It's days like today that one realizes how thin dress pants really are. At what age is it no longer appropriate to wear snow pants around?

Re: It's Fucking Cold

I wear crappy dress pants that aren't qutie as dressy (or khakis) so don't quite have that problem. My problem is more that my car has 189k miles on it and takes forever to warm up. The coldest I am is the 2-3 minutes I sit in the shivering car waiting for it to get warm enough to move and then it takes the entire commute for my hands to get warm from the cold steering wheel. Don't ask why I don't put on the gloves to drive.

Not only is it cold, I didn't realize it was coming, so I blissfully went out yesterday to shovel the driveway with my normal coat and gloves on instead of the Nanook of the North models.

Last night I kept hearing weird noises out on the deck, loud bangs and such. Probably the new wood exploding in the cold. I am afraid to look.

Where's that fuckin' global warming when you need it?

This statement from that link doesn't make a lot of sense -- Oymyakon is 750 metres above sea level, which means that the length of a day varies from 3 hours in December to 21 hours in the summer -- as it implies that the elevation (slightly less than half a mile) is the reason for the variation rather than the latitude.

Oymyakon, population 472, is located in eastern Yakutia at an elevation of approximately 750 meters above sea level. At the village's high latitude, day length varies from 3 hours in December to 21 hours in the summer.

Re: It's Fucking Cold

Yeah it's cold, but there are a few things bugging me about all this.

1) It's JANUARY!!!! it's supposed to be cold

2) I hate these local TV weather geeks who just can't resist the opportunity to exaggerate things to the point where maps list, not temperatures, but the 'wind chill factors', almost exclusively in some cases as if the air temp is a concept that no longer exists. If it's really windy then fine, but let's stop this silly race to see how much you can play up the misery. They do the same thing during warm spells in summer when suddenly air temp is replaced by "temperature humidity index" or other similar concocted nonsense.

3) NBC long ago morphed the climate change concept into a marketing image when they declared themselves to be the "Green Network", often putting a specially designed logo on the screen during certain weeks of the year when the pr push is in full bloom. It also helps that they are under the same corporate umbrella as the Weather Channel so putting that staff to use is an easy synergy call. But, jeez, their national news, all 23 minutes of it where complex stories are reduced to sound bites, manages to get a weather story in seemingly several times a week these days. Last week they spent several of those precious minutes to tell us it was snowing ... in Minnesota ... in January - and that that snow may hit Chicago as well. This is part of a question I brought up in the 'Sandy' thread; is every variation from the norm now going to be framed as part of a larger environmental story as if variations never occurred until now? Save weather stories for real catastrophes Brian, not for every time the thermometer strays 10 degrees above or below the norm.

Re: It's Fucking Cold

Leaving aside that the overall rise in global temperatures IS reflected in every aspect of the weather (if more legible in macro than on any given day/in any given event)... have they been discussing climate change every time they show that it's snowing in Chicago? I mean, with all due respect, FK... it's the national news, and, along with some analysis, it (ostensibly) reports what's happening; if there's six inches of snow in the Midwest, well, that's what's happening in the Midwest.

Well, the way we measure temperature has always been a man-made concoction.

When we've described our environment for years by saying "It's not the heat; it's the humidity," it's only natural that we'd try and find a metric that incorporates both to take the ambiguity out of a statistical measure of the conditions of the day. Just like it was only natural to find a way to combine slugging and on-base percentage so we'd have a way of comparing two different types of hitters side-by-side.

Re: It's Fucking Cold

I agree with FK on one point though...when they start frothing at the mouth when it's 95 degrees or 5 degrees and they tell us to stay inside! You'll die otherwise! it's a little much.

Humans are somewhat adaptable to temperature changes after all, and unless we are not dressed properly for the weather, we should be just fine.

It's nice to know when there is a storm coming for sure, but don't scare the pants off of us. 'Cos then we will probably be too cold.

The Sandy predictions were spot on I might add. Maybe a little less than adequate as it turned out.

Re: It's Fucking Cold

I'll chime in on this aspect - snow in Chicago has the potential of messing up air travel all over the country, so it's helpful for people to know that they might have to make alternative flight plans.

Aside from that, I agree that the hysteria over cold weather in the winter and hot weather in the summer is over the top.

