The Baltimore Sun has a sportswriter named Peter Schmuck.

Has actually authored a column called "The Schmuck Stops Here."

The Schmuckster has been with the Sun since the early 90s at least. I may be wrong but I think he replaced Mike Littwin on the O's beat. Littwin was a very funny writer who I liked to rip off in the old days.

I never watched Andy Griffith but I feel like I remember him from 70s era variety shows where gayness would be the first assumption. Perhaps I'm thinking of someone else.

Yeah, the gayness has been pretty out there if you're lookin'.

He stayed at the Regency when my dad was the security director there. Daad had an open invitation to come visit Gomer at his macadamia ranch.

Actress Katharine Ross (Butch Cassidy, The Graduate, Stepford Wives) turned 73 y/o today. Damn!
Haven't seen her for a while so have no idea how she's looking these days as her acting resume is rather sketchy since the '90s. Hell, it's pretty thin since Stepford Wives back in 1975.

But the TIDK (Thing I Didn't Know) part was that she has been married for the last 28 years to actor Sam Elliott--he of the great voice and mustache--whose career seemed to have taken off just as hers was petering out.
He's 4-1/2 years younger than she but, get this, also made his film debut in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid although his bit part in that flick (as 'Card Player #2') did not bring him into contact with star Ross. They met on the set of 1978's 'The Legacy' (yeah, I don't know it either), married six years later and have one child.
The marriage is apparently his first. It's her fifth.

Not only that, but the Season 7 one featured a mural that looked very similar to one in Harlem created by homeless children as a creative-workshop project... and led to legal wrangling over the credit (and temporary usage of a heavily-edited version of the sequence that, by-and-large, omitted the mural).

The difference is that media outlets don't treat stuff like this as news these days but rather as programming.
In this case there's the acknowledgment of the milestone itself, but that's then augmented, particularly as it conveniently falls during the NBA's ASG weekend, with a barrage of Top-Ten lists, past ASG & Slam-Dunk highlights films, renewed discussions about how LeBron and/or Kobe measure up, and a host of related topics just perfect for time-fillers in this otherwise slow portion of the sports calendar.
Couple all that with many of the talking heads being just of the right age for MJ to have been their first idol and you've got a perfect storm for media-gasms.

Granted, but the Wright Thompson ESPN.com flagship article is a hell of a writing job, and far from uncomplicated encomium.

There's a shudder in every child of the '80s and '90s who does the math and realizes that Michael Jordan is turning 50. Where did the years go? Jordan has trouble believing it, difficulty admitting it to himself. But he's in the mood for admissions today, and there's a look on his face, a half-smile, as he considers how far to go.

"I … I always thought I would die young," he says, leaning up to rap his knuckles on the rich, dark wood of his desk.

He has kept this fact a secret from most people. A fatalist obsession didn't go with his public image and, well, it's sort of strange. His mother would get angry with him when he'd talk to her about it. He just could never imagine being old. He seemed too powerful, too young, and death was more likely than a slow decline. The universe might take him, but it would not permit him to suffer the graceless loss and failure of aging. A tragic flaw could undo him but never anything as common as bad knees or failing eyesight.

Later that night, standing in his kitchen, he squints across his loft at the television. His friend Quinn Buckner catches him.

"You gonna need to get some glasses," Buckner says.

"I can see," Jordan says.

"Don't be bulls----ing me," Buckner says. "I can see you struggling."

"I can see," Jordan insists.

What's the infringement? Presumably Greg signed a publishing contract which gave the publisher the right to publish in standard publishing formats: print, ebook and, unless it was stricken from the contract, audio. While it is standard that they notify him that they are exercising or licensing audio rights there is no need for his approval. Before people go about suggesting lawsuits maybe Greg should weigh in.

Michelle Shocked, the folk singer who became famous in the late ’80s/early ’90s as the one who isn't Meshell Ndegeocello, went off on a homophobic tirade at a recent San Francisco concert, leaving thousands surprised that Michelle Shocked is still playing concerts. The incident occurred at a venue called Yoshi’s, which featured the unthinkable act of a Michelle Shocked headlining gig in the year 2013, interrupted by the somewhat more predictable anti-gay vitriol from a born-again Christian, which Shocked has claimed to be since the mid-’90s.

I don't know. The snark doesn't serve the story. Marginalizing her career to date and her relative relevancy (and Meshell Ndegeocello's for that matter) is engineering your story backwards, and hardly seems a productive (or even fair) response to her tirade.

