Yyyyyyyyep, though I've been playing the equivalent of clutch-and-grab, early-'90s-Knicks-defense-type Scrabble for weeks now. (1532)

In, although I have no idea what my rating is. (FINE, I'll go download the stupid Scrabble app.)

I'll give it a whirl to give a top seed an early KABOOMS!

Yes, please post your ratings also as I may not be FB friends with every participant. I am rocking out at 1546.

The Scrabble app I have on the android phone doesn't work for me, I can only play on a desktop.

Mine works fine on Facebook -- you have to go to the menu and log into Facebook from the Scrabble app, then it should load your games. Unfortunately, I can't get my Scrabble games to sync on my Nexus 7 tablet.
|
Ceetar Jan 18 2013 11:43 AM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
i stopped using the app because it sucked. Maybe I should redownload it and see if my fancy jelly bean makes it run smoother.

the price was right, so I bought the whole woman. failed to login to the app though, and I realize that it's possibly this app that was exploited to reset my EA/Origins password that happened a month ago and I couldn't figure out how something I never used was compromised. Of course now I can't figure out the password and their webpage is down. smooth.

I'm in...even though, as some of you know, I am horrible at Scrabble. Still, it doesn't stop me from trying.
|
Edgy MD Jan 18 2013 02:37 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
1411. Hopefully it'll go up after Willets' next move, unless he pulls one out and punches me in the eye.

Edgy MD Jan 18 2013 02:56 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |

So far we have 12. I would love to get four more in and have a straight up 16 player tourney.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Jan 19 2013 06:14 AM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
I play with a non-cpfer but Mets blogger on fb, I could invite?
|
Fman99 Jan 19 2013 08:21 AM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
|
I dunno, there's a smack talk element at play that I think is best served locally within the CPF. There are some 12 team double elimination brackets that also work. Let's give it the rest of the weekend and if no one else signs up I will align the brackets.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Jan 19 2013 08:26 AM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |

Nymr83 Jan 19 2013 08:55 AM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |

You could always ask your blogging friend to join the Pool.
|
Swan Swan H Jan 19 2013 09:50 AM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
What NYMR said - if you need more to get to 16 I'll play. I never Scrabbled on FB, but I do play Words.
|
Edgy MD Jan 19 2013 12:56 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
Sheesh. Get the blogger to register at the Crane Pool for the purpose of smack talk, and then by the end of the tournament, we will have our tendrils around his or her ankles. He or she will never get out.

Yeah and wouldn't I pick this weekend to tank like three straight games, my rating has dropped 20 points as well. I will seed it based on the rankings at the time that I do the brackets.

Fman99 Jan 20 2013 08:24 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
OK, it's go time. These are the current standings, ELO-wise, which we will use for seeding as of this moment.

Ceetar Jan 21 2013 07:22 AM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
Unless I'm missing it, there isn't a way to name the games anymore.
|
TransMonk Jan 21 2013 08:36 AM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
|
Yeah, I'm not sure how to do this. I'm currently in the middle of another ass-kicking by metsmarathon. Once we complete this game (I have 6 tiles left), our rematch can be the tourney game.
|
Fman99 Jan 21 2013 09:55 AM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
|
I noticed that as well. I guess we'll just go by the next game you start against the opponent in your bracket, knowing that many of you have several games going at any given time (I've been playing LWFS, MM, TM, JCL and Ceetar non stop for a couple of months now). Until the tourney plays out I will be less active with the rest of you, trying to focus on not losing my first two matches. I am now friends on FB with Smg and our match has started, deadlocked at 26-26. Maybe the easiest way to identify your match as a CPF tourney competition is to use the in-game chat.
|
Ceetar Jan 21 2013 10:01 AM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
Crushing Kong 44-21 so far. of course I've had an extra turn, but..semantics.
|
Fman99 Jan 22 2013 07:12 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
First result is in, and I am glad I made this a double elimination tourney as Smg hands me my ass, 397-307, and drops a bingo on me in the process. He moves up to play Seawolf, while I await the loser of the Willets vs Kong/Ceetar 2nd round match.
|
smg58 Jan 22 2013 07:25 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
And so the battle of Stony Brook begins...
|
metsmarathon Jan 22 2013 07:50 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
i'm trying my damnedest to fend off a 12-5 upset against monk. he's got a 125-121 lead with 48 tiles in the bag, and the board is a sprawling mess with not a whole lot of hooks to be had.
|
Fman99 Jan 22 2013 07:57 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
|
Likewise. I find the game to be one of streaks for me -- I will go 2-3 weeks where I feel unbeatable and the bingos all jump out of my rack, and then have the opposite run of bad luck, V's and U's, and I started one of the latter runs late last week. It's all good -- after all, I can still win this thing!

