Snowmageddon - Feb 2013 version

We should take this opportunity to say goodbye to Willets as, after today, we may not be hearing from him for a few weeks.

same here in the Bronx Didn't go to work....getting there wouldn't be the problem, it's getting home later.

So not heading up to my office today was the right decision. Still mostly rain here.

Ceetar Feb 08 2013 06:36 AM Re: Snowmageddon - Feb 2013 version |
I didn't go to work either, but for entirely different reasons.

John Cougar Lunchbucket Feb 08 2013 07:29 AM Re: Snowmageddon - Feb 2013 version |
I went to work. Was snowing in Brooklyn and Queens but raining in Manhattan (got warmer on the commute).

Benjamin Grimm Feb 08 2013 08:31 AM Re: Snowmageddon - Feb 2013 version |
I wasn't aware of this until just now, but apparently the Weather Channel has decided to give names to winter storms. This one is called "Nemo". The National Weather Service, which names hurricanes, doesn't give names to winter storms, and they're not pleased that the Weather Channel is.
|
Ceetar Feb 08 2013 09:46 AM Re: Snowmageddon - Feb 2013 version |

at least six. but I like it. we refer to these storms anyway, why not name them?
|
MFS62 Feb 08 2013 09:59 AM Re: Snowmageddon - Feb 2013 version |
|
Because if I have to shovel, I give them names they couldn't use on tv. Later

Frayed Knot Feb 08 2013 10:09 AM Re: Snowmageddon - Feb 2013 version |

I noticed that name thing too and was going to ask when such a thing started. Didn't realize that it's merely an unofficial thing from the Weather Channel although, with the reflected pub it'll get via NBC (corporate overlords of TWC), I suspect it's going to catch on.

I'm just figuring that, since eastern New England is about to be buried, you'll be not only cut off from all human communication for a while but also busy with the effects of such like food rationing and hoarding, rampant crime, dystopia, human sacrifice, y'know, that kind of fun stuff. And then when the last of it melts come late May or early June you'll come back and tell us how it went ... assuming you survive of course.

Between Queens, Manhattan, and the Bronx, I passed by a bunch of gas-station runs-- and a few demi-gouge-y price boards-- after dropping YoungerPooper at preschool.

they can't be serious with these storm names. there's another blizzard out west. they've named it orko. like, the little dude from he-man. orko. winterstorm spongebob should be coming up in a few weeks.
|
metsmarathon Feb 08 2013 12:12 PM Re: Snowmageddon - Feb 2013 version |
or, maybe for q, they'll just call the storm "Q"

Nah, I just like satirizing stuff I hear on the Weather Channel. Actually it's usually local news that goes overboard on this kind of stuff: "DON'T LEAVE HOME ... STAY INDOORS AND LISTEN TO THIS STATION OR YOU'LL DIE!!!!" That said, all indications are that you're in for a doozy up there.

MFS62 Feb 09 2013 10:35 AM Re: Snowmageddon - Feb 2013 version |
We got about 18 inches of snow. My daughters live in towns that are in the area of CT that got hit the hardest (The "Route 8 Corridor"), and each got about 36 inches of snow (according to the official measurements). And that doesn't include drifting.
|
Kong76 Feb 09 2013 11:09 AM Re: Snowmageddon - Feb 2013 version |
Got about 15" in No Westchester, with lots of drifts. Lotta cleaning
|
themetfairy Feb 09 2013 11:11 AM Re: Snowmageddon - Feb 2013 version |
About 4" down here. The tertiary roads are a little messy but the main roads are fine.
|
Ceetar Feb 09 2013 11:19 AM Re: Snowmageddon - Feb 2013 version |
I have no idea how much we got here in Fair Lawn. A foot? a bit more? Being in a garden apartment sometimes the buildings all around buffer us from the worst of it. Wonder how it's drifting elsewhere.
|
seawolf17 Feb 09 2013 11:23 AM Re: Snowmageddon - Feb 2013 version |
About two feet in northern Suffolk. Pretty kooky out there. News 12 showing aerial shots of the Smith Haven Mall area, and it's all completely snowed under, with cars everywhere.

Maybe 8-10 inches in Merrick. We were shoveled out in about an hour or so and all three cars are clear.

I think that's the one with the electric trains running overhead. Unless I'm confusing it with Tumulty's. Both are pretty good, but nothing special. There's better to be had in New Brunswick; if I had to choose one place to eat there, it would be the Ethiopian restaurant. Makela's, I believe it's called. Is something going on at Rutgers tonight? I see from another thread that Vic Sage is also driving down to New Brunswick. And back to the topic at hand, the Newark/Jersey City area took the lightest hit in metro NY. Only about five inches here.

When did snowstorms start getting names? Wouldn't this used to have been called "The Blizzard of 2013" instead of getting a name and all?
|
Ceetar Feb 10 2013 07:30 AM Re: Snowmageddon - Feb 2013 version |
|
it's a weather channel thing this year. I don't know why people are up in arms about it, it's much easier than "The Blizzard of 2013" especially if there are more than one and that doesn't even tell you which winter it was. was it December or January? big difference. It seems to be working much like tropical storms. And as for getting all the way to N before people seem to have noticed they were getting named, I imagine most people can't name more than one name before S.
|
Mets – Willets Point Feb 10 2013 07:47 AM Re: Snowmageddon - Feb 2013 version |
I prefer the Weather Channel names to the tired and played out "Snowmageddon" and "Snowpocalypse." Those are so 2011.
|
MFS62 Feb 10 2013 09:47 AM Re: Snowmageddon - Feb 2013 version |
The bastages came through again and plowed snow around my car. I had to dig it out again.

He didn't say you were up in arms about it. He may have been referring to my earlier post which mentioned that the National Weather Service is unhappy about the Weather Channel naming winter storms.

yeah, that's all I meant, I think three of you all said "woah, when'd they start doing this?" in this thread. But I'd seen people poking fun at it all winter. I'm just not seeing any drawback to it.

cooby Feb 10 2013 08:20 PM Re: Snowmageddon - Feb 2013 version |
We were expecting 3-6 inches and got maybe 1/3 inch. But we are expecting some ice tonight.

We sat in Rafferty's 45 minutes after being told it would be 30 (and that it would be at least 15 minutes more) and ended up running into Chipotle so we wouldn't be late for the show. My fault, I guess. I never thought the wait would be so long at 5:30. Thanks for the tips, though. Next time we'll pick one of the places you guys recommended.

Unofficially named storms causing confusion for insurance companies
|
Chad Ochoseis Feb 12 2013 06:33 AM Re: Snowmageddon - Feb 2013 version |
|
I don't see this happening...the state regulators in the northeast didn't even allow insurers to use the higher windstorm deductibles for Sandy because the winds were just short of hurricane force when they hit land. They're sure not going to let them raise deductibles because the Weather Channel has decided to give cutesy hug-a-bear names to snowstorms.

themetfairy Feb 12 2013 07:28 AM Re: Snowmageddon - Feb 2013 version |

It all depends on how the policies are written, and whether the Weather Channel is considered a weather authority. From a legal standpoint, this could be messy.
