Snowmageddon - Feb 2013 version

Frayed Knot
Feb 08 2013 05:51 AM

We should take this opportunity to say goodbye to Willets as, after today, we may not be hearing from him for a few weeks.

Personally, I think this storm is arriving 51 weeks too early.
Just the thought of something like this showing up during Super Bowl week next year is too delicious to even contemplate.

So not heading up to my office today was the right decision. Still mostly rain here.

I didn't go to work either, but for entirely different reasons.

I do intend to go to the gym though (although I guess I could walk..it's only a half mile) and to CVS to buy cold medicine for the wife.

I went to work. Was snowing in Brooklyn and Queens but raining in Manhattan (got warmer on the commute).

Heavy stuff supposed to come at sundown, will bail early to get Lunchpail since afterschool program will prolly be canceled.

I wasn't aware of this until just now, but apparently the Weather Channel has decided to give names to winter storms. This one is called "Nemo". The National Weather Service, which names hurricanes, doesn't give names to winter storms, and they're not pleased that the Weather Channel is.

If we were a Weather Channel board instead of a Mets board, we'd probably have six threads about this controversy.

but I like it. we refer to these storms anyway, why not name them?

Because if I have to shovel, I give them names they couldn't use on tv.

I noticed that name thing too and was going to ask when such a thing started.
Didn't realize that it's merely an unofficial thing from the Weather Channel although, with the reflected pub it'll get via NBC (corporate overlords of TWC), I suspect it's going to catch on.

I'm just figuring that, since eastern New England is about to be buried, you'll be not only cut off from all human communication for a while but also busy with the effects of such like food rationing and hoarding, rampant crime, dystopia, human sacrifice, y'know, that kind of fun stuff.
And then when the last of it melts come late May or early June you'll come back and tell us how it went ... assuming you survive of course.

16. Plato: The famous Greek philosopher.

17. Q: Just Q. It’s possible they named it after James Bond’s gadget guy, or the villain in some of the later “Star Trek” TV shows, but we don’t know for sure.

18. Rocky: Yeah, they definitely seemed to struggle to keep up with the mythology theme as they went deeper into the alphabet.

19. Saturn: The Roman god of time.

20. Triton: The son of Poseidon in Greek mythology.

21. Ukko: The Finnish god of weather.

22. Virgil: The famous Roman poet.

23. Walda: Another “Lord of the Rings” character.

24. Xerxes: The king of Persia.

25. Yogi: The former catcher for the Yankees who said, “It’s not over ’til it’s over.” . . . or a cartoon bear that steals picnic baskets.

26. Zeus: The most powerful of the Greek gods.

Nah, I just like satirizing stuff I hear on the Weather Channel.
Actually it's usually local news that goes overboard on this kind of stuff: "DON'T LEAVE HOME ... STAY INDOORS AND LISTEN TO THIS STATION OR YOU'LL DIE!!!!"

We got about 18 inches of snow. My daughters live in towns that are in the area of CT that got hit the hardest (The "Route 8 Corridor"), and each got about 36 inches of snow (according to the official measurements). And that doesn't include drifting.

Re: Snowmageddon - Feb 2013 version

I have no idea how much we got here in Fair Lawn. A foot? a bit more? Being in a garden apartment sometimes the buildings all around buffer us from the worst of it. Wonder how it's drifting elsewhere.

I had to walk and buy a shovel. Didn't even have the little emergency car one. Don't know where that went, but definitely required some shoveling around the cars to get them out. Not like the supers doa good job making sure parking lots are clean or anything. (Nor do they apparently give any care to snowblowing snow at your window (not mine) at 7 in the morning.

Maybe 8-10 inches in Merrick. We were shoveled out in about an hour or so and all three cars are clear.

We're heading to New Brunswick tonight, and it looks like we shouldn't have any problems. Anybody from those parts? We're taking our 17 year-old nephew, and we were looking at Old Man Rafferty's for dinner.

I think that's the one with the electric trains running overhead. Unless I'm confusing it with Tumulty's. Both are pretty good, but nothing special. There's better to be had in New Brunswick; if I had to choose one place to eat there, it would be the Ethiopian restaurant. Makela's, I believe it's called.

Is something going on at Rutgers tonight? I see from another thread that Vic Sage is also driving down to New Brunswick.

And back to the topic at hand, the Newark/Jersey City area took the lightest hit in metro NY. Only about five inches here.

When did snowstorms start getting names? Wouldn't this used to have been called "The Blizzard of 2013" instead of getting a name and all?

Is the naming for scientific purposes or is it just a marketing thing. "We can't sell a nameless blizzard! Now... 'Nemo' --- people will tune in for that."

it's a weather channel thing this year. I don't know why people are up in arms about it, it's much easier than "The Blizzard of 2013" especially if there are more than one and that doesn't even tell you which winter it was. was it December or January? big difference.

It seems to be working much like tropical storms. And as for getting all the way to N before people seem to have noticed they were getting named, I imagine most people can't name more than one name before S.

We sat in Rafferty's 45 minutes after being told it would be 30 (and that it would be at least 15 minutes more) and ended up running into Chipotle so we wouldn't be late for the show. My fault, I guess. I never thought the wait would be so long at 5:30. Thanks for the tips, though. Next time we'll pick one of the places you guys recommended.

I don't see this happening...the state regulators in the northeast didn't even allow insurers to use the higher windstorm deductibles for Sandy because the winds were just short of hurricane force when they hit land. They're sure not going to let them raise deductibles because the Weather Channel has decided to give cutesy hug-a-bear names to snowstorms.

It all depends on how the policies are written, and whether the Weather Channel is considered a weather authority.

From a legal standpoint, this could be messy.
