LaTroy Hawkins will likely be traded to the Mets, says USA Today's Bob Nightengale.
The Giants must think Tim Worrell is an upgrade. Assuming that he costs the Mets next to nothing, beyond his $4.35 million salary, he'd be a fine pickup. That salary hardly seems as excessive as it did five weeks ago.

I wonder what we'd give up?

Wasn't Hawkins banished form the Cubs becuase he couldn't even get along with the ultimate players manager Dusty Baker?

One of the rumors flying around now is Kaz Matsui for LaTroy Hawkins. Do it, Omar.

Not sure why the Jints would do that. Though, I'd much rather have Kaz start at 2nd than have Grudzy start and get to have the incredibly shaky LaTroy Hawkins on my team.

That would make sence, especially if as expected the Mets sign Grudzielanik Thursday.

LaTroy Hawkins would be a great name for a basketball player. Maybe the Giants could trade him to the Knicks instead.

The combo of Hawkins in the pen and Grudzy starting at second do not entice me to give up on Kazuo.

I'd do Matsui for Hawkins. Heilman and Hawkins would be a very nice set-up duo for Wagner.

I suppose if Omar can get the Giants to take on the salary it would be a good deal...with the savings he could sign Grudzy...remember FA players are wanting to play for the Mets for less than they could get elsewhere.

Muh. I wish Omar would stand up, bang his fist on the podium and say "Matsui is the second baseman, and we believe, a good one who while put into difficult circumstances, still has a lot of talent and the support of the organization, and seeing as we're in a tight spot here, we need him to give his best, so let's cheer for the damn guy. If he doesn't work out, we'll move on with the support of our minor leaguers and if we must, by trade. I personally like Ray Durham and can't figure why, if Matsui was such a bust, why I didn't get him last year. But for now, we're only get buttream ourselves down the road by signing Grudziealanek, who's 34, with a backloaded contract. I can see clearly now thanks to Joseph and his son Dr. Jeffrey DellaRusso! God bless! Good night, New York!!!"

If Heilman stays in the pen then there is definitely no need for Hawkins.

Dickshot, if Durham ever ever plays for the Mets he had better be brilliant.....I mean you've only been talking him up for two years IIRC...

Grudzy (and Lo Duca, for that matter) is definitely a case of the false truism that baseball executives work under when they seek to clear up a disappointing situation --- that the newer option is, by definition, the better option.

I agree that more defiance would be refreshing from a GM, but here's the thing: there are perhaps a dozen veteran options Minaya could pursue to play second. If Minaya stands pat, and only one of those 12 does clearly better than Matsui, that's the one the corps will bring up when they criticize Minaya for standing by the team's man.

]LaTroy Hawkins - R - Giants
LaTroy Hawkins has been traded from the Giants to the Orioles for Steve Kline, USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports.
This right after Nightengale said it was expected Hawkins would go to the Mets. Kline's career could turn around back in the NL, but we like this for the Orioles, assuming that Baltimore has no intention of allowing Hawkins to close. Between Hawkins and Chris Ray, the Orioles could do very well in the seventh and eighth innings. Someone like Todd Jones might be brought in to close.

Steve Kline just signed with the O's as a ML free agent.

Kline openly complained about Baltimore last season and wanted out, if I remember clearly. I'll look for an article.

- Maybe money can't buy happiness. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, new Orioles reliever Steve Kline is unhappy in Baltimore. "I'm miserable," Kline told the paper. "I'd like to rub that bottle and have that genie come out," he said, "and grant me a wish that I could go back." Kline inked a two-year $5.5 million deal in the off-season. Kline picked up the win on Wednesday night and apologized to his teammates before the game according to the Baltimore Sun

Giants get Kline for Hawkins
December 6, 2005

DALLAS (AP) -- Left-hander Steve Kline was acquired by the San Francisco Giants from the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday for right-hander LaTroy Hawkins and cash.

The swap of relievers followed the decision by left-handed reliever Scott Eyre to leave the Giants and sign with the Chicago Cubs.

"It's no secret that we were looking to add a left-handed reliever to our bullpen, and Steve Kline has a track record that is right up there with the top lefties in the game," Giants general manager Brian Sabean said.

Kline, who is 33, pitched under Giants manager Felipe Alou with the Montreal Expos and was 2-4 with a 4.28 ERA last season -- with a 2.83 ERA after the All-Star break. He has a 29-34 career record with 36 saves and a 3.40 ERA.

Hawkins, who turns 33 on Dec. 21, was acquired by the Giants on May 28 from the Chicago Cubs for right-handers Jerome Williams and David Aardsma. He went a combined 2-8 with six saves and a 3.83 ERA.

Last week, San Francisco signed right-hander Tim Worrell to a $4 million, two-year contract.

Why the hell were the Mets in talks over Jorge Julio instead of Kline, anyway?

I agree JD. So I guess we are both dreamers.

From what I read, the biggest problem with Matsui is that he'll be making 8 million bucks next year. And he has never played well enough to make that much. If the Mets give him the chance and he does have a good season, on the field as well as at the bat, the Mets would look good. They signed him for all that mooolah in the 1st place.
But if they stick with him and he's a bust, they look ohhhh so bad.

Omar may decide he's not worth the chance to even have an average 2nd basemans type of season at 8mill.
It may simply come down to the money.

He knows what hes gonna get for a million with Grudzy:
if healthy all season
150 plus hits
50 plus RBI
.270 plus average

good fielding too....the guy turned 108 DPs with StLoo last yr.

I wish Matsui well and would begrudge him the chance at 2nd for the Mets next season, but more and more I dont think thats gonna happen.

If Minaya can get someone else to take most of that salary or upgrade at another important position, he's gonna do it.

Good question. I think Kline has more upside than Hawkins at this point, and the Mets remain thin beyond Wagner from the lefty side. I don't think having a lefty for a closer mitigates the need for good lefty setup people. I guess, since there really aren't that many options out there, that we have to hope Ring or Hamulack steps up. There was another guy we just got, but he didn't look very promising.
