I wouldn't resign the pope coming off a down year. Make him prove he can put up the numbers before you extend that contract.

I think he'll probably get enough votes for sainthood after five years, but I don't see him as a first-ballot guy.

It's way overdue. Pope should have resigned after Second Bull Run.

It's being reported that Hillary does not intend to explore
a run at pope-hood this time around.

Heyman reporting the reason he resigned is because the Wilpons gave a minor-league deal with the chance to compete for a rotation spot.

Re: Pope to resign???

In case you were wondering

A few questions:

1. How will people now refer to Pope Benedict XVI? Does he revert to his pre-papal name of Cardinal Ratzinger? Does he become "the Catholic formerly known as the Pope"?

2. Since the last resignation was in 1415, is it possible that this will establish a new precedent, and the next Pope will be expected to resign before death?

It's interesting that this has happened shortly after the Queen of the Netherlands abdicated, continuing a tradition in that monarchy established in the 20th century.

3. Perhaps the Pope is no longer a Catholic?

I've just been speaking to the Catholic church here in England about the first point.

A spokesman told me that at 8pm on 28 February, when he resigns, Pope Benedict will revert to his pre-pope title of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. He will no longer be addressed as "his holiness".

As for TypingWithToes' other questions, it's certainly possible this process could start a precedent, since as John Hooper pointed out earlier Benedict's decision partly stems from longer life expectancy in the modern age. Equally it would be surprising if both this example and that of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands did not give Queen Elizabeth some pause for thought – although it remains extremely unlikely she would abdicate. And, yes, the pope's Catholic.

Did TypingWithToes ask if the former pope will still be expected to defecate in the forest?

I wonder if the fact that she's not Catholic matters as much as her not being from New York did during her New York Senate campaign.
On that topic though, Caroline Kennedy is Catholic so maybe she'll ask to be appointed as the next Pope saving her from going through all those annoying in between steps like Priest, Cardinal, etc.

You don't think he's going to do a Michael Jordan - Roger Clemens - Brett Favre thing and keep coming out of retirement?

i have no particular knowledge about the papacy, or the institutions of Christianity generally, but this retirement thing seems odd to me. How do you go from "Vicar of Christ", successor to the martyred St. Peter, and voice of God on Earth on a Monday, and on a Tuesday you're old man Ratzinger shooing kids off your lawn? It seems to me it's a gig that you leave only like you leave the mob -- feet first. But whatever, i guess. good luck to him.

I'm guessing that he's in really poor health. And it's not like you can take a leave of absence from being Pope.

The previous Pope was in very bad health for quite a while, but he seemed to have the perspective that Vic mentioned: the job ends when God decides and not before.

I think this Pope is being more practical.

This Pope was the right-hand man of the previous Pope and, I've heard, thought that JPII's long illness hurt the church.

Christ Almighty , this is a man that was and is complicit in covering up pedophilia within his church. There was a time when every reported case went to his desk at his request.....and what has he done ?, blame the victims time and again.

A most vile man.

Re: Pope to resign???

I'm not defending him. I agree with everything you say. I just think resigning your position when you're physically unable to do your job is the practical thing to do even if it is a lifetime appointment. That goes whether you're pope or a Supreme Court justice.

Well yeah, that's the reason he SHOULD resign, I'm just saying it isn't the reason he IS resigning.

As a former catholic, I agree with most of it. Not sure why
he fluffs over John Paul ll like he was nobody. That was one
cool pope. He probably has a lot of issues, as do most former
followers of the church.

Re: Pope to resign???

Shanley seems to be a little bit using this news to roll out any general issues with the church and pile on with cheap and silly stuff like ('uttlerly without charm"?). That's very far from a serious reading of this papacy. It's unworthy of The Times.

It reads like a blog.

Re: Pope to resign???

General issues and kvetch-points he has with the church under Ratzinger's tenure are probably fair game. I mean, JP II gets, like, half-credit for the Iron Curtain, no?

And as to charm... well... (See: JP II and countless "common touch" eulogies)

I'm not sure what you're getting at here. There's nothing particular to the pope's tenure about many of his points. "Men based in Italy" are diminishing the New York Church? As if their geographic location was somehow particular or new or even the issue. Is that to imply that the papacy should be moved to New York or that New York should be left to run their own game? It's like a local politician decrying that "people in Washington" are making decisions. As if that were new or self-evidently the problem. Or that he wouldn't love it if people in Washington (or Italy) got on board with his agenda.

And as to charm... well... (See: JP II and countless "common touch" eulogies)

The guy was a homely old dude, while his predecessor looked like a cherub. Of all the things worthy of discussion, should a mature person really make hay of that? Want to see a charmless dude? Google John XXIII.

There's a lot worth of analyzing in the church's policies and Benedict's papacy. That's an immature screed.