The difference is that the weathermedia loves to say things like "it's 22 degrees outside, but the wind makes it feel like -3". No, it doesn't. It makes it feel like a 22 degree day with a lot of wind.

The problem with coming up with a single metric for the combination is that it takes the subjective feel of cold plus wind (or heat plus humidity for the temperature-humidity index), and gives it a false cloak of statistical objectivity. Better to say that it's 22 degrees outside with a 13 mile an hour wind, and let people come to their own conclusions as to how that feels.

I have a similar issue with WAR, as opposed to OPS. I'd rather just see a player's specific statistics plus perhaps some argument as to why those specific stats are worth X number of wins to a team, rather than simply accepting a statement like "Wright's 2012 WAR was 5.7" without seeing the underlying numbers.

Re: It's Fucking Cold

The distinction is very meaningful to guys on the street. The DC Hypothermia program guaranteed shelter to all comers when the temperature dipped below freezing. If the temp was expected to be that low, a hypothermia alert went on, and a handful of agencies would open hypothermia overflow shelters, whose expenses would be reimbursed by the city.

But one night that's 30 degrees, clear and still, we'd open up and only get a dozen or so refugees. But another night would be 34, with pummeling rain and swiirling wind, there'd be 60 guys outside the shelter, waiting to get in, but the city wouldn't trigger the alert.

So it's not a semantic question. It's important that those elements get factored in for a meaningful bottom line.

And it's as good a time to mention as any: you'll thank yourself if you take a moment before the weekend starts to Google a number for your jurisdiction's homeless or hypothermia hotline. Punch it into your cell phone, write it in on a business card to tuck into your wallet, or write it with a marker on your wrist. When you see a freezing homeless person out there in distress, you'll be glad you have somebody to call.

Re: It's Fucking Cold

Yes, but wind chill does somewhat mean something. Because in, say, April, if the wind is coming from the south, it might be warmer than wind coming from the north, so wouldn't that be logical, if you're watching the weather, to know, "Yeah, it's 50 degrees out there, but that's a cold wind, so when it kicks up, you're going to want to make sure you have a jacket"?

Re: It's Fucking Cold

Various responses:

- lots of things happen everyday that don't get reported; planes land safely, for instance, but we only report on the ones that don't.
My objection, about NBC in particular, is that they've positioned themselves to the point where they're reporting virtually any slightly out of the ordinary weather event as if it's top story news. Partly I'm sure this is because it's cheap and easy to get some regional correspondent to stand out on a street corner and because weather stories often make for pretty pictures. But mainly I believe it's because it fits in well with their corporate strategy and whether said story is actually newsworthy to a national audience seems merely coincidental.

- 'wind-chill factors' and 'heat indexes' are worthy approximations of the conditions above and beyond just the air temp, but their use as a substitute for actual temps on their maps smacks of cheesy sensationalism to make the extremes look even more dramatic in graphic form. You know what I wanna hear?: some guy give the wind-chill on a July day but of course they don't because that would make things seem less dramatic even if the affect is just as real. Why minimize things when it's just as easy to magnify them?!?

- if they're reporting the weather conditions because it's affecting travel or some such stuff then fine, but that's not what they're doing 90% of the time.

- my point here isn't to deny global warming (whether cyclical, man-caused, or some combo of the two) it's that citing it as a reason to trumpet every variation from the norm as something that could only be the result of impending doom (while conveniently fitting the whole pr campaign) is weak at best even when it's not totally misleading.

That photo is from Toronto, with a guy trying to make a go of it on a grate with escaping steam.

There's just a lot of folks who aren't quite half dead, but are in more trouble than they realize.

Cops and firefighters aren't always the best at talking them off the streets. In my experience, the firefighters, usually the more able first responders in any emergency that doesn't involve a gun, aren't always at their best with the homeless.

I don't know what the standard is in NYC these days, but when I's in DC, they had a fully outfitted truck escort the medical van on all calls. It was a waste of their time, training, and equipment to have eight of them standing around while the med team picked up a drunk who fell on his face, and it would cloud their better nature.

If it's not a fall-down situation, but just a situation of dangerous vunerability, there are others out there hopefully with the training to get folks inside.
