I Wonder About Eddie B.
Player: Ed Bressoud
Song: Wonderful World (Don't Know Much) by Sam Cooke (with a touch of the James Taylor version)

Don't know much about Ed Bressoud
Don't know if he had five tools
Don't know if he got along with Wes
Don't know if he talked to the press

But I do know he was from L.A.
But I never got to see him play
And so I wonder about Eddie B.

Don't know if he liked to hit and run
Don't know if he could lay down a bunt
Don't know if he choked up on the bat
Don't know lots of little things like that

But I did learn how to say his name
But I never saw him in a game,
That's why I wonder about Eddie B.

Now I like to think that I'm a Mets student
I've got a database.
But whenever I click on his web page, baby
I just see his numbers and his face.

Don't know how he took his leads off bases
Did he make the pitchers turn their faces?
Don't know nothin' 'bout how he threw the ball
Know almost nothin' 'bout Eddie at all
So it's Ed who has been on my mind
Because he played before my time
And so I wonder about Eddie B.

Don't know much about Ed Bressoud
Don't know where he went to school
Don't know what he did right or wrong
Don't know why I even wrote this song.

But I do know that he was a Met
But was he a guy you can't forget?
And so I wonder about Eddie B.

la ta ta ta ta ta ta (Ed Bressoud)
la ta ta ta (went to school)
la ta ta ta ta ta ta (right or wrong)
la ta ta ta (wrote this song)

But Ed played for my favorite team,
And for that he does deserve esteem,
That's why I wonder about Eddie B.

An Orsulak Game

In the first year of the nineties
The Mets still seemed to have life
There was HoJo, two Kevins, and Darryl, and Gregg
But then the speculation was rife
See, Gooden and Sid, they had gone through a skid
And Cashen had traded the farm
He cut Johnson loose, and had cooked the Mets goose
I recall now my state of alarm

’Cuz I’ve been up to Flushing for an Orsulak game
I heard grown men praying for rain
You needed programs… to remember the names
You don’t want to remember when you lose all those games
La, la, laaaa; la, la-la, la.
La, la, laaa; la.

After two years, of the nineties Mets
Darryl and Doc said Bye
After four years, we had to cancel our bets
On The Worst Team Money Could Buy
And if you made it to Shea, there were stories they say
Of a guy you could count on to try

’Cuz I’ve been up to Flushing for an Orsulak game
It was hard to sort out all the blame
In the nineties… how our heads hung with shame
’Cuz there were too few Mets who had much of a game
La, la, laaaa; la, la-la, la.
La, la, laaa; la.

When he signed in December of ninety-two
We figured he'd rarely play
Had a heck of arm, from the City of Charm
We'd start him maybe every sixth day
Then the Metly vet batters got injured and fatter
Like Bonilla, McReynolds, and Vince
Then the scrubbies were needed; it's a pattern repeated
I've seen it too many times since

You see, I've lived through the nineties and each Orsulak game
I thanked Jesus when Valentine came
He was a symbol… of an era of shame
And it's not quite fair how we've "Boisclair'ed" his name
La, la, laaaa; la, la-la, la.
La, la, laaa; la.

So here's to the faithful from those Orsulack games
You had your characters molded by pain
And you recall how his arm saved his first Metly game1
And he bowed out with a triple2 which cemented his fame
La, la, laaaa; la, la-la, la.
La, la, laaa; la.

1April 5, 1983. Play-by-play data isn't available. You'll have to trust me.

2October 1, 1995. This win completed a three-game season-ending sweep over the Braves — who otherwise finished 21 games ahead of the field — and pulled the Mets into a tie for a distant second-place finish.

Congraualtions. May the best man win.

What song, Edgy?

Number-one hit in 1973.

I'm not voting until we get Edgy's answer. The song title didn't jump off the screen.

In the meantime, we are entering a new era in song parodies.
Imbeded links and footnotes?
Really!
You guys are going for the jugular.

Here's the list I found:

1. Crocodile Rock - Elton John
2. Bad, Bad Leroy Brown - Jim Croce
3. Midnight Train To Georgia - Gladys Knight & The Pips
4. Brother Louie - Stories
5. Frankenstein - Edgar Winter Group
6. Will It Go Round In Circles? - Billy Preston
7. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John

is it Loyla?

Edgy DC
Dec 05 2005 01:20 PM

No.

People initially thought it was by Neil Young, and it displaced "Heart of Gold" at number one.

Valadius

Looking it up, it was a #1 hit in 1972, not '73. It stayed at #1 for three weeks.

Edgy DC
Dec 05 2005 01:31 PM

Sorry to throw you.

Other song facts:

  • America was formed in England by sons of US servicemen who were stationed there.

  • Lead singer Dewey Bunnell wrote this when he was 19. He based the images in the lyrics on things he saw while visiting the US.

  • This was the first single for America. They moved to the US a year later, after this became a hit.

  • "Horse" is slang for heroin. Some radio stations refused to play this because they thought it was about drugs. The band claims it is not.

  • This appears on a fifth-season episode of Friends called "The One With Joey's Big Break." In it, Joey and Chandler go on a road trip to Las Vegas (hence, "through the desert"). (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada)

Both are very nice. I don't really like the imbedded links and footnotes, however. I think the songs should stand by themselves without them. That's just me, others might think it clever.

Very nice. Been a while since our last battle and these are both very worthy entries.

The voting ain't getting easier.

Fantastic, both of you guys.

As much as I would love to say I lost to the eventual champ, I'm afraid I have to go with edgy on this one. Great job.

Nice job, guys

Very creative use of obscure players.

I think there is an insufficient number of "LA"s, however, edge

Didn't it go:

la-la laaaa, laaaa, la-la-la, la
la-la laaaa, laaaa, laaaaa

Zvon
Dec 05 2005 03:57 PM

I think my esteemed partner and I are unwilling to stoop to cybertwisting.

DD, I think maybe I only have the lead vocalist's LAs in there, and not the backup dude. Feel free to plug in your LAs.

My interview with the jazz DJ was cut off. Maybe I drove out of range.

I *like* not being told what the song is and then going to figure it out, crossword-puzzle style. That's part of the fun of seeing them the first time. That said, ease (or un-ease) of recognition is not what they ought to be judged on.

Why, I bumped into Weird Al Yankovich just the other day and he told me, "Son, lyrics are one thing. But without my accordian, I'd be nothing. Would you like to hear me play?"

I thanked him and moved on quickly. This is an accordian-free contest.

Valadius
Dec 06 2005 12:21 AM

Wasn't 13 the magic number earlier in the tournament?

Yancy Street Gang
Dec 06 2005 10:59 AM

Looks like I'm up 15-13 with two hours to go.

To answer Valadius, I mentioned a while back that 13 seemed to be enough to clinch a victory, but we've had a 16-15 (I think) since then. The later rounds seem to be getting more voters.

As for this contest, yesterday afternoon I was up 11-7, but when I went to bed last night I was down 13-12. As Wes Westrum might say, this one has been a cliff-dweller.

And the clock says 1:05. I guess I'm the winner.

Holy crap.

Very nice job by Edgy. I was tempted to vote for him, which would have swung this election.

Yancy wins, 15-14. Congrats. This was a justifiably close match.

Edgy DC
Dec 06 2005 01:07 PM

Congratulations.

I came back and back. Down 6-1 and 12-9, before finally pulling into a 13-12 lead. The magic number didn't work for me in the end.

Thank you, Scarlett!

When I reluctantly entered this little brouhaha I never figured I'd end up having to write five songs! My only goal was not to be too badly beaten in the first round.

I see you're already preparing for the finals ;)
