Serious romantic comedy? Psychologically-damaged folks meet-cute spectacle? Artsy, clumsy-but-heartfelt feelgoodery, putting "the 'fun' in 'dysfunction'"? Jennifer Lawrence's real launch pad? The last time Deniro actually tries in a movie? The one and only time you'll see Eagles fans as romantic heroes? An Oscar pretender? An Oscar dark horse?

David O. Russell's latest thing is all that and then some. Or some of all that. Or something else entirely?

It was a nice little film, but seriously overrepresented in Academy Award nominations. Jennifer Lawrence is a serious contender for Best Actress (she'll lose to Jessica Chastain, but Lawrence is arguably better in this role), Bradley Cooper is pretty to look at, and the screenplay will give you a headache if you think about it too long.

BTW, if you're looking for a film involving a dance competition, Strictly Ballroom covered this subject much more satisfyingly.

But it does portray Eagles fans for the drunken morons that they are, so it has that in its favor.

We went halfway through last night and are preparing to re-enter this evening. As someone with some crazy in my family, it has been alternately engaging and horrifying. I'm very curious as to how they wrap this up. I'm guessing it won't be a neat little package.

Sort of put me in mind of Observe and Report and Safety Not Guaranteed in the sub-genre of films with psychotic protagonists off their meds.

And... it somehow navigates through that minefield and becomes a dance romance. Who knew?

Well, everybody but me, but still.

Not sure what to make of this. The whole thing seems implausible, but the acting is good, and Jennifer Lawrence is cute as a button. I gave it a 7.
