Burnett scores $55 million, five-year deal with Jays

I looked around for a thread for this, didnt see one.

from CBS sportsline:
]The Toronto Blue Jays kept up their spending spree on Tuesday by agreeing to terms with starter A.J. Burnett on a $55 million, five-year contract

The deal was announced at baseball's winter meetings just hours after the Blue Jays gave general manager J.P. Ricciardi a three-year contract extension. The Blue Jays, who already gave B.J. Ryan the richest contract ever for a reliever, then reeled in Burnett, the best starter on the free-agent market.

"He's got one of the best arms in baseball," Toronto manager John Gibbons said. "On any given night, he can shut out. I just think he'll fit in perfect."

I hope the Mets play the Blue Jays in October.

Great money for a pitcher with a career record under .500 and a 3.73 ERA...

They kept showing comparisons between this deal and the one in 2000 by L.A. for Dreifort on ESPNews. Eerily similar

I guess the spending money is back in baseball. (Well, everywhere except Florida.) It will take more than Burnett and Ryan to make the Jays competitive, and these deals will probably look worse in 2010 than they do now, so Ricciardi can't afford to rest on his laurels. Stay tuned.

The impending sale of the Nationals is going to net the other clubs at least $10 million each. So there's definitely money to spend.

Lets see we have J,P then B,J and now A,J, does C,J Nitcowski still pitch for them?

just read online that this is the longest contract for a free-agent starter since Chan Ho Park's five-year, $65 million contract with the Texas Rangers ..

Nitkowski recently signed a minor league deal with Pittsburgh.

Damn that ruins my theory that J,P had a fetish for names like that....

Hmm...do we still have that thread with the "All ____ Teams" that included Kristen Benson and the All Girly Named Team?

Toronto is a good place for him where we will see him on an extremely limited basis. The Mets don't exactly rip this guy. Nice to have him gone.

assuming the contract is insured against his previous injuries (this guy gets hurt alot and the insurance companies often won't touch injuries you've already had) its a good deal.

figured this would merit a thread itself.
Didnt look there.

This is kinda Met news as well as signing news, since there was talk of re-aquiring him this off season.
