Comics in 2013 (and 2014 too!)

What would it be like if this is the first Mark Trail you ever saw?

Maybe it is your first. And if so you would ask... What the hell is going on? Who's the hero? Who's the villain? Why's the monkey talking? Is his sentence to remain unfinished until tomorrow? Are all four figures aligned against each other?

Of course, seasoned readers will know, facial hair in Mark Trail means your salad days are coming to an end.

I would like to renew my call for Gasoline Alley to be put out of its misery. They just recently concluded a story in which a man tried to marry a mule.

It used to be a charming strip, many years ago. Now it's just abysmally stupid.

Re: Comics in 2013

Does this Beetle Bailey strip make any sense to you?

Do women often offer to comb their co-worker's hair? Does such activity have to be done out of sight of the boss? Is there any interpretation to this other than The Comic Curmudgeon's suggestion that Beetle Bailey is trying (and failing) to make sexy lesbian innuendo?

I'm just wondering what joke they were trying to make.

Re: Comics in 2013

Who's the blondie? I guess it's Ms. Buxley, but she usually wears black, longer hair, and has her eyes half-lidded in her cool sultriness.

Yeah, I don't get the joke, but that's more typical than not with Beetle Bailey.

I didn't realize that Red and Rover was set in the past until today's strip, which showed them watching Walter Cronkite and comparing him to Captain Kangaroo.

At first I thought Mark was responding to Cherry's survival of camping with a city girl, escaping from a forest fire, and an attack by a grizzly by touching her wittle nose. But in color I see she is touching her own nose, even weirder.

Re: Comics in 2013

I think I've said it before, but it bears repeating: Mort Walker and his studio are absolutely horrible at drawing animals.

The monkeys in yesterday's strip looked like cats with beaks. The dog in today's strip is supposed to look silly, but it's still poorly drawn.

Not that the human characters look all that great, but the animals? Yeesh!

I dunno. If all comic strip characters were suddenly single and I had to marry , and Alice Mitchell (née Johnson) gave me the cold shoulder, I would start making inquiries about Lois Flagston (née Bailey).

Comic drunks in the funny pages:

General Halftrack (Beetle Bailey)
Bung (The Wizard of Id)
Leroy (The Lockharts) (probably more of a problem drinker)
Thirsty Thurston (Hi & Lois)
Most of the whiskey swilling journalists plus the Ted Kennedy-lookalike politician (Shoe).
Frank and Ernest.

Surprised I forgot Andy Capp. He doesn't run in many American papers, but I know he's still out there, because once a year I will spot a luncheonette sporting Andy Capp-endorsed merchandise. Pub fries, to be specific.

I wonder how much of an endorsement from Andy Capp is worth.

Life with Archie. Death with Archie.

Comic book character Archie to be killed off

LOS ANGELES — Not even Archie Andrews is immortal in the world of comics.

Archie Comics announced Tuesday that the famous comic book character will heroically sacrifice himself while saving the life of a friend in a July installment of "Life with Archie," a comic book series that tells the story of grown-up renditions of Archie and his Riverdale gang.

"We've been building up to this moment since we launched 'Life with Archie' five years ago and knew that any book that was telling the story of Archie's life as an adult had to also show his final moment," Archie Comics publisher and co-CEO Jon Goldwater said in a statement.

Archie's final moments will be detailed in "Life with Archie" No. 36, while issue No. 37 will jump forward a year and focus on his friends Jughead, Betty, Veronica and Reggie honoring the legacy of their red-headed pal.

Archie first appeared in comics in 1941 and went on to become a colorful icon of wholesomeness.

In recent years, Archie Comics has tackled such issues as gay characters and the zombie apocalypse in Archie's fictional hometown of Riverdale. However, Archie himself won't need to rise from the grave. The freckle-faced character will still be alive and well in other series.