Tight freaking board. Tight. Tight. Tighter than, uh, well...hey, you'll figure out a good simile. I'm up 209-130, but plenty of good letters still not played. 54 tiles on the board and we haven't seen a K, Q, X, Z, S, or blank yet.

I'm in a serious funk right now. I ripped off a 12-game win streak on WWF, but now I'm getting whacked left and right. I just lost a game by over 250 points. Kong's going to hit me just at the right time.

Fman99 Jan 27 2013 09:12 AM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |

Kase - as the 10 seed you should challenge Seawolf to a match - this gives you the advantage since you get the first play and the double word score that goes with it.

|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Jan 28 2013 04:35 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
Not complaining, but that bracket is weird. 1 & 2 should be on a collision course to meet in the winner's final, not semifinals.
|
Fman99 Jan 28 2013 07:24 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
|
Yeah, I think that's my bad, I slotted the bye teams wrong. Sorry about that.
|
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Jan 28 2013 07:50 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
With 5 moves each down and 40 tiles left in the sack, a series of point-seizing RAPINES have given me the temporary lead in a 197-159 barnburner over TM.

Kong76 Jan 28 2013 08:36 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
This is why I suck, have never heard that word before.

Fman99 Jan 29 2013 04:32 AM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
Thanks for the update. MetsMarathon, you should now challenge JCL to your match in the loser's bracket, while Chad86 waits to challenge the Willets/Ceetar winner.

I also fear a matchup with LWFS because he routinely kicks my as.

Chad Ochoseis Jan 29 2013 03:21 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |

Funny, that's why I fear a matchup with you. Although somehow, I think I'm around .500 with LWFS. Will challenge you momentarily if I can get my 4G going.

|
Edgy MD Jan 29 2013 03:56 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |

It's even funnier, because here I am rooting for Transmonk, but all a victory by him will do is knock an angry LWFS into a matchup with me in the loser's bracket.
|
Fman99 Jan 29 2013 05:56 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
Updated once again. I await your challenge in the loser's bracket, Ceetar.
|
TransMonk Jan 29 2013 06:35 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
|||
LWFS was up early, but I have pulled ahead 284-253 with 17 tiles left. I just played TSARS on a triple word score and a double letter on the Z. Those 69 points saved my ass. LWFS routinely beats me. I'd like to think my lead can last, but I know better.
|
Edgy MD Jan 29 2013 07:47 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
Go LWFS!

John Cougar Lunchbucket Jan 29 2013 08:19 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |

|
metsmarathon Jan 29 2013 09:17 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
i was mostly just hoping for an I to make ORIGINAL. TRIGONAL fell together pretty quickly. it came after my second exchange of the game - not something i do very often, but i figured i needed to swing for the fences to win. i had, iirc, RIOLNII or something like that, and swapped out some Is.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Jan 29 2013 09:23 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
click the Dictionary, then there's a tab on top to view the pbp. I of course wound up with your swapped out i's, forcing me to play 7-point MINI rather than trading them in at that late hour.