Nobody should care what you think because you're a laughably forgettable act seems like a card Rush Lindbaugh would play. If Tanya Donelly makes a bold and articulate stand for legalization of same-sex marriage, I'd hate to the response be, "Ha! People are still paying money to see her?! She hasn't had a hit since 1994!"

I've always found the hypocrisy of saying "who cares what you think, shut up and go away" to someone not known for their political and social ideologies, while saying "right on, good for him/her" for the same whom think the same that you do reason enough to tune it all out and be "whatever" whenever seeing such declarative statements from entertainers and athletes.

Especially when memes are made out of their quotes or standup bits...well maybe if I saw a bmfc1 quip in a meme I wouldn't mind! =;)

I like "One Hit to the Body." The rhythm guitar restraint-and-then-EXPLOSION (Wood on the acoustic/Keef on the electric) feels a little like AC/DC.

Video shot on the Stones' massive tour set. Mick and Keith were fighting at the time, so the director decided to use that tension as the theme of the video.

Due to two natural deaths, one assassination, and a string of one-term and partial-term presidencies, there was a stretch in the mid-19th century where ten Presidents covered just eight terms or 32 years.
The years running from March of 1837 through March of 1869 were served, at varying lengths, by Van Buren, W. Harrison, Tyler, Polk, Taylor, Fillmore, Pierce, Buchanan, Lincoln, & A Johnson - and it would have been even shorter had the impeachment of Johnson not fallen short by just a single vote. Lincoln's four years plus about six weeks represented the longest time in office during that span.

By contrast the most recent eight-plus terms have been covered by only five Presidents which, assuming Barack finishes out his run, will become nine terms and 36 years for the quintet of Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush, and Obama.

Chilliwack's 1981 album WANNA BE A STAR (including the big hit "Gone Gone Gone (My Girl)") is actually a kind of concept album, um, about wanting to be a rock star.

The hit is sung from the perspective of titlular "star" who'd left his hometown behind in pursuit of starness, and can only reach his peeps now by sending them songs they might hear on the radio.

Re: Things You Didn't Know 'til Recently - 2013

There's a possible living descendant (but probably not) of Abraham Lincoln, walking around West Palm Beach, Florida. Abe's son Robert's daughter Jesse's son Robert Todd Lincoln Beckwith was likely the last of the president's line when he died in 1985, but his wife did bear a son, Timothy Lincoln Beckwith, whose parentage he disputed, claiming to have had a vasectomy years earlier. His wife, for her part, refused to submit the son for a paternity test when the couple divorced in 1976, and the son, upon trying to claim his father's inheritance in 1994, settled for a big chunk o' cash with the trust that instead was the beneficiaries of the will, as well as the beneficiaries of the trust, including the Red Cross, the First Church of Christ Scientist, and Iowa Wesleyan College.

As much as I think it's nice to see the Red Cross and the Christian Scientists working together, if I was an historian trying to make a name for himself, I'd be following that guy around Florida, trying to get a DNA sample off the straw of his discarded frappuccino.

well, I imagine there's always been fanfiction, but when you don't have the internet it's hard to share it, and it remains a half written mess in a book of a writer. (and I imagine there are more amateur writers, just like photographers, thanks to the Internet)

Of course, since the Internet brings out all extremes, legitimately interesting fanfiction is lost amongst all the slash fiction. Basically, for any TV show that exists, there are people that have written fanfiction episodes where (pick two characters) have sex.

Re: Things You Didn't Know 'til Recently - 2013

Hey, it's certainly reported as if it's unusual.

The poet entered a world without moorings that allowed him no place to rest. Rene Karl Wilhelm Johann Joseph Maria Rilke, born prematurely on December 4, 1875, was at first so weak that his parents had to wait a fortnight before they dared take him to the Church of St. Heinrich down the street for his christening. The previous year a daughter had died a week after her birth, and Phia now watched over this newborn with excessive care. In fact, during Rilke's early years she acted as if she sought to recover the lost girl through the boy. Two of his names--Rene and Maria--make plain the mother's attempt to lend him a female identity. For five years, until he went to school, she dressed him like a girl against his father's ineffectual opposition. "I had to wear beautiful long dresses," Rilke recalled many years later, "and until I started school I went about like a little girl. I think my mother played with me as though I were a big doll."

Hemmingway, whatever the truth about his childhood, wasn't really a Victorian child.
