Winner, Winner Chicken Dinner!

When establishing their online presence (at http://guysamerican.com) Guy Fieri and his partners apparently forgot to secure http://guysamericankitchenandbar.com/, since Photoshop-"corrected" by @BryanMytko.

I literally cannot read the menu items out loud without giggling.

Have we already had Fieri's Times review posted here?

Ha! I was hoping to get a chance to read that article. I remember watching the FN show where Guy was competing to be the next "star" and he wasn't my choice, but he seemed okay. Sometimes though I think it's gone to his head, and maybe this restaurant could use his attention.

We could use a Food Network thread here. Unless I am the only Food Network junkie.

Whatcha like? I'm not a Guy Fieri fan, but I like that Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives show. It's a real tease, though. I mean like, am I supposed to hop on a plane for that roadside diner off of a dirt two lane highway 50 miles away from some city in Oklahoma for some chili that's great because Guy says so? Tantalizing.

For some of those places, though, I'd totally do that.

I wouldn't mind taking a road trip and making a day out of eating at one of those diners highlighted on DD&D. But a part of me is concerned about quality control. Guy once covered an eatery that I'm familiar with that I think is kind of crappy -- and If I decided to drive two or three hours each way to try it out, I'd be extremely pissed.

Re: Winner, Winner Chicken Dinner!

Hitting places with multiple entries in the DDD back-catalog-- Syracuse, for example-- might be a nice hedge against that. So is choosing a joint that does something truly unique, as opposed to just "big," or ostensibly "good."

Food-destination travel kind of rocks. A trip to Tennessee a couple of birthdays ago with the primary aim of finding the best barbecue in Memphis and Tennessee via trial-and-error was one of my favorite vacations ever; we've got several street-food-based excursions on deck as cheapo birthday/weekend trips (New Haven "apizza"/Louis' Lunch, e.g.).

Here's a place in the Bronx that has been featured on the show worth checking out, I had been here before it was on the show based on a Times article....been here several times since.....the hours are the problem here......great BBQ

Re: Winner, Winner Chicken Dinner!

Seconded. Fieri may be a buffoon, roundly-- and deservedly-- mocked, but the producers do a hell of a job with tracking down these places... and Mo Gridder's is pretty damn solid. (Plus, get an on-site oil change.)

Looking to make a trip? This site might help.

I agree, Guy is harmless, and not for nothing it's an addictive show.....yes, one of the great things about Mo Gridders is the local ambiance .....very Bronx

Re: Winner, Winner Chicken Dinner!

I have regularly made a habit of checking out the various Diners/Drive Ins/Dives places, particularly when traveling for baseball games or concerts. There are a few that have been underwhelming but the majority of them -- particularly those featured in the earlier seasons of the show -- have been quite good.

I have a question. When did "gourmet" go out of fashion and "foodie" take it's place? Or do "gourmet" and "foodie" mean something different?

Re: Winner, Winner Chicken Dinner!

I read "gourmet" as meaning one who cooks food well -- properly, even -- and "foodie" meaning of a food enthusiast who may or may not cook well, but likes to eat (and probably cooks too, but not necessarily properly). I think the former went out with the general transition of French/France as something we 'Mericans admired to something we openly found pretentious and eventually hateful. Gourmet thrived whern we drove Le Cars and packed out makeup in Le Sportsacs, not while eat Freedom Fries.

Re: Winner, Winner Chicken Dinner!

Gourmet, in my mind anyway, refers to the quality. Shake Shack is a gourmet hamburger. at home, using high quality beef to make a hamburger is gourmet cooking.

foodie simply means 'fan of food'. Just like techies are fans of tech. Some people take it to more extremes obviously, but simply being interested in food and it's preparation is enough. A foodie might drive 100 miles to check out a fancy dish or place that's serving up something interesting, a gourmet would be more likely to drive 100 miles to pick up the freshest lobster they could.

We did that exact New Haven food road trip about four or five years ago. Spent the whole day in New Haven, but went mainly for the eateries you named. Thumbs up on the New haven pizza (Frank Pepe's). Was totally unimpressed by both the Louis Lunch burger and its staff.

I have been known to go out of my way for Pepe's as well. We go a handful of times every recruiting season, including a big trip around the Hartford national college fair. Already have it on the books for April.

Re: Winner, Winner Chicken Dinner!

For those of you in the NYC area who are fans of Pepe's Pizza, there's some good news. You don't have to travel all the way to New Haven. He has opened a branch in Danbury. I'm not a big fan of the way they make pizza up here, but Pepe's is ok because of it's thin, crisp, crust and not too gooey toppings. And, while you are in Danbury, you can go visit the ......., maybe you should go to New Haven.
Oh, there's a branch of another place that has been featured on the cooking shows - Nardelli's Sandwich shop. So, maybe you can make it a food voyage after all.

Re: Winner, Winner Chicken Dinner!

I think when you're promoting destinations that do "lowdown" cuisine like barbecue or nachos, it's not hard to find folks who do it more or less well, and the fun of chasing down places a dude promoted on the food network, well, that and hunger makes for a pretty good sauce.

But of course, somebody who actually manages to f up a down low dish after you went out of your way to get there, that's disappointing.

But the key to being a tourist destination restaurant remains the same --- salt, fat, and carbs. (Same formula for getting tourists to come to your Broadway show, I think.)

Re: Winner, Winner Chicken Dinner!

Don't even have to go as far as Danbury; there's one in Yonkers now. And Fairfield, just off Exit 25 on I-95.

Yonkers?
Connecticut is losing all its traditions to New York. Next thing you know there will be a Stu Leonard's there.
Oh, wait.

I will ALSO go out of my way to go to Stew's. The one thing I miss most about not traveling CT as much as I have in the past few years is the food.

Ah Stew's. Totally awesome memories of childhood shopping trips to the Norwalk store.

If Connecticut foodways traditions are migrating, I expect everyone to start using the term "wedge" in place of "sub," "hero," "hoagie," or "grinder" pronto!

If Connecticut foodways traditions are migrating, I half-suspect Scottish entrees and cream-of-mushroom-based sauces to be the next Thing after that.
