the year is out vacation-wise.

I come back and the Mets make trades, moves, win a doubleheader. I should stay away more often.

Guadeloupe is beautiful. Very little English spoken there and other than at the airport I saw no Americans. Food was mostly excellent. Incredible snorkling, beautiful near empty beaches.

How do we decide where to go? It depends. We had heard about Guadeloupe from friends and since I know that the second half of this year is going to be a tough one at work I thought it might be good to have a chill-out kind of vacation.

Re: Vacations 2013

In the midst of two weeks of working vcation in California. Spent last week in San Diego for a work related conference. Conference ended on Saturday evening with a celebration of food, drink, and music aboard the USS Midway. Sunday my wife and I rented a car drove from San Diego to Cambria, Ca where we spent 2 wonderful days relaxing and touring Hearst Castle. Today we drove the Pacific Coast Highway from Cambria to Pacifica. Stopped and took in the Monterey Aquarium along the way. Taking a Catamaran tour of SF Bay tomorrow. Unfortunately, Bay Area Transit (BART) went on strike yesterday, so traffic and parking are more difficult than usual. Plan to take a day trip to Napa/Sonoma later in the week.

Any suggestions of must see attractions in the Bay area? Hope to ride a cable car and take in the Golden Gate Bridge

Re: Vacations 2013

I like Cioppino's on Fisherman's Wharf. If you go there, order the cioppino; it's kind of a tomato soup loaded with seafood. They ask you if you want it with the shells. I say yes, it's a more rustic and traditional dining experience, although it's also a hell of a lot messier.

The Alcatraz Island tour is interesting. And if you want a nice scenic walk, and some exercise as well, you can climb the stairs to the top of Telegraph Hill and the base of Coit Tower.

Re: Vacations 2013

San Francisco is great, you can't really go wrong. Check out the ocean? Alcatraz is as expected, neat though, neat at night as well. Ghiradelli square? yum. North Beach has good italian food (Fior D'italia claims it's the first italian restaurant in america, and was really good.) and there's a Rogue bar.

Golden Gate park is nice, and you can usually find a joint too!

Baseball. Always baseball. I always recommend baseball. Giants aren't home 'till Friday. A's play the cubs until then, but without BART it might be trickier. Plus the O.co coliseum sucks, the hot dogs make baseball writers sick for days, and they don't have garlic fries.

sourdough bread. sourdough pizza. anchor steam beer.

Re: Vacations 2013

Well, I lived there for quite a while and my daughter lives there now so I return every year.

I'll second Golden Gate Park -- check out the buffalos; Mexican food in the Mission; the market/food stalls at the ferry building are great. Plenty of music clubs. Go to the Beanbag Cafe. My daughter works there. Not a fan of Pier 39 (other than the seals). The Cliff House used to be a great place to get a drink but is terribly overpriced and the food is terrible. No excuse for eating terrible food there.

Re: Vacations 2013

I'll second a number of things listed here - Golden Gate Bridge, Telegraph Hill & Coit Tower (fascinating New Deal-era murals inside), Golden Gate Park, cable cars.

My wife & I had a delicious meal at L'Osteria Del Forno (http://www.losteriadelforno.com/) in North Beach, but be warned that it is tiny so you may have a long wait.

The Castro Theatre is a classic cinema with performances on a Wurlitzer organ before movies.

Airlines don't issue physical tickets anymore. (Although maybe they do if you request it?) And you generally can't get a boarding pass until 24 hours before the flight, if you opt for the print-at-home feature.

Hopefully the expedite thing will work out (and I suspect it will) and you won't have to go down to the final day, which would be pretty stressful!

Cooperstown is great. Fboy and I did the Baseball HOF on a federal holiday a few years back, a day where he and I were off from work/school (Veterans' Day perhaps?). We got there right when it opened and had the HOF/Museum more or less to ourselves for the better part of two hours.

Re: Vacations 2013

So we just realized today that the Mets' trip to to the Dbaggs in April coincides with the week of Lunchpail's spring break so we're looking at a road trip to the Grand Canyon and the BoB then.

I've been to the Dbaggs games but never to GC; been 20 years for Wifey.

Early plan is to backpack/hike down and camp for a night. We probably don't want to do more than that if we're schlepping all our stuff (including food), which we'll hafta do, I think (?). Also,I would guess we would hafta rent the stuff we'll need, I guess (packs, tent, etc). Anyone done this trip recently who can advise? More generally, can anyone give an idea of how much time we should plan there beyond the 2 days/1 nites of hiking? Thanks!

Re: Vacations 2013

Sounds like you want to hike to the river and camp? I've gone to the river and back each of the last 2 years. Both times I did down & up in the same day (because I didn't want to lug all the shit), but that's a pretty tough round-trip. I've never camped down at Phantom Ranch, but I think they mule down a lot of supplies, so you can be pretty minimal in your packing.

I really like going down South Kaibab trail (it's very direct, no water, no shade, but the downhill moves really quickly). The views are just gorgeous. At the river, you can camp at Phantom Ranch. Lots of shade, bathrooms, plenty of water. Rafting trips take off from here, it's really cool.

Bright Angel trail leaves from the other side of Phantom Ranch and that's where I like to go back up. It's considered by many to be the most scenic trail and it really is phenomenal. It's a tough hike (like 9 mi back to the rim from the river, 16 mi total), but there's fresh water stops along the way and a good amount of shade. I don't know if you were planning on bringing Lunchpail, cause that sounds like it's probably too much to have the little dude try, but I don't know of any camp spots that aren't at the bottom. Doesn't mean they don't exist, though. There is really decent camping at the top, though. Mather Campground is clean and you get a decent amount of space for a hugely popular national park and can do shorter treks down part of the trail and then back up.

Another place I've been dying to get to at the GC is Havasupi Falls. Check this fuckin place out: http://www.havasupaifalls.net/waterfalls.html

Re: Vacations 2013

Thanks Seo-y.

We're open to considering shorter hikes cuz the Pail would likely come along. There also also guided hikes but they're like $800 a person and the guidance doesn't seem essential.

Re: Vacations 2013

eh, we got a late start planning this Arizona gig and looks like we're gonna hafta call it off. Plus we're broke.

Metcation plans now zeroing in on Milwaukee last weekend of July. I would imagine that's one of the better times of year to visit the Dairy State, thinking of maybe doing the Midwest lake-cabin summer thing but also probably Chicago too. Monk? We need guidance!
