CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge

Fman99
Jan 17 2013 03:13 PM

Sign up here -- I will organize this.

Seeding will be determined by your "ELO" rating as per the Scrabble/Facebook page, and this may or may not be affected by how many Jeff Lynne songs you can name.

Single elimination, bracket style tourney. Lower seed will start all games with the "CPF Tourney Match" title and therefore get the first play.

I am in. Who else?

Mine works fine on Facebook -- you have to go to the menu and log into Facebook from the Scrabble app, then it should load your games.

Unfortunately, I can't get my Scrabble games to sync on my Nexus 7 tablet.

I dunno, there's a smack talk element at play that I think is best served locally within the CPF.

There are some 12 team double elimination brackets that also work. Let's give it the rest of the weekend and if no one else signs up I will align the brackets.

5. Metsmarathon (1506)
6. Fman (1474)

8. Chad Ocho (1463)
9. Edgy (1436)
10. Kong (1215)
11. Smg (1200)
12. Transmonk (1165)

Brackets and opening matchups are posted below. Top four players get an opening round bye. Smg -- please shoot me your real name via PM please, I don't know if we are Facebook friends currently. If you're not friends with your opponent, shoot me a PM and I will get you their info as I am friends with the other 10 participants in this.

Please use "CPF Challenge" in your game titles to distinguish these games from any other Scrabble matches you may be currently participating in. Lower seeds should challenge the higher ones in order to get the opening round DW play. Please post final results as well as any smack talk in this thread.

GOOD LUCK!

I noticed that as well. I guess we'll just go by the next game you start against the opponent in your bracket, knowing that many of you have several games going at any given time (I've been playing LWFS, MM, TM, JCL and Ceetar non stop for a couple of months now). Until the tourney plays out I will be less active with the rest of you, trying to focus on not losing my first two matches.

I am now friends on FB with Smg and our match has started, deadlocked at 26-26.

Maybe the easiest way to identify your match as a CPF tourney competition is to use the in-game chat.

Likewise. I find the game to be one of streaks for me -- I will go 2-3 weeks where I feel unbeatable and the bingos all jump out of my rack, and then have the opposite run of bad luck, V's and U's, and I started one of the latter runs late last week. It's all good -- after all, I can still win this thing!

Tight freaking board. Tight. Tight. Tighter than, uh, well...hey, you'll figure out a good simile.

I'm up 209-130, but plenty of good letters still not played. 54 tiles on the board and we haven't seen a K, Q, X, Z, S, or blank yet.

Ochoseis has sent me to the loser's bracket.

He opened with a bingo, ATELIER, but I fought it off with a variety of stack plays utilizing the Ms, Ws, and Hs, not to mention Z and X, and eventually opened a 40-point lead. Then the board got tight, I played small trying to lose a Q, while Chad gathered in the other blank and all 4 of the Ss. Leading 246-194 after 10 moves, he buttfucked me with SPAY (47), FLUIDS (46) and RINK (62) back to back to back, all on triple-words, the latter extending LUTZ to KLUTZ, and has an insurmountable 368-327 lead with 1 tile left for each of us.

LWFS was up early, but I have pulled ahead 284-253 with 17 tiles left. I just played TSARS on a triple word score and a double letter on the Z. Those 69 points saved my ass.

I'm out, lost 417-401 to marathon in a back and forth battle.

He pulled a wtf triple-line bingo TRIGONAL out his ass, which effed up my game and goaded me into a dumb mistake, I played a parallel AX vs. a less-lucrative crossword JINX for the extra 12 points or whatever it got me after that triple. He then scored even bigger on the X, which to me was the Miller Lite turning point of the game, even though we traded a couple more leads still.

Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge

Willets ate the Q, but it didn't taste that bad as he won the game anyway. 360-358.

I was down by 100ish in the middle of the game, but came back late with VARIANT for 69. Then counted tiles and tried to engineer the endgame. And did pretty well at it. But enough to topple the mighty Willets? No. No way.

Great game, Willets.

I was biting my nails all through the endgame as Chad got his late bingo and then nibbled away at my lead. I knew I was stuck with the Q and

One bingo (his early PRETREAT).

I won't win this tournament now, but I have a feeling I'll take home the Ugliest Games consolation trophy.

Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge

I had no idea THOLE was good.

We had a thread of Metly Scrabble words once, but I think it was the pre-THOLE era. The coolness of the already supercool UMDB would be enhanced by a list of Met names that are legal for Scrabble play.

Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge

Ceetar - Willets tied at 295 with 3 tiles left in the bag. I feel like I've been playing like crap all game so the only way I can still be in this game is that Ceetar is somehow getting even worse racks than I am.

I've been dealing with some low-vowel situations. That well placed ZOA was a good counter for PAStURES

You don't play a tile for 24 hours, I'm gonna nudge you. That's just how it is. Snooze > nudge.

There are a few tiles left on our racks, but Ceetar has effectively won.

good game. you usually beat me so this is especially sweet. and I get a new friend out of it! Someone 'friend suggest' smg for me. My challenge right?

The clincher was dropping that sY in to make sEXY for 37 points on expiring racks I think.

We finished 375-332.

Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge

I think it's my challenge because I'm the lower seed. But either way I'll need a friend request. My name is Scott Gianelli, so find me and we'll get started.

I'm assuming I was the 58th person with the initials SMG to set up an e-mail account at Columbia, so I got the address smg58@columbia.edu. It's since become my default ID whenever I've needed one.

I'm pretty sure all of us have mentioned smg's SCRABBLE dominance in this thread.

Re: CPF 2013 Scrabble Challenge

I'm up 271-196 with 29 tiles to go, but a run of really lame draws has given Ceetar the opportunity to get back in.

I don't remember a 3.71 mark on the outfield wall.
Was that some sort of weird metric shit they were trying out one year?

441-283 is the final score. A couple of big words late put it away.