Did we do a Scrabble Challenge last year? I was trying to figure who who the reigning champion is but the most recent one I could find was from 2010.

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Feb 01 2013 05:17 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |

Yes, because a lot can happen in 17 tiles... like a 4-point gain, sucka! I get boxed in during the endgame, and Monk takes it, 366-339. Good work, sir.

smg58 Feb 05 2013 05:42 AM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
The game is started, Willets!
|
Mets – Willets Point Feb 05 2013 08:33 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
smg58, the breakout star of this tournament, is currently handing me my ass 229-171. I'm barely hanging on and having a lot of vowel problems.
|
Frayed Knot Feb 06 2013 06:21 AM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
Irritable vowel syndrome?
|
smg58 Feb 06 2013 07:54 AM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
|
Willets got a bingo to get back into it. I'm clinging to a lead, but neither of us has good tiles right now.
|
Edgy MD Feb 06 2013 08:47 AM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
If 229-171 is an ass-handing, I don't know how you'd describe the violations that marathon is visiting upon me.
|
Ceetar Feb 06 2013 08:50 AM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
going back and forth with marathon down 22 with 15 tiles left. I'm currently staring at a damn bingo with nowhere to play it and it's pissing me off.
|
Kong76 Feb 06 2013 09:17 AM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
Hate that
|
Mets – Willets Point Feb 06 2013 10:24 AM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |

I was dealing with racks with 1 or fewer vowels. Then I got one good rack and played a bingo that got me back in the game. Since that time I've had a surplus of vowels, 5 or more on each rack.
|
Kong76 Feb 06 2013 10:34 AM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
Hate that too
|
Ceetar Feb 06 2013 12:51 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
metsmarathon falls 353-352. I await transmonk's challenge.

seawolf17 Feb 06 2013 01:04 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
Our 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6 seeds are all out! Travesty. I demand a recount.
|
Mets – Willets Point Feb 06 2013 01:22 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
smg58 and I are tied at 356 with no tiles left in the bag. It's going to be a tense endgame.

metsmarathon Feb 06 2013 03:49 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |

after my early bingo, i didn't get a single decent rack. i should'v swapped out my tiles at least three times, but instead played for paltry points. i thought for sure putting that I out there just before the end with me holding the Q (which i'd picked up just two plays before) was going to hand me teh game, but alas i had 5 points on my rack...

You appear to already be friends.

Fman99 Feb 06 2013 03:56 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
Did we get official word that SMG beat Willets? I see Seawolf saying he did but neither of them have reported that fact.

I always forget to read the end of the board for the big letters at least. (Not that I had a choice, I had too many I's, but maybe could've placed 'em better)

The reports of my demise have been exaggerated although I could be in the losers' bracket shortly.

smg58 Feb 06 2013 06:00 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
The ball's in Willets' court, down 8 with two tiles left.

Smg58 wins 386-385. Devastating! Congrats to smg58 for being the last undefeated competitor.

Nope, I didn't report on Willets' demise, just those of us who were ousted from the losers' bracket already.

35 tiles to go, and I'm clinging to a 245-193 lead, thanks mostly to dropping some JETSOMS in the beginning. Board appears to be shrinking a bit.

Chad Ochoseis Mar 03 2013 01:42 PM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |

That was indeed something of a grind. LWFS was winning by about 80 towards the end of the game. I had a blank on my rack and kept trying to hang on to just the right tiles for a successful Hail Mary bingo that never happened. Good game. Though, yeah, grinding.

Ceetar - Willets tied at 295 with 3 tiles left in the bag. I feel like I've been playing like crap all game so the only way I can still be in this game is that Ceetar is somehow getting even worse racks than I am.

good game. you usually beat me so this is especially sweet. and I get a new friend out of it! Someone 'friend suggest' smg for me. My challenge right? The clincher was dropping that sY in to make sEXY for 37 points on expiring racks I think. We finished 375-332.

smg58 Mar 27 2013 07:12 AM Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge |
